On the Surface of the Sun aka Florida in the Summer.

Let me explain something up front. My knowledge of Necromunda is limited to 2 things:

1. There is an Imperial Guard Regiment from Necromunda, the 8th, called "The Spiders."

2. A long time ago, I bought some Enforcers from the game to use in a Judge Dredd RPG. I haven't seen those models in 25 years.

So please explain the reaction I got today. I was at a shop, and looking at the Necromunda stuff and a guy was talking about a group that plays.

They asked what gang I was looking at getting, and I said I really liked the Spryers.

When I said that they looked at me as if I had said, "Yeah, I like punching small children. Right in the face."

It was not a happy look. And they moved on and started talking about Tyranids in Necromunda.

But I don't understand. They don't have any vehicles or giant creatures. Just some guys in battlesuits like the Van Saar. Is the lack of vehicles bad in Necromunda?

Any advice you can give will be helpful.

"Just some guys in battlesuits" is really underselling it. Comparing them to Van Saar is like saying Tau Crisis Suits and Imperial Guardsmen are the same because they both have armor.

Spryer are a high tier "gang" that break a lot of the action economy and rules of the game and generally seen as OP by some and not a great starting point. You could have said you wanted to play a Space Marine Kill Team in the Underhive and probably gotten a similar reaction. I think they are also generally supposed to be relegated to Hive Secundus campaigns, though not certain of that.

That being said their reaction was terrible and not remotely how any person should approach the situation.

Also I don't believe there were Enforcers 25 years ago and those are Adeptus Arbites models, which were definitely "Judge Dredd aesthetic. Enforcers didn't come along until the Dark Uprising campaign and the subsequent House of Judgement book, which is soon to be replaced.

Oh. I just didn't remember them being called Arbites, I guess I filled in the blanks incorrectly when I read the rulebook.

Also, I didn't realize the Spryers were so overpowering. Why are they included if they are not balanced for the game?

What do you recommend is a good starter group, Van Saar looks pretty cool. Except they seem strangely high tech for the Underhive.

I would love to play as some sort of Mechanicus faction, but the only AdMech guys I have found are a heretek and a Tyranid hybrid.

I often see the Spyrers compared to Batman.
If you want your gang to be made up of upper-class toffs going into the Underhive for a laugh, while kitted out in cyber-enhanced super suits, go for it. The rules are there.
But they appear to be overpowered from the start, expecting to get overtaken as a campaign progresses (if you leave anyone alive to fight against).

There is a reason the teams sent into Hive Secundus are usually a Spyrer with a group of scared assistants to help them.
I am not too sure that GW was thinking when they released Spyrers as a gang, to use to fight against normal gangers.

Originally they were meant to be an arbitrator tool for high-level gangs or campaign ends but you can't sell a fig like that (LOL) so they had rules for being used as a 'normal' campaign option.

Then after 20 years of nostalgia inertia they are back, for better or worse.

Necromunda is not a balanced game. Still they play quite different from everything else which not everyone likes. Still, I wouldn't recommend them to a novice, as it skews what standard gameplay entails.

You answered your own question. Rule of cool is much more important to Necromunda. They have more reliable tech but it isn't OP, and it is also killing them. Long story short they have ccess to an STC machine that allows them to fabricate lasrifles and the like but it is also damaged and their whole territory is irradiated. You can get a good sense of them here.

There really isn't one. The Mechanicum is way to high above to be down here in the Hive.

Thanks for that, I'm going to have plenty to read.

But it looks like Van Saar fits my playing style. Elite Ranged Shooting.
