I see a lot of really good painters of Warhammer stuff on here, and was wondering how many people enter their work into painting competitions like GW's Armies on Parade.

Nevelon is the only soul I've seen on the forum express interest in this year's competition.

When Games Day stopped being in the US, I lost all interest in entering GW's painting competitions.

I never understood why they pulled the plug on GamesDay events.

I entered it once, with my fully converted Traitor Guard army. I even made an extra effort to build a basic display board. I got gold and bronze in two separate categories (don't remember exactly) and all I got for my trouble were two crappy pins.

Honestly it wasn't worth the effort of packing, transporting and unpacking my models.

I’m doing it mostly to help self-motivate my progress and be better about being active in the local community. Odds of me getting anything more then a participation pin are low.

I didn't know there were awards for just participating... hmmm.

Read my story again, there were no awards to speak of even for first place in a category. It may vary between organisers though, so maybe worth checking in advance (mine was GW official store in Warsaw, #&#_9&! cheapskates...).

I was being a tad sarcastic.

Because you got the same award for winning that Nevelon expects to get for just entering.

I thought you were supposed to get something cool for winning.

I have 2 participation pins collecting dust on my shelf, so at least some stores hand them out.

Some events get etched glass trophies. Most just have certificates. Check with your local. It might vary with the manager, no clue.

What do your pins look like? Do they differ from year to year?

I plan on finishing my Warcry and Kill Team Stuff by December..

Just in time for next year.

I have two different ones, so probably? It’s not something I do regularly. Someone who is more in tune with the system might have more clear answers.

I got one of those little Golden Daemon Holding A Brush trophies for coming in second at a store event back in the early 00's.

Does that make you a Golden Daemon painter?

Eh, it was for a painting challenge at a GW affiliated store but not a GW (tm) Store.

But I did make the first cut of the 2002 Baltimore Golden Daemon

I don't have a local GW shop, so have no motivation for doing any kind of Armies on Parade thing. None of the FLGS's around here do painting competitions either.

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/7/24, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~16000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Imperial Knights: ~2300 | Leagues of Votann: ~1300 | Tyranids: ~3400 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000 | Kruleboyz: ~3500 | Lumineth Realm-Lords: ~700
Check out my P&M Blogs: ZergSmasher's P&M Blog | Imperial Knights blog | Board Games blog | Total models painted in 2024: 40 | Total models painted in 2025: 29 | Current main painting project: Tomb Kings
