How do you feel about reading bits of foreign languages in fiction?
1. I like it. There's Google Translate for languages I don't understand
2. I don't like it. It's a nuisance to have to look it up
3. I'm neutral as long as there isn't too much of it

Somewhere in south-central England.

I write most naturally in my native English. However for several reasons I often put snippets of foreign languages into my stories.

It emphasises the presence of foreign characters.
It can create drama or comedy when the characters don't all understand each other.
It's a way to intrigue and amuse the reader. For example, there are bits where you have to have guess at what characters are saying by their actions, or the reaction of other characters who understand them.
I just like how it looks.

I don't worry much if readers can't understand the text. I assume they'll use Google Translate. But maybe I'm wrong. Maybe I should write in English and indicate within the text where it's supposed to be in foreign.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.
