Howdy,

It seems half of my social media feeds are 2nd edition nostalgia bait (I wonder why - it’s almost like the algorithms know me…), and my latest notion is to collect a full roster of the 2nd Ed Space Wolves Codex using original metal bodies BUT with newer plastic arms. For the latter I can probably do eBay for 3rd/4th/5th edition weapons, but honestly I prefer the look of the new Heresy plastic arms! But I’m a little worried that 25+ years of scale creep would render that particular combo into chimpanzee arms :/ I would really appreciate if someone could mock me up a comparison shot.

Also, somewhat related question… is there anywhere that sells 28mm and 32mm round *slottabases? If I’m going later edition arms (and 3D printed shoulder pads!) I don’t need to be precious about 25mm bases that were never sufficient for 90s metal terminators.

Cheers!

The Horus Heresy arms aren't significantly longer than the old plastic arms that were paired with those 2nd edition metal bodies. Less than a mm difference, if that. Most of the size increases of the HH models were in the torso and especially the legs. However the hands on the Heresy marines are considerably smaller than the old-style hands, so your models will look a bit different than they did back in the 90's, less "heroic scaled."

Indeed, the current HH arms are a pertty good fit scale wise, hands are much smaller though. Could even end up looking better than originals

When I originally compared the new HH plastic beakie to the previous FW resin model, I concluded that indeed torso was identically sized on both models. Hands were smaller, legs were more legit looking anatomically (longer legs as well), heads are a touch smaller. HH backoacks are chunkier than old ones, and a tad biggger. You should certainly try how the new HH heads and hands would look on vintage sculpts!

You could also use modern pauldrons methinks

I've got a Primaris arm (doube-finger-pointing one) on an older (4th ed) Captain model and it doesn't look out of place. As the above posters say, the arm lengths haven't changed noticeably.

Thank you so much for your replies! I’ve been looking at Bitz sites and have a few ideas for the plastic accouterments - let me know what you think please:

> Backpacks, thinking mk4 are the closest to the classic 2nd edition look
> Bolters - no exact match, but both mk2 and mk3 have the right vibe. Mk3 even have a couple with proto Aquilas, BUT the vambraces are too chunky, so I’m leaning towards mk2
>Close Combat Weapons - I prefer the Heresy upgrade kit over the pre-Primaris Space Wolves accessories which I’d have to source on eBay anyway, but a sprinkling of the latter on select character models would still look good. I’ll probably be hunting down a few space wolf backpacks anyway for pack leaders.
> for vehicles I reckon I’ll just do the Heresy kits, plus the Space Wolf venerable dread while it’s still available. Don’t suppose you happen to know if the heavy weapons for the vanilla venerable dreadnought are compatible with it?

Thanks again!
