The new White Dwarf (#517) has rules for a new game mode: Cavalry Engagement.

You have 500 points to spend and every unit must have the MOUNTED Keyword.

You can only use the Stratagems and Enhancements from the article, and if your Codex doesn't include a MOUNTED Character, you are not required to take one. You will select a model to be your WARLORD.

When it comes to ENHANCEMENTS you can select any units in your army, they don't need to be characters.

☆☆☆

There are 3 missions listed, but I haven't read them yet...

This actually looks like fun and might encourage me to expand my armies.

What do the enhancements do? And how many points are they?

The most expensive Enhancement is 35 points, and it gives you one reactive move of d6+1 per turn if an enemy finishes a normal, advance or fall back move within 9".

IMHO, the coolest is Ghost Riders at 15 points; it lets you use two strats for free. The first, Rapid Reinforcement can only be used once per game- after a unit is destroyed, add an identical unit (minus characters) to your army in strategic reserve. The second, Withdraw and Replace, allows you to remove a unit that is within 9" of a board edge and not in engagement range and put it in strategic reserve, returning one destroyed non-character model to the unit when you do so.

For 10 points, you can give a unit sticky objectives.

For 15 points, you can give a unit's ranged weapons Ignore Cover.

For 20 points, a charging unit can do D3 mortals on a D6 roll of 2-4 or D3+1 mortals on a 5+.

Also for 20, you can improve the save of a unit with 4+ or worse by 1.

The missions look decent- interesting enough. I haven't played it yet- I don't have mounted or cavalry units ready yet. If I did though, I'd totally try this out.

Hmm. Might actually have to pick up a copy of WD...

Seems weird to create a game mode that so many factions simply can't play in. By my count, that means:

Sisters, Agents, Knights, Death Guard, Emperor's Children, World Eaters*, T'au and Tyranids.

So... yeah. Seems a weird call.

*World Eaters have mounted chaacters, but maxing out on them only gets you to 380 before enhancements.

Wowza that's strong. So every list is going to be 485 points plus this strat.

Ahem, my Kroot beg to differ. We're not technically "T'au" but I've been looking forawrd to trying this out for a while. My best friend plays White Scars and we're going to give it a go as soon as one of us can get a copy of this WD.

That being said, you do raise a valid point. That's why it's a specialist game in a WD magazine and not a mainline release.

You do get underdog bonuses for having less points than other players.

Oh yeah- I have a bunch of Kroot, but I didn't even think of how well suited they are- they even have a mounted Character option that they can use as a Warlord if you wanted to.

I just love the Krootox model sooo much, I might use him anyways. I'd still need a few things to get to 500 points though- I just bought the big limited box, plus some hounds and Farstalkers. But I'd love more Krootox and Rampagers. The character is cool too, but he's a totally new to 10th guy and a lone operative, so I was on the fence... But using him in this minigame makes me want one!

Ironic, you can't take any of the two "Knight"-factions in a game about cavalry...

I tried to stay away from Legends.

I also considered Daemons as their own thing. There aren't any mounted Death Guard.

Totally forgot about them. My bad.

The Lone Spear is a really cool model, and it's such a linchpin to the army, it really brings the Kroot together. It's a lot of fun to paint up, and it really ties the Kroot army together.

Somewhere in Canada

Three units of three Rampagers- 255
Three Krootox - 120 (3 units of 1)
Lone Spear- 80 points

Total: 455

Ghost Riders on one Rampager Unit- 15
Raider's Penant on another Rampager Unit- 10
Grenade Dischargers on the final Rampager unit- 20

Total 500 on the nose.

I'm not sure about fielding the Krootox as individuals- more survivability as a group, but my idea is that as individuals, one can provide support for each Rampager unit.

And those guys are rockstars- one unit stickies objectives, one can return from the dead once and redeploy and replace whenever it's near a table edge and the third will absolutely delete enemies they charge with mortals.

This is all just theory hammer- I'd need to buy 2 units of Rampagers, 2 Krootox and a Lone Spear to pull it off; that's $340 CAD...

I could afford to buy one unit per month... So by May, I could field it... And then 11th drops in July. And there's SOOO much other stuff that I want to finish off other collections that I don't see it happening.
