Hey mate,
That's a great looking board.
If I were looking for something quick and easy (which I always am), I'd spray everything black and sponge it brown (or just spray brown if I could find the right colour for cheap - like Rustoleum at the hardware store).
This'll be your base for both the desert and industrial tiles.
Industrial tiles get a further sponge of gunmetal, a black wash, and a drybrush of silver. Maybe some extra streaks or spots of brown/orange wash for more rust.
Sand tiles then get drybrushed various shades of red/brown/ochre. Varied, natural shades are your friend here - not every tile needs to be the exact same colour. Again, thinned paints/washes can be used to tie things together. You could pick out some of the bigger rocks in a lighter or darker colour, but in my experience they tend to be a similar shade to the dirt around them in real life - see pics of Uluru for an example. Some straw/dead grass tufts would go really well too I think if you feel like splurging.
It's a really interesting board. Looking forward to seeing progress!
