It’s here!
The latest addition to the Commander Series family of rules, Future War Commander 2 is now available for pre-order! For those unfamiliar with the first edition, Future War Commander 2 is a set of miniature wargame rules allowing you to play combined-arms games to represent futuristic and science fiction based battles. Each player takes charge of a Battlegroup, which could be anything from a platoon right up to a division. The rules attempt to anticipate the warfare of the future to provide a game that is playable, easy to use and fast to play, based on sound military principles that have been projected into a believable future. Games can be played solo, one-on-one or with multiple players.
You can use any scale of miniatures to play the game, from 2mm right up to 28mm. Your miniatures can be based or unbased as this makes no difference when playing the game. One stand of figures represents an infantry squad and one model represents one item in real-life, whether that be an armoured fighting vehicle, a dropship or a Massive walker. Alternatively, one stand of miniatures can represent a platoon when playing at a higher level of command.
So whether you want to fight it out in a galaxy far, far away, or take control of the vital compounds on a desert planet, Future War Commander contains everything you need. The book also includes 17 scenarios for you to try, as well as two example army lists.
Full support will be available through our Forum, with further lists for all of our ranges, Optional Rules, a QRS and more, all as free downloads. A PDF version of the rules will available on Wargame Vault on release day too.
Head over and pre-order your copy now, ready to ship out on Friday 30th January!

FWC was the first indie game I bought, I think.
Turned out to be an Ancients game with tanks tacked on, with lasers tacked on to that. And the "combined arms" turned out to be a random chart of non-interactive off-table support. Is that still the case?

That's an interesting take, I've not heard it described like that before! The Commander rulesets were inspired by the Warmaster engine originally, but that's going back 20 years now. Since then they've evolved a lot, with the WWII and Cold Wars rulesets taking on those tweaks and refining them further. This new rulebook takes all of the updates that have been implemented in BKC and CWC, along with 15 years of feedback from the Future War players, and puts it all into a new version of Future War.

OK. I'm curious.
Can you tell us a little more about the system - perhaps point out a play example of prior edition review?

Well interesting. It was previously the 'worse' warmaster conversion. Not to say it was bad, but CWC and Blitzkrieg worked better. I think its the Sci Fi aspects which didn't gel as well with the rest. Won't pre-order but will wait to see what changes are made to see if I get a copy.

Nice to see this get a reboot. We dabbled in it a decade and a half ago. It wasn't quite our cup-of-tea, but it was cool to see how a proper command and control mechanic works. If I were looking for a new small-scale mass battle game I'd definitely give this a try.
Good luck to Pendraken on the rerelease!
I'm somewhat interested in the 10mm sci-fi stuff though. I'll give them a look as the lines look more comprehensive than I remember.

There's a fairly recent review here: https://amsterdamwar.game.blog/2021/03/27/guide-future-war-commander-wargame-with-dropzone-commander-miniatures/ using Dropzone miniatures instead. We'll be making some playthrough videos over the coming months as well, on our YouTube channel.
