Land of Confusion

I was trying to honestly figure out the cheapest possible army to buy, build and paint.

And I kept coming back to the Custodes, especially with the new models coming out (I'm assuming they will be cheaper than their Forgeworld resin versions).

Dollar for point, the seem to have the best value in the game.

But does anyone have an idea if it's a good idea to buy any of the current line of models, or wait for the new ones to be released?

Custodes are an elite army so yep they'll often be one of the cheapest because they have high point values so you don't need many to hit a full army.

As for prices its hard to say - some plastic kits can be as expensive as FW; some can be cheaper.

The other thing to keep in mind is that whilst GW's plastic casting is really good, its still got limits. Resin will typically still have micro details and undercut details that are superior to plastics.
However we are well into an era where I think its more a case of freedom of choice on the buyer rather than an outright "will be 100% better" aspect.

So I'd compare the fine details of the models on the store to the ones that GW have previewed and its down to your own choice if you want to get some in resin now or if you're happy to wait for the plastics.

Custodes can be pretty cheap pts per $.

Even more so if your not opposed to buying used.
Ex: 2 years ago (?) - right as the 10e Codex was coming out - I built 1k pts for $120.
Now the 2nd 1k pts, that was more expensive as I wanted some of the FW stuff (and couldn't find it much cheaper)
