I’m kind of new to Warhammer 40k. I started at the beginning of last year, but I don’t have much time to play, so I’m not very good yet. I’ve been looking at the new Armageddon box set for the upcoming 11th Edition (releasing in June this year) and I’m wondering whether I should get it. What are people’s opinions on it?

The Marine Standing Behind Marneus Calgar
|
Welcome to 40k and Dakka.
The edition launch boxes tend to be a very good deal on what you get, but the total price is rather high. But like any of the boxes GW puts out, the less you want of it, the lower the overall value. If you are willing to sell part of it on ebay, split a box with someone, or just source the bits you want, that can help a lot. While the launch box is probably going to be the best deal of all the starters, they will probably release a number of smaller starter sets shortly after. Fewer minis, less percent savings, but lower entry price.
Personally I’m looking forward to it. As a marine player I want most of the stuff on that side of the box. And the orcs can be a fun painting project, but might take a while to get around to.

Ultimately if you like the models its probably worth getting, if you don't it isn't.
The Marines do nothing for me - but I didn't expect them too. The Orks were better than I expected and vaguely tempting to get them as a result. But not sure I want to play Orks in 11th.

The "starter boxes" that come out after launch have most of the models from the launch box and are always very good value too, if you want to play one of the two factions of course.

Should you get it?
That question depends upon your answers to the following questions:
1) can you afford it?
2) do you play either of the factions in the box?
3) if you do, do you want the units presented?
4) if you dont play either/both factions , are you interested in starting them? With these units?
5) do you want those units NOW?
6) (very important) do you LIKE the actual models in the box?
Deal or no deal, whatever your budget, the simple truth is this is expensive. Dont spend $ on models you dont like.
---------------
On my end:
● i can afford it
● i do play both factions
● i like all of the models well enough
* I honestly have no use for the Marine 1/2.
● i can make use of the Ork half
* I dont really need any of the models immediately
●● What i do need ASAP is the rules content.
So ive got the box ordered at the local shop & will trade off the Marine half.

If you're a beginner and don't already have large collection and like the armies in the box, you probably should get it. It is a a very nice box and you get the rules and cards. The main issue is that it has stuff like Intercessors and Ork boys that most veterans already have more than enough of, but for a new player getting new and shiny version of those essential core units is exactly what is needed.

Points of value in the new set:
Marines
The big draw here for a new player is probably the characters alone. A captain and librarian are just good things to have in your collection and are always cheaper when picked up in a starter. The jump chaplain is likely to see return to prominence and jump troops have been popular in a lot of builds.
In terms of infantry, there's a million ways to get 5 Intercessors but the bodies are always useful. Slap extra weapons on them from other kits and you can round out a lot of units quite easily. Vanguard Vets tend to thrive in certain chapters but have a place. The vehicle might be on the weaker side, but if it provides utility like its big cousin it might easily find a place.
Orks
Definitely the easier sell of the two. Boyz and Gretchin are something few people have too much of and are core to the army. Great set of new and long hard to acquire characters and two impressive looking vehicles. I don't really see a downside here.

Pretty much this. The ork side looks great, but I already have 8 warbosses, 3 weird boyz, hundreds of boyz and more gretchin than I'm allowed to field legally, so it's not worth paying that much money. I I buy a pair of mek walkers and the two boss nobs separately off ebay, I might get less of a discount, but I will be spending less in total.

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks actually do not think that purple makes them harder to see. The joke was made canon by Alex Stewart's Caphias Cain books.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.
Orks do not have the power of believe. |

Orks great models. a few models that can even be needed by an existing orc player.
Marine part of the box, is only good for someone who has no marines. I do like the speeder. The rest is either already there (shield cpt, another librarian, chaplain, intercessors) or downgrade to already existing models, making it hard to be exited about them ( the BA curse that hit SangGuard and DC, hit the venguard vets).
Rules wise, I do not know much about orcs , but boys are generaly used through out an edition and I would hope the mek gun is good too. For marines maybe the venguard marines are going to be good, it is suppose to be the "melee" edition

What is this heresy suggesting that some people have "enough" boyz?
I like the models, so if I can find a big enough discount I'm in.
