Desperately killing time here at work before  a nice holiday and noticed a thread in YMTC wherein one person asked  a rather basic question, another responded and then they blew up at each other-fortunately closed by Yakface. Re-read the thread and it occurred to me that the response that started the quick spiral downward could have been read in several ways.

As this is supposed to be a discussion forum  can we wind back the hostility level a bit, and what seems to be an increasing desire to imemdiately jump on other posters?  Further, there are members here who don't use English as a first language and their writing style or grammer may be misperceived.

Sorry just my own rant while waiting for the margaritas to start flowing.

well, as was pointed out in the thread, the person doing the asking seems to do little to no research before asking questions and then forming opinions. It is a bit annoying. And the responses were actually civil but harshly critical.

I certainly don't see a problem with it.

I must disagree.  I think the thread kind of went downhill once 'shovelin it' was mentioned a few posts in.

I think that this thread has some personal history to it as well; there are some problems with personal animosity (which is one reason I've been awfully quiet in YMDC lately, to simmer down a bit) which tend to be inflamed at the smallest provocation.

-=Edit=- That's actually an impressive amount of digging that Snooggums did to find those threads.

Certain individuals take offense easily. They're the ones who need to back off.

As a rule of thumb, the designers do not hide "easter eggs" in the rules. If clever reading is required to unlock some sort of hidden option, then it is most likely the result of wishful thinking.

Took 5 minutes actually, I just browsed the first 5 pages of threads that were started by mr happypants, I did not dig for everything he made a comment on at all.

Honestly it was an overreaction on my part and I admit that. It was the second time that happypants had thrown an insult without merit, plus I was steamed about the comment in the level 3 thread where I was insulted before I even posted in the thread. There is a hostility to the minority opinion that is thrown around by the followers, the equivilant of the small guy on the playground who tosses insults then hides behind his big friend. happy just did too many too recently to not be an easy target.

I was out of line and I'll give myself a warning. I definately let some random person on the internet get under my skin too much. I'll do my best to restrain myself to realizing personal attacks have nothing to do with a rule being correct or not in the future.

I don't think your reaction was harsh at all Snoogy! Although you are very proficient at search-fu it seems.

Its definetely no secret that Happypants starts alot of basic question threads.

Along with civility... let's not forget to maybe brush up on the Forum Rules.

#1 says it right there. Re-read what is written. A person might not be saying what you think they're saying. Re-read it calmly and THEN post.

Fair enough, I guess I ought to eat a bit of sh!t and say sorry to Snooggums, who is probably right more often than I am and whose rules I personally follow more than the strictest of RAW.

Re-reading your reply I can see that it is very possible that it was not a personal stab.

As for asking 'basic' questions, I use YMDC as a sounding board for things that don't make a ton of sense (to me) in the rules. Or to ask questions about armies that I have little/no familiarity with.

So Snoogs, you got out of me what a handful of people on this planet ever have, an apology.

Nothing wrong with basic questions. I will ask them as well on itmes I don't understand, may have a misperception of, or don't have the codex understanding of if its not one of my own lists.

I've also found what I thought to be basic questions turn into long open ended disputes so you never know

I think that Dakka could be much more civil as long as everyone finds something else to do in their spare time (you know when they aren't answering YMDC posts) other than sharpening their fangs.

Can you D.I.G. it?

I just wanted to say that I like Dakka because it seems to be more civilized than other forums. at least better than the german Wargate were I posted before. and there was this weird threat about rules layering which at one point, wqas called the OT Zone Thread...if this was OT Zone stuff, them I'm even more happy to be on Dakka

Indeed. As Fr.Wilson once told me:

"Blessed are those who think before they talk, and pray before they think."

Its a bit religious, but the quote does have some bearing here. Think with your heart before you think with your head. If you think your being an ass, you are. Be prepared to suffer the consequences.
