I figured this might be a fun thread. Recently I was away on buisness where I was stuck playing "support" for long hours waiting for equipment to fail or problems to pop up. As such I spent a good deal of time checking out codex's and coming up with forces I'd make if I played say Guard or Tau or Necrons, etc. Going off that, assuming you have access to the codex for the army post up what kind of force you'd made if you played an army you don't currently own. Figure that people who DO play the army you post could give insight as to how effective your list might be. May even be worthwhile to post what armies you play to give a feel for what you like/disklike/fear from other armies. I'll post up some of the lists I made later, they're all scribbled down on paper since I didn't have a PC with me when I had to do those long support hours.

My current armies are Orks (KoS, Codex, and Deathskull), and Marines. Lets start with 1500 of Tau:

My current army is Kroot Mercenaries. I have been considering an army that is A) a low model count (the reverse of Kroot) and B) adept at morale (I can't stand seeing a unit of over ten models run off the board or get chased down in combat). Due to this, I have played with the idea of a Saim-Hann variant list high in vypers, because vehicles can't fail morale checks! I don't have the points down, but would want an army like this: HQ- Wildrider Chieftain w/ fully decked out retinue Troops- 2 Vypers with starcannons Troops- 2 Vypers with starcannons Troops- 2 Vypers with bright lances Troops- 2 Vypers with bright lances Troops- 2 Vypers with scatter lasers Troops- 2 Vypers with scatter lasers Fast Attack- Nuadhu Fireheart Heavy Support- Falcon w/ scatter laser and all the necessary upgrades I figured the list would afford me the mobility and low model count that I so crave, plus the idea of filling out any infantry void with the Kroot that I already have painted is appealing to me. - Oaka

since I started working on my Necromunda Gang, I keep thinking, it would be cool to have a whole Adeptus Mechanicus army based on Guard. Doptrines would be: -Engineseers (of course) -Ogryns -special Weapon Teams -Bionics for fluff reasons -maybe grenadiers, maybe plate armor
-as the "real" HQ I would take an allied Inquisitor, since he can have so many nice followers and gimmicks, and I can't take an allied Techmarine as HQ. -maybe powerlifter sentinels -Skitarri (Stormtroopers) -heavy Servitors (Ogryns) - dunno what Tanks I could use

Very strong, immortals can take more punishment than terminators and cost less! that is the power of this list, scarabs tie up units fast and the big unit can take out tanks (even skimmers with 40 attacks on the charge) Lord and lith keep things out of CC, can be used to set up traps for fast assualting enemies.

Death Korps/Greatcoats IG cause i like the look and am planning on starting a second troop.Oh and i finally have plasticard so i can truly make each model unique. Cant remember much of IG codex but at least: 2 Hounds 1-2 Russ bolter spons and flamer hull as much chimeras as my troops can fit it MANY big guns. Some doctrines that will give me more conversion possibilities

HQ: 1) Tooled up HQ Commander (Bike and Power Fist)
Elite: 1) Terminator Squad (Teleport thingy) 2) Dreadnought (Plasma Cannon and whatever else is legal)
Troops: 1) Tactical Squad (Missile Launcher + Grenade Launcher) 2) Tactical Squad (Missile Launcher + Flamer) 3) Scout Squad (Missile Launcher + Sniper Rifle +Teleport Homer)
Fast Attack: 1) Land Speeder (Assault Cannon + Heavy Bolter)
Heavy Support: 1) Predator (Lascannons) 2) Predator (Lascannons)
Roughly at first glance two questions, how effective would this be and how many points would this army be?

Thanks for the compliment. As to the marines, there are a few pieces of advice. Generally people leer away from giving HQ characters Power Fists/Hammers, the biggest advantage of the SM HQ is the Initative, don't waste it by giving them something that lets your enemey get a chance to kill you first because it can happen. Terminators - How many and what weapons? I'm guessing 5 and 2 Assault Cannons as that's the standard load out. Normal SM Dreads can't have Plasma Cannons. Tactical Squads - the varience here is how many marines per squad and what weapons. Also note that Marines can't take grenade launchers. Generally people prefer Lascannons in tactical squads over Missile Launchers because of the extra strength vs tanks and the extra AP vs heavier infantry. You don't want all your AP2 weapons on two relatively fragile tanks. Not a bad start to the SM world, but as time goes on you'll learn from experience what works and what doesn't. It's fun to start with though.

Just for the hell of it Mech guard Command Platton with Heroic senior officer, Master Vox, Medic and Standard+Sanctioned psker with crazy massive stat increases wargear itme, master crafted force weapon Chimera with multi laser heavy bolter Then six infantry plattons of six squads with generic upgrades all round thats something like 36 chimeras all the same as the command platoon chimera.
then 3 sentinals with lascannons/auto cannons 2 hellhounds Leman Russ with heavy bolter sponsons and lascannon Leman russ demolisher with Plasma cannon sponsons and Lascannon Basilisk with inderect fire. This would be quite expensive maybe some stormtroopers in chimeras so 40 chimersa with the storm troopers added 2 hellhounds 2 leman russ varients and bassilisk (spelling=bad) makes 45 tanks that would scare any opponent

I currently do nids with some chaos and orks on the side. If I satrted another army (and I am considering) I would do a pure grey knights army. Throw in 1 or 2 raiders 2 squads or termies, the rest grey knights with a few special weapons upgrades. I would do it simply for the challenge of trying to win with an army nobody in my area can get to work.

i currently have 4 armies so i doubt i will actually build anymore, but i have sat down with a dex and made lists for several armies i have: 3,000+ points of deathwing(easy to do) 1,850 of tau 1,850 of ravenwing 1,850 standard dark angels 1,850 armies i would do if i had no money limits: .IG -steel legion armoured fist painted like WWII panzer grenadiers with 3 hell hounds and auto cannon turrents on all chimeras. .black templar-30 assault termi army .salamander-drop pod army with 3 inferno cannon/CCW/heavy flamer dreads, 3 man unit of land speeder tornado flamer/melta config, and max number of 10 man podding squads with heavy flamers and melta guns with remaining points. .eldar- tank company with 6 wave serpents-lance/shuriken cannon/spirit stone min guardian squad, 3 falcons with star cannon/shiruken cannon/pulse laser, spirit stone/holo field and a farseer .necron-2 monoliths, 2 lords on destroyer bodies with war scythes/falactery/orb, 2X 10 man warrior squads, 3X 4 man destroyer squads .nids-40 CC warrior army, 3 raveners, 3 zoanthropes, 2X 3 unit ripper squads now i just try to pawn these ideas off on other people

I always wanted to make my own biker SM chapter, nothing but bikes. the army would not be the most competitive, but it sure would be fun to play and look cool.
Other than that, deffinately the 6 dread SM list, my friend did it and just converted the crud out of each dread and the army looks flat out awesome. He made some really killer anc creative conversions and i would like to shamelessly copy that army =)
an adeptus mechanicus army, just for cool conversions, and a fun theme.
Feral orcs, I LVOE SQUIGOTHS!!!!
and a million more. The game has so many killer options.
