How challenging is the process of converting the plastic Space Marine terms to Chaos Terms? More specifically, how hard is it to scrape off all of those Imperial logos without trashing the model? I'm considering picking up a set to convert into some sort of Nurgle/Tzeentch terms, but I'm just afraid it will be a nightmare to carve away all the Imperial markings.

It's virtually impossible. The new Termies have some sort of ultra-hard molecular coating (allegedly to help the paint stick better, but we know that there must be a more sinister reason). I've heard that some people have had success with a modelling scalpel, but I find this unbelievable.

A simple modeling file and a brand new razor blade work just fine. I've been converting my termies into GK termies and have had no trouble taking off the imperial symbols with precision.

Use the file to remove the bulk. Then clean up with the razor. Sometimes I use the razor to remove detail work like the little chest skulls before I file the wings off.

A local player has made the Imp-to-Chaos modification, and hasn't seemed to have had that much trouble.

As a rule of thumb, the designers do not hide "easter eggs" in the rules. If clever reading is required to unlock some sort of hidden option, then it is most likely the result of wishful thinking.

But there's no sense crying over every mistake;

Ultra hard to convert/cut/file?

Jomi where have you heard that?

They file down and cut with no problem at all. I've always found that using a modelling knife or scapel is best for shaving off the imperial emblems. When i converted one to be a techmarine in terminator armour I removed the aquilla's and various bits before i green stuffed cult mechanicus badges. I found it fine with decent effect arfter wards.

Converting these to chaos is very easy and I've known many people to do them up as Khornate, Slaneshi, and nurgle chosen.

Good luck and have fun with your conversion!

with a sharp hobby knife and some diffenent grits of sand light grit paper it's very easy I made a whole marine army out of a mix of chaos and imperial marines. it took a bit of work but the outcome was great.
