1. Does the Eldar Swooping Hawk Exarch Sustained Attack power opperate only as stated in the GW Eldar FAQ?  Where it only gives him the ability in Hand to Hand to affect models that his unit would affect.  If his unit can hurt them then so can he, effectively extending his "kill zone" range beyond the base-to-base and 2 inch rule.

2.Or is the Sustained attack power a combination of the Eldar codex and the GW Eldar FAQ?  Where you would have the extended "kill zone" and in hand to hand you roll to hit, keep rolling to hit till you miss and all those hits go into the enemy unit (very nasty when combined with Web of Skulls=powerweapon and a hot dicehand, I think he had 11 hits on a SM tac squad last nite).

Or is it something completely different?
Thx for any help on this.

An Exarch fights as part of his unit. If he is in base contact with an enemy model or within 2" of a friendly model in his unit that it, he gets to strike.

Roll to hit and follow the Sustained Attack rules until you determine how many hits and wounds the Exarch has scored. The enemy now makes saving throws and removes casualties.

Casualties can be removed from any model in base contact with the Swooping Hawk unit or within 2" of a friendly model in base contact.

In short, yes the Exarch can kill a whole lot of models if he rolls really well. . .the new codex is in October/November.

yakface's 40K rule #1: Although the rules allow you to use modeling to your advantage, how badly do you need to win your toy soldier games?

Squad leaders share the same killzone with their entire squad. Any enemy model that is within 2" of a friend that's in base to base with your hawks should be vulnerable to the sustained assault, provided that the exarch is within 2" of one of his friends in base to base of course.

That said, sustained assault is utter cheese and swooping hawks are nothing more than a crappy meatshield designed to deliver an overpowered exrach. I hope they nerf the living hell out of this power in the new eldar book

I too hope that they nerf everything that kills Marines in the new Dex. That way, not even Eldar will be able to beat MEQs, and then tournaments will really be MEQ v. MEQ with MEQs always winning and no one to stand in their way.

Yes, Eldar always have been too effective. They must have been crappy in 2nd Ed. That must be why GW made them so good for 3rd. Well, they'll get their comeuppins.

I [heart] Marines.

"The last known instance of common sense happened at a GT. A player tried to use the 'common sense' argument vs. Mauleed to justify his turbo-boosted bikes getting a saving throw vs. Psycannons. The player's resulting psychic death scream erased common sense from the minds of 40k players everywhere. " - Ozymandias

They got nerfed when going from their entry in the BBB to their own codex... sigh... everything had plasma cannons in the BBB. Or was that the other way around? Anyhow swooping hawk exarchs are cool. They do an awesome job against anything t3, and an ok one vs marines. Yes they kinda wipe out those cheeseball 5 man tact squads, but then by feilding a 5 man squad you deserve it??!?! Field 10man squads and you'll find that the swooping hawk exarchs don't really do a whole lot.
