Sounds like loka re-skined.

Looks pretty though.

Your last point is especially laughable and comical, because not only the 7th ed Valkyrie shown dumber things (like being able to throw the troopers without parachutes out of its hatches, no harm done) - Irbis

I don't know, I'm pretty excited. I love chess and 40k, so it works perfectly. Been a few years since I've played a game of chess though.

That campaign intro already sounds like a more interesting narrative than most 40k games (or that Ultramarines movie...). I somehow feel like this developer's talents are sorely wasted on a simple game of 40k chess.

Give these guys a bag of money and let them make a 40k RPG or something!

Yay wilful misinformation in N&R threads!

The game features loads of mechanics beyond what you'd find in chess, so all the hilarity here is misplaced. Watch a trailer, educate yourselves.

That's nice, what does it bring to the table that we couldn't do with our existing miniatures, dice, and a checkerboard?

Dawn of War brought the game into real time and it was a different perspective on the game. Unless there is a radical element that we aren't being shown, this is just Chess with some special rules.

Who's betting there will be a special edition box for the board game that will sell out in under an hour because GW didn't produce enough?

GW licences Computer games but doesn't make them.

GW have made their money on this, any special editions will be down to the developer.

Not really interested in debating the merits of a game I haven't played yet, just wanted to combat the falsehood that it's pure chess and that therefore campaign mode etc is laughable

This thread would probably benefit if the OP title was changed to say 40K Regicide, instead of Chess.

I clicked on a banner ad from this page and looked at the Regicide trailer. Is it like animated chess with some other mechanics added? I'm not sure I understand it. What is it?

Edit: From what I can tell it seems to be a combination of chess and 40k. A demo should be interesting. I like the multi-player capability.

Pretty much. Just finished playing a game, and it's fun so far. There's "Classic Mode" which is...well...classic chess, and then there's Regicide which still plays like chess in terms of movement and capturing, but units can use your initiative points, which are given every turn, to make other actions, such as shooting or pinning down an enemy in order to keep them from using their own abilities. Even kings can die if you shoot them enough. Shooting is something every unit can do, but each one has their own special abilities. The captain can call in an airstrike, librarians can life steal , tactical marines get grenades, etc. There are also player abilities that you can use on any unit, mostly consisting of buffs and debuffs. The campaign isn't out yet, but the extremely short tutorial for Regicide mode had things like barricades on the map and various troops placed here and there instead of the normal 2 row army, so I'm assuming that the campaign missions will have different scenarios with different units for each one. There's an exp system too for each unit type (Rook/Terminator, Bishop/Devastator, etc get their own exp bars) but I don't know what those do yet as we're locked out of the Armory still.

The only minor criticism I have so far is that the animations for the kills seem to be a bit relaxed, the characters don't seem overly enthusiastic about smiting their bitter foe. The animations themselves are good though. The Storm Boyz thrust with his knife, for example, seems to be a poke more than a stab. If the speed was increased maybe slightly it might look more vicous. Same thing with the thrown grenades.

Loving the look of it so far though and the audio of the orks is perfect.

The animations in general seem kinda weak, and a bit wonky at times (Terminators shoot more into the ground then they actually do at the enemy when making Snap Shots), but I hear that the devs are listening to the reports and suggestions so I guess we should expect improvements in time. It is Early Release after all.

YO DAKKA DAKKA!

You may find it amusing to know that I'm the Thomas / Arc who wrote the video release article above that Orlando pasted in. I've been absent from Dakka for a good few years now, but popped back about a year ago when we announced this title.

I cannot tell you how exhaustedly proud I am that it's finally out, and that people appreciate the fairly hardcore, abstract strategy direction we've taken. I also directed all of the voice actors in the game - probably the most fun thing I've ever gotten to do creatively!

Yes, we've made a niche strategy game that combines chess and Warhammer 40,000. It's probably not something anyone expected or asked for, but for those who remember me from ages ago when I was a daily regular here - kitbashing is kind of my thing.

And yes, it's in Early Access. Non-voice audio is all first-pass, so there's plenty of improvement to come there. A few FX sequences need to be fixed up such as the Assault Cannon bug jayko mentioned.

Regarding the story, we worked with Ross Watson on that one. HBMC has worked with Ross in the past, too, and he's a brilliant bloke. We're doing something a little more psychological and head-screwing in this story - a dark story set upon a bleak, vanquished world - to match the 'thinking' game that it is.

We're a few months from full release but as mentioned, Early Access has been available since Monday, and the reception has been amazing.
