Just curious how often they re-do minis and the like for the game. Painting
is making me tired and sometimes I just want to buy something and play.
This stuff just sorta intrigues me (I have a tremendous backlog of minis to
paint).

How is the game?

The Star Wars WOTC prepackaged minis game is pretty fun, sets up and plays quick. I haven't played since the Rebel Storm set was released, but you could get all the models you wanted on Ebay relatively cheaply.

Has anyone seen the ruleset for Wargods of Egyptus? Some of the models were sculpted by Chris Fitzpatrick, and are pretty good quality, but I've never seen the rules before.

Most Wargods games I've seen are a bit smaller than WFB.  Rules seem pretty good, and even the non-Fitz figs are great.  I would say fig wise they are in the upper eschelon of sculpt and manufacture quality.

Malfred, I also like Star Wars minis as a pick up game.  Fairly quick, plenty of variety with the special rules, and relativly easy.  Many shops have commons and uncommons for cheap and a bulk buy on ebay would also net you a bunch of figs for cheap.

I've seen the Reaper Exarch with both weapon options and both look like things you can buy in sex shops. A weapon should not look like this, not even a Emperor's Children weapon. -Symbio Joe

well i do play classic pencil and paper DnD and we do use minitures from time to time especially for battles and such to show where everybody is and what not

personally i have 4 minis i use and my wife has 1

i use a WHF dwarf lord when i play dwarfs, a  black templar painted emperors champion when i do paledinish characters, i also have a drow and a ranger character and my wife uses a witch all of the later being minitures from the reaper line that i find fit DnD characters amazingly well.

If you want to paint figs for it, I'd recommend Warlord. Fewer figs, relatively cheaper, easy rules.

If you don't POTSM is pretty fun.

Guinness: for those who are men of the cloth and football fans, but not necessarily in that order.

I think the lesson here is the best way to enjoy GW's games is to not use any of their rules.--Crimson Devil

Has anyone tried the Axis & Allies miniatures game? They're prepainted.

I picked up one starter and one booster, but ended up with boatloads of Allied Infantry + one tank, and about 9 Axis tanks with ~3 infantry. Haven't played yet, as neither of those make particularly playable lists and I don't know anyone else who has any.

Wondering if anyone has experience with the game...?

You can buy PotSM at Target. You can also buy a Captain Jack Sparrow roleplay set (headband, cutlass, etc) at Target.

I have Supersystem on order, a generic superhero mini game. And since comic books include so many genres you can use just about anything with it.

The rules sound good and they've gotten execellent review. There's even a few trial set online.

I've played the DnD minis game. It's fun, quick, and makes a good pick-up game. Some of the minis are really nice and some are so-so. The only real problem I've found with the game is the point cost of some minis. With so many in the game it's hard to balance the costs. There are some miniatures that are 3-4 times better than others at the same point cost. Some of them are just too cheap for what they can do. However with the number of figs and the relatively short play time, the balance isn't a big deal.

PS...if you are a collector or a person who must have every mini in the set, be warned that some of the early sets are out of print. A lot of the more desireable rares are expensive and booster packs from the original release and first few expansions are expensive if you can find them. You can get plenty of cool/powerful rares in the new sets so their isn't a need to have figs from the older sets.

Nah, I'm not a collector. That's crazy stuff that I don't want to get into.

The Icon pieces look nice though.

Pirates of the spanish main is great. (plug plug, paid by the post I hear...lol)

DnD minis, I am not sure about, as I got out of it after wizards dropped chainmail.

Axis and allies minis game is great for entry level historical wargaming, or just wargaming with quick rules that still use a fair amount of tactics to play.

I just got the gargantuan Black Dragon figure for D&D and it is amazing! The detail is great and the pose is perfect. Now I can't wait for the big red baddy.

I use the mini's for the D&D campaign that I DM. Last campaign had the party fighting dragons and I bought the McFarlane/Leifield (?) ones to represent the really big dragons that the party eventually faced. This new D@D black dragon is SO much better, I want to redo the old advntures just to use this bad boy.

That's awesome.

I actually played my first game last night. it was a mess, tactically
as we didn't know the rules and whatnot. I prefer warmachine, but
my brother liked DnD for fastplay.

I guess next up will be Pirates or something.

You'll have lots of fun with pirates. It's a simple game and it's cute when you roll all the little dice.

Under the couch

Yeah, we've been having a lot of fun with pirates, although along the way we've been modifying the rules a little to suit ourselves. We found that for larger games or 3-way games, a split activation works better than the normal turn structure.

If anyone's interested, our house rules so far can be found here: http://www.underthecouch.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=25
