Ok I am confused, why would I want to run a Chaplain with a squad of Space Marines?

I have seen the Librarian with these Assualt troops, but I am un sure why a chaplin?

Two reasons. First of all, the chaplain makes any unit he joins fearless. Second, and most importantly,"'Litanies of hate."

If you are smart in game play, you should be able to direct your assault marines against an enemy so that you get to make the charge. Base Attacks + Two Close combat Weapons + Charge, and the ability to re-roll should give you a pretty good amount of assault oomph.

Well, as has been said, 2 reasons.
1. Makes the squad fearless, and as assault marines fall back 3d6, a fall back could be a critcial error in any plan.
2. Litanies of hate allows the chaplain and any squad he is with to re-roll any failed to hit rolls in close combat.

A note on Litanies of Hate (something that people forget quite often in my experience) it is only effective on the turn they charge and only if they charge.

Drano doesn't exactly scream "toy" to me.

Assault squad:
1 attack base, +1 for two weapons, +1 for charge = 3 attacks each.

10 man assault squad on the charge = 30 attacks

Vs. ws 4 opponent (a resasonable assumption in most cases I believe)
30 attacks = 15 hits

30 attacks with litanies of hate = 22.5 hits (round up, 23)

So in addition to any attakcks and kills and what not that the chaplin himself will do with his power weapon, he gives you an additional 8 hits for your squad and makes them fearless. Sounds like a no-brainer to me.
