The whole point of the special weapon squad is the demo charge. Otherwise a platoon command sqaud can do anything they can do, better. Two meltas or two flamers and a demo charge in a special weapon squad is a whole lot of fun. Otherwise don't waste your time. Also do not even think about giving these guys a melta bomb. About the only place in a guard army where it is even a semi good idea is on a rough rider vet, and even that is debatable.

Triple meltas go well in Hardened Vet squads to. BS4 melta >> BS3 melta.

4 BS3 meltas > 3 BS4 meltas.

Actually 4xBS3 Meltas = 3xBS4 Meltas for effectiveness. You'll average 2 hits with either configuration.

I suppose it's possible to get 4 hits with the 4xBS3 configuration, whereas the max with vets is 3. But you can throw a BS4 plasma pistol on the Vet Sgt., which is better than a BS3 plaspistol on the JO....

All right, it's close, I'll give ya that!

With the command squad, you don't have to pay for BS4 lasguns though.
On the other hand, the vets can infiltrate or deep strike.
With the right doctrines, so can the command squad.

Really depends.

Let me put it this way: my ideal drop troop force would include

3 dropping 5-man Vet squads, 2 with 3x Meltaguns and 1 with 3x PG. Possibly Plaspistols on the Sgts.
2 dropping Special Weapons squads with a Demo charge and either 2x MG or 2x Flamers
2 dropping Platoon Command squads with 4x Flamers

My point is that I'd much rather give the Meltas to the BS4 troopers, and leave the BS3 guys to point flamers that don't need a to-hit roll...

Strangelooper figured out 4BS3 is better than 3BS4.

Not to mention, that the chances of getting no hits with 4 BS3 is lower than the chances of getting no hits with 3BS4.

4bs3 meltaguns cost 80 points average number of hits = 2, chance of three hits = .25
3bs4 meltaguns cost 75 points average number of hits = 2, chance of three hits = .3

Foil, you're numbers are a bit off...but clos enough for government work...

You also forgot
4 bs3 meltaguns - chance of 4 hits = 6.25%
3 bs4 meltaguns - chance of 4 hits = 0.
