I ran across a Black Legion army-list on "Bolter and Chainsword" that had 6 havok squads; 3 Mark of Slaanesh in Elites and 3 with mark of Undivided in Heavy Support with a Chaos Lord with a mark of Chaos Undivided as the army leader.

I have found on pg 38 Chaos Codex (3rd printing) that "If a unit which normally occupies a Troop, Fast Attack or Heavy Support choice on the force organization chart is given a Mark of Chaos other than the Mark of Undivided then it will become an Elite choice instead."

I am of course assuming that the unit that now occupies an Elite choice no longer occupies its former choice.  If this is true then it definitely opens up alot of flexibility in choosing up to 6 Havoks or up to 6 bike squads or 3 Havoks with 3 preds or whatever.

Is this too good to be true?

I've looked at the 3rd Printing 'dex as well and, as far as I can see, it's legal as long as we're not mixing the marks of rival gods.

It is legal, but not really a new combination. Not really effective, as far as I can see, since Havoks can get quite expensive when fully kitted out...

You'd probably be better served going 6 heavies, the 3 normal being tanks of some sort and the other 3 elites as havocs in whatever flavor you like. I'd prolly go plasma for the points.

Hardly. Loyalist Marines can already take 6 devastator squads, 6 assault marine squads or 9 bike squads using the trait system, but you don't see armies like that very often. If you start loading a substantial proportion of your points into a specialist unit type, you inevitably lose flexibility and end up with obvious weaknesses. In the case of 6 havocs, which are even more expensive than devs with the necessary chaos marks, you end up with a very low model count and a very static army (or very short ranged if you go for plasmas.)

I know what you are saying Lewzor, but there is a part of me that really wants to play 6 squads of havoks with heavy bolters against my buddies Tyranid army. There is just something great about 24 heavy bolters unleashing 72 shots a round into an onrushing Tyranid horde. You are right that the army has some serious weaknesses and I would never play such a list in a tourney but in a one off with a known opponent, this could be fun.

That only matters if your Lord has the opposing mark. If you have a Black Legion undivided Lord you can take whichever marked units that you want.

Can you D.I.G. it?

Hey, Turn it around, since Vok weapons are so pricey: Take 6 Las/Plas Units as Troops, for your HW loadout. Now, add 6 Infiltrating BP/CCW squads with, say, 2 AWs each in HS and Elite. Ex - An Unmarked Lord with MoCU Voks in Elite slots. 12 Tac squads? Yum. Playa
