PVA a cotton ball to a 3/8in flat washer. Paint the whole thing black. Pluck the cotton upward in a Don King fashion. Drybrush Grey/ White. Done. Substitute Red or Yellow Easter Hay for a nice Phosphorus effect. HTH Playa

I'm assuming you use spray paint, correct? i can see the cotton ball flattening out with a paint dip...

If the cottonball is soaked in pva while making the don king hairdo it will be fairly sturdy and can hold up to a paintjob.

i bought those novelty bullet hole stickers people put on their cars . i cut out a piece of card board a slightly larger diameter than the sticker painted it black , stuck it on & sealed it w/fiberglass resin for durability. the first time i used them the guy i played against thought it was alot better than setting a model on its side & he thought it was funny

Steel wool makes good dark smoke for destroyed vehicles. Just pull it a bit to shape it and glue it to a base. Paint the base and bottom part like its fire and leave the rest as wool (or ink wash it or whatever). It doesn't seem appropriate for smoke launchers though. I just use cotton balls for that.
