First, how would you feel about someone playing their Ultramarines models as Deathwing?

Second, any ideas on interesting conversions to put in there?

So far I'm going to do a command squad that's got all the old school command characters. The techmarine will be in there with a servoharness equipped with an assault cannon. There will be a standard bearer and an apothocary as well. All will just play like normal command squad models.

I've gotten light years better at painting since I first started playing, and my ultras are my first army, so I'm chomping at the bit to repaint a bunch of it. Deathwing should look cool and be a managable number of models to have painted in a couple of months.

I've played people and know of many people who play deathwing armies using different chapters for the termies. As to the convos... I'd check out the Bolter and Chainsword forums. I'd post some specific pics but I can't seem to find the ones I'm thinking of.

The Ultramarine 1st company has a decorated past with telling of famous battles in which only the 1st company partook.

I see no reason why Ultramarines could not pull a "count as" with the deathwing.

too lazy at the moment to hit the books/FAQs, the "techmarine" with the servo harness/assault cannon would really just be an assault cannon termy and not a character with a squad weapon upgrade, correct?

Go to the second page of my gallery to see my ultrawing, but they are all old school termies. One thing might be to use the grey and blue scheme to make them look sorta old and pre-heresy or something like that. My venerable dread has this color scheme.

Yup. Just an assault cannon.

I see no problem with it. You could also play a Lysander-Wing Type army list as well.

Forgeworld Shoulder Pads should be given much consideration.

I thought about the FW pads, and may use them for a squad or two, but I like having that flat surface to paint something unique on each guy.

I'll take pics soon.

This could be your Adepticon Gladiator Army....

I will look for some conversion pictures, there is a squad worthy of consideration on page 110 of USWD 320.

Sorry to double post but one thing I did for my Terminator Command Squads was use the Black Templars cloth front on my Terminators, it only took a minimal of GS work.

The U.S. White Dwarf actually featured an army converted from just that idea not too long ago. It had a Dreadnought shooting a genestealer on the base, as I recall.

Sounds good. Easily done fluff wise.

Ya know, I remember when you weren't chaotic unless you had at least 3 eyes, some kind of grotsque extra limb, and your blood was at least boiling acid. Apparently all need these days to be chaos is some skulls and an arrow on your forhead. - Kaile Bloodhammer

write yourself a spot of fluff re how your army is a specialist strike force on some particular campaign and so are kitted out as (and play as) Deathwing, and I don't think anyone would complain, even in a tourney

I wanted to do this exact same idea with Salamanders (figured 'stubborn' works pretty well for salamander fluff, too).  I had a simple concern, do deathwing terminators have the intractable rule?  It's in the special rules in the dark angels codex, but the FAQ says that you pick terminators exactly from the space marine codex and add stubborn at +5 points per model, with no mention of intractable.

I look at it as an obnoxious rule that could really screw up a unit for a turn if they can't move towards an objective.

I don't think that applies to the terminators.

I've modelled the whole thing up and I'm painting it now.
