Looking good.

On heraldry: If you want to fancy up that :ultra: a bit, you could try adding a laurel wreath around it. While the Old School guy in my likes the idea of RT markings, captain is an understatement. You will need to bring back the rank of lieutenant commander. He was basically the second in command back in the RT chapter structure, and commanded the veterans of the 1st company.

I got inspired and basically finished him last night. On the knee I did a wreath and a '1' on his knee and nothing else on the pauldron. I do really like the LT Commander heraldry though and it is tempting to redo it....

I fancied up his base a bit more too..

Seen here. I'm so close to him being done I've got some good momentum so will probably base him tonight, I just PVA'd the sand on so it will be dry by then.

Finally finished this guy..

Rawg. I pleased with how he's come out. Pretty good too as he was made from spare bits from the classic Black Reach (around) box. There's the kneecap design, laurels with a '1' for the 1st Company.

I think the wrist mounted grenade launcher looks good, a lovely throwback to the old days...

Personal heraldry, a white Crux, his name went a bit shonky as it's really hard to keep in line on a curved surface which it's self is not level.....can't face doing it again!

Nid head! the eye is supposed to be closed but I'm not sure it's working, maybe just a red eye would be better?

Kept the shoulder pad design as it was, spent enough time on this guy already and he's not really likely to see tons of use :(

I hope you like him, it was a really fun project. I might try to set up some terrain and do a few snaps of him leading my 2 Terminator squads. I want to do my Contemptor soon and add it to my 1st Co. contingent but I think the Captain will be next for the SM. The next project I do will probably be the Ratlings as I need a bit of light relief instead of launching straight into a 4th SM character in a row!

Nice. Good balance on the white.

Ratlings would make a nice short project. But you say painting 4 SM characters in a row like it’s a bad thing.

S'up.

It's now the summer holidays, this makes it quite hard to get time to play with my toy soldiers as my son is always attached to me. However I did sneak a bit here and there and have been plodding along with Inso's HALFLINGS IN SPAAAAAAACE!

I wanted a nice eye catching but simple to execute scheme. I decided to paint clumps of the foliage in 3 different greens, the same as I use for my DPM camo on the SM Scouts. I added a few browns to break up the colours further..

The gun cowlings and boots/gloves became brown, the bare faces will be camo painted..

I gave them an all over thinned black wash..

And will redo the basecoats...

Thusly, I did a basic blue progression on the visors and have started the basing..

I think they're looking good so far. I plan to do a fair bit with the basing..

Camo paint. I have another group of 5 in progress and I will do a different pattern on the other face to help differentiate them..

More on these guys soon hopefully.

I took the plunge and went halve-ses on Killteam with MLCS. It look like a fun system and a lot of the rules seem like they would balance 40k quite well, I'll be interested to see if this is a bit of a test bed for 8.5. It means I've an excuse to bust out my 10 new (ish) Scouts to do next, I've enjoyed the 'light-relief' of painting these guys. I think SM Scouts will make a great KT too, snipers and heavy bolters backed up with shotguns and BP&CCW dudes could be quite effective.

Should be able finish these 5 Rats tonight and get into the next 5.

Hope you like em!

Killteam got delivered today Squeee! Looks good so far, the buildings will look nice I think and I'm enthused about doing some more Scouts.

Anyway I did finish the first 5 of the tiny mans...

I'm pleased with them. I like the bigger base idea on these guys and I think I will retro fit some of my Scouts to be the same, especially the snipers.

I remembered I had some clump foliage and a plethora of other flocks given to me by Alex. I tore up little bits of clump and tried to combine the lighter and darker green to make it look more realistic.

I'm noticing now that all of these pics are slightly out of focus....grrr

Pew Pew..

Used some different flocks and tufts to get a nice biodiversity....

I really like these models and they were fun to paint and build hedges around. Well done Inso.

The next 5 are mostly done too................................mostly

I won't get much of a chance to paint much over the hols but I might get a break from the kid for a bit and might do some then.

Hope you like the space hobbits, let me know what you think.

Wow quick job. Colour choices are good esp. the burlap-type stuff on the gun barrels which is very naturalistic.

Reckon these will look great in-game. If you get the chance you should pop some terrain out and get some shots of them in-situ.

Thanks! Great scuplts helped!

I've had family staying and so I've not had the time to paint owt. I did get KT and hope to read the rules one day. I do plan to build that terrain and base it primarily for 40k but obviously with applications for KT itself. I'm about to go away for a bit but next week I may be kid free for 5 days or so and if I can make myself may get a bit of painting modelling done. Hopefully a game of 40k or several of KT!.

Thanks! Me too. Not much 40k on the horizon at the mo though. I've a small window of time away from my son then I'm away for a few weeks, might get a bit done over the next few days.

I did play my first 2 games of Killteam however which were fun. MLCS came over and we clashed with my Scouts only force and his various T'pau filth. He did a bunch of pics so we might get to show you some of the action. I've enjoyed these games and feel some of the ideas would port over to 40k well and deal with some of the oft complained of issues.

I think I will try to power through the last Rats and then do some on the new terrain and my Scout force. So stayed tuned for that and crap jokes.

Hmm. Following reports of a low intensity contact, my Mechanised Cadre flew a drone team over the ruins of Cardboardia Prime - these were the last images captured before the drones went off-line:

p.s. - a photo battle report (of sorts, and sadly not officially featuring Ratlings) of our initial Killteam games will shortly be available over on my T'au Plog. I won't post a link though until It's on there.

Awesome, thanks for those pics.

In related Ratling news, this happened..

The other 5 got painted.

I tried to vary the colours to help differentiate them from their clone (there are 5 sculpts)...

All 10..

Pew Pew. Again very pleased with this unit. Inso is a great sculptor and you should check his blog.

https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/731849.page

Much awesomeness abounds.

Also I found myself doing this...

Sprues...

Not sprues.

I'm still covered in glue. They go together well and the scope for custom builds is great. The lack of locator lugs/tabs means it can be assembled in any way but also will make it less solid and I will probably base these...it probably took 3-4 hours which is quickish I suppose. The top wall on the 2 large buildings are loose so can be removed and used as further walls.

Look forward to some KT reports as mentioned by MLCS. I've started work on some Scouts too, more on that next..

Yes I will do that. It's obvious to me now.

Seriously I'm not sure how to paint them. Thinking a bleached bone limestone look but that's what everyone is doing. I want to add some of that fancy ivy creeping about and add to my existing woods create a nice abandoned ruins in woodland type table. Nice to hear from you, settled on an army yet?

Nevelon wrote:Nice job on the rats. Cool action pic. Building looks fun. I keep thinking of getting more terrain.

I've never really done terrain so I'm trying to contribute. I think it will be worth it. Eventually.

I'm off to the motherland for 2 weeks so there won't be much toy coverage. I did have a big go last week so will post a bit of that...

I got these guys a while ago, eBay rescues. They are slick with plastic glue but not terribly put together. Serviceable. I've a handful of bits too, some left over from my original 15 Scouts and some I part ordered...

I've got 20 painted Scouts already but I've enough here to do another 10. This will allow me to add some new guys into the old units so they can be armed better eg 10 Snipers, 10 bolters and 10 CCW/BP guys (with heavies etc). Also, and more importantly, I can make a Kill team at the same time..roster is..

Specialists:
Leader-Shotgun, Chainsword
Sniper-Sniper rifle, Camo
Heavy-Heavy bolter, Camo
Scout-Shotgun

Dudes:
Sniper rifle, Camo
Bolter
Bolter
CCW/BP
CCW/BP

I need 2 CCW/BP Scouts for the KT, so these guys are up..

This guy got a new hand with a vintage RTB01 dagger (as I hate the daft Scout short swords they come with) and some more pouches and grenades..I've run low on 'interesting' SM heads, I will order some, he might get a new one.

This dude got his arm broken and reattached at a less crazy angle, RTB01 dagger and more kit..

Heavy looked too boring, another interesting DW head...

Proposed Camo cloak, he is missing the little clip on shoulder pad so this is probably a good idea. He has one in KT though this is technically illegal as only Missile launchers can get one. We are applying a sort of Index-Codex rationale here as the ML can get one as there's one in his box set whilst HB can't as they aren't in his set. In 40k they both can so I did. There a few of these instances in KT which is daft and also inconsistent. Scout Sarges can't take any fancy gear whilst IG Sarges can for instance.

Proposed Sarge, not sure about the Camo cloak as he doesn't have one in KT. He also doesn't have a power axe but I want it for 40k, he may get it later in KT however..will involve some heavy conversion work to pull this off though..

Scout WiP. I found the head in the DW kit, the last place I've got to plunder for interesting heads, and I think it looks like a 'Scout' (which is his Specialism). He's supposed to be giving a 'hold' hand signal (not the 'fight the power' salute), at higher levels he can assist those around him and I wanted to show that.

That's enough for now. Hope you liked. Look out for a after action report of this team in action (well not these models yet) over on MLCS blog soon.

Great update, and once again the palette on those Ratlings is badman.

Nice to see progress on the new Scouts. Speaking of which there is a flacid account of the Scout's first action in Killteam over on my P'log.

As a taster here they are at muster, and getting stuck in...

Sorry for the blurry photos - I'll try harder next time

Thanks for those pics and after action report. Pity about the 2nd game as there was a bit more movement and stuff in it.

More on the Kill Team..

The Sarge got his camo claoked body replaced and another DW head was found..I think this works better...

Here he is nearly done. Need to tidy the wrist and axilla up, the axe arm is from a shotgunner (the actual shotgun is off a scout biker). In the above pic he is actually dual weilding shotguns, sadly this isn't an option!

The Scout scout got a base, I'm thinking of toning it down however, thoughts? Might be a bit too high.

Added a burnoose kind of thing (which I can now only see as Rupert the Bears scarf and may paint as such) and filled in the gaps on the arm (it's supposed to fit round chest poaches and so needed filling and the end of the pauldron adding back in). Still looks like the black power salute, might change the angle of the wrist a mil or so. Do you think it works?

Heavy dude got more camo cloak added. It is hard to do large areas of cloth and I've not made a good job of it, however it looks ok from the front and that's all that matters!

I can't help but see him as 'I'm gonna have me some fun' from Predator, and may have to try and do a good black skintone for once.

These guys are coming on well and complete bar some finishing touches. I've had a few bolter arms arrive so I can finish off the other dudes. I'm still away for another week but am feeling enthused to continue when I get the chance. These builds have been fun and different, it's nice to build something characterful. They are a bit more 'comic book' than my usual output but that feels right for KT, they should be a bit special/daft.

Hope you like.

Love the sarge with the axe.

I think the fist up works fine. Having the arm angled back a bit makes it more like a hold gesture, less like a salute. Bet getting the subtitles of posture across in minis is rough. I’ve not generally been happy with my attempts. I think the base might be a little tall. Not MFA tall, as he’s kneeling, just a bit high.

Greenstuff work looks fine to me.

Thanks! Yes I had it right with one bluetack version, getting it right twice is harder though, I may fiddle with him (and try to fix the pose). I think I will trim the scout Scout's base too.

Had family staying this week so that's put a crimp on the wargasm, however I did manage to (mostly) finish the Scout builds..

The Scout scout has had the height of his base halved and his angle changed which I think makes the fist signal better..

Predator inspired Heavy with HB, just got a frag, the can of worms cloak was mostly left, I will only photograph him from the front. Problem solved.

Sarge got a bit of a tidy, my scalpel blade snapped and I only had a shard left to do most of the green stuffing, I've found one more so I can do the fiddly bits better (like his wrist, which needs a smoothing layer).

Another guy who need a bit more love is a bolter dude for the KT. He got another DW head but in clipping off the neck dome thing the clippers slipped and took off his chin. So I've got to tidy up the GS repair.

Other bolter guy, I think this head is from the new(ish) Devastator box..

BP&CCW guy, he got a new head too, also from the Dev box I think, ordered off 'Bits and Kits'. Also replaced the stupid scout swords with a knife from the 'Strike Force' era (metal MkVII bodies with crappy plastic arms)...

The rest are fillers to finish off my squads for 40k...here's a use of the sniper sarge torso. I added the forearm and the hand with a frag is an IG one. The shotgun arm had the trigger hand cut off and another handle added.

Filler bolter guy, from the eBay rescue, couldn't face rebuilding him, but he's not in the KT..

All this means for 40k, I have a nice short ranged Scout squad with Sarge with Shotgun and Power Axe, 2 Shotgunners, Heavy Bolter and the rest BP&CCW dudes..

A medium ranged unit with a BP&Power Sword Sarge, Shotgunner, Heavy bolter and the rest bolters. In the back the long range unit can be seen (all painted already) with a Missile launcher and the rest with sniper rifles..

This will give a sizable 10th Co. force especially as I've got Telion and a LS Storm done too. This is great as I love Scouts and they are in a good place with rules, they just need to be about 3 pts cheaper....but that's a wider Marines being total gak issue that I hope the Chapter Approved addresses a bit. Fingers crossed.

In other news I got my Conquest delivery, I've donated the dirty chaos but I now own some Primaris! I'm not sure how I feel about this. I will make a KT with these 3 and the 3 Reivers off the next issue. I put one together and find myself staring at it unsure of whether it's good or not. It's strange.

Hopefully I'll finish up with those little bits of tidying and get these Scouts undercoated so more soon. ish.

I've been inspired to get on with painting suddenly and have been at it with my Scouts (oh er).

I haven't painted any Scouts for ages so will have to try and remember how to paint DPM camo.

Basecoating...

Black wash, old style ink, thinned a lot to prevent covering up all the camo details..

Reapplied basecoats and faces have been repainted and washed in chestnut and brown..

Once the base colours have been redone I added the little black lines part of the camo..

Here they are approaching being done, faces have been mostly finished, I will add camo and am thinking of painting on black lines al la Predator era Arnie. Basic highlights have been applied and chapter insignia added. I've done these dudes to a better level than my existing 20 guys and, in the interests of consistancy, I went back over them and added the grey highlight to the black carapace armour. I want the KT guys to look better but not wildly different from the rest of the dudes as it would be too crashing for 40k.

MLCS has suggested a 1k game using all the 10th Co guys once they're done. Sounds good though T'pau tend to squish Scouts pretty hard (and indeed Marines in general), we intend to do a narrative type game, maybe an outpost assault type of deal. Could be fun but will have to find a handicap that works.

More on these guys soon, hope you like 'em!
