Maybe Lord of the Rings is AWESOMESAUCE (which it is), I really do think building our own city on the server would give the server as a whole a bit more flair, more personality. Make it more like an individual.

Build some Arnor ruins, or the shire.

Suburbia.

Suburbia is great, but it's got no unity whatsoever. It's a ton of houses next to each other.

for the shire, we already have brandywine (though it's really just a hall in a hill surrounded by regular houses)... though the shire would be nice and fairly simple to build, in that it really won't require much planning apart from "build/terraform a bunch of hills, build houses in"...

as for a unique individual city and suburbia lacking unity, that's kind of a contradiction in terms- wanting a city to be individual and unified.

unless you mean the whole city to be individual (being original) with each house being unified, but IMO everyone having similar houses is just boring. That's why I liked dakkatown- yes it was an ugly mess of a place, but it was OUR ugly mess of a place- there wasn't another place like it because everyone built whatever the hell they wanted- each house was unique. It's just a shame there weren't more aesthetic places like yak's and less ugly ones like the cobble towers...

Shrug. You'll never get a large number of people to agree on one aesthetic. Suburbia is set up in a way that we are all one unified community while also allowing as much creativity as makes sense within the confines of the community. Thus, it allows for a lot of different people with different aesthetics. And in the end, I think it actually works rather well together, barring a few exceptions-- each house having its own unique style is what makes it work.

If you want one town with one unified aesthetic... good luck getting a good number of the server to agree on THAT.

Osgiliath is slightly less white than Minas Tirith, what about Isengard? Cirith Ungol?

Isengard is at least just a big black tower surrounded by a couple of trees and a wall/a big black tower surrounded by huge cave systems full of lava (and a creeper infested hellhole). Cirith Ungol was where the Necromancer retreated right? Just a big black square tower in the middle of a dead forest. ...Lots of big black and big white towers in this thread.

I don't think so, I think that was another fortress that I forget the name of. Cirith Ungol is where Grishnak takes Frodo, and the 'Not if I stick you first' line takes place.

Minas Ithril is what you are after methinks. The otherworldly fortress where the Witchking gets crowned.

Btw, according to the books minas thirith is black.

Minas Morgul was where the Witch King was crowned, Minas Ithil was back way way when it was a Gondorian fortress, and was, you guessed it, white.

Osgiliath would at least be relatively flat...

point- that's what mostly put me off helm's deep. Osgiliath would just need a relatively flat area by a river.

plus, as said, being white is less of a deal there:



smoothstone or stone brick could pass. Plus mossy and cracked stone brick would work quite well to help break it up a bit...

the thing is, getting the "ruined" look right- quite often, ruins look too artificial.

It's more of an off-white...

My solution to that is I make several obsidian explosives caps then detonate them. It looks as if the place has been shot with cannons or something. It passes for general ruins as well.

And I don't see why I can't just use worldpainter to make part of a map. Or worldedit, then splice it over. Simples.
But Dark doesn't like that kind of thing.
What I am trying to say is; if we're going to do a project on a huge scale, there are 2 things that are near mandatory for it. Creative, and worldedit.

All the other projects have been done without worldedit...

I don't really like the idea of spending hours building a massive city, to then have it blasted apart with tnt.

I think Minith Tirith could defintely work despite all the whiteness. Wool, stone bricks, cracked stone bricks, stone etc and the first wall would be black.

Good possible terroforming location for Helms Deep/Minith Tirith/anything needing a mountain.

Personally I'd rather do the Rohirrim capital, Edoras-- especially Meduseld.

That sounds more realistic Mellisia. A little small though as far as I understand, though then again its representation in the game The Third Age was alright.

After reading the last few pages of discussion, this is by far the most sensible idea and something I'd be willing to help with.

Some googling later. This is pretty feasible for survival minecraft.

Also Edoras is far more varied in color and style than the others.

edit: and you know what? We can even make "Auld Town" and "New Town" in to NPC villages!
