Instead of trapdoors, you might try using signs on the inside of the pit. If signs are placed on the "zombie side" then enemy mobs will perceive it as a block they can walk on and will happily walk into it, on the other side though I think it will appear as a pit and protected mobs will avoid it. Might be worth an experiment with other neutral mobs like sheep or pigs.

i find the easiest thing to do is just stick a cobble block infront of the door, keeping the villagers in and the zombies out. once your walls and torches are covered you can set the villagers free.

You could make a Villager spawner room after you catch a few. Close it shut with iron doors and they should be safe. If that's creepy then just make a prison with 2 Villagers in separate cells so they don't start spawning if you expand the town. Though they will use a house like every other villager, even if they can't get to it.

What's the current status of the End? If the dragon is still around could we fix another date to murder it?

Oh yes, I had forgotten about that. Yes the dragon is still there if people want to arrange another evening of general chaos

Oooh, another Dragon fight. I'm in for that. To give people time to sign up for it should we say a week Saturday? (So the 1st of March) Anyone who is good with time-zones care to suggest a time that would work for both Europeans and Americans? (Sorry people down under)

I'll start stockpiling arrows and other equipment in my stronghold again for whenever it takes place

My GW2 guild has members from the US, Europe and Australasia; and we find that holding events at 2pm UK time makes it just about possible for everyone to attend ... it's very early for the US and very late for Australia/New Zealand but it's achievable.

By blocked off I mean that there is a row of cobblestone blocks at the level of the top step so you can't get into the portal is all...

So, have you folks actually agreed on a time to fight the Ender Dragon?

If you do what Binidj says and start at 2PM UK it will be:
6AM to 9AM for the USA (5AM Alaska)
10PM to 1AM for Australia

But I don't see any Australians getting in on this, I know I'm not.

So if there are no Australians signed up you have plenty of time to choose from. Maybe 5 hours forward if there are any Americans who wake up at midday on Saturdays. So 7PM, UK.

Why do hostile mobs keep spawning in the tree farm? Gah! I visited yesterday to see a crater where the door should have been. Finding Skeletons and Zombies in there. Maybe I should just grow a bunch of Pumpkins or get some Glowstone and replace the entire floor. Surely that would be enough illumination. Right?

Is this your personal tree farm or the one at spawn? Either way, since trees can obscure light sources, a tree farm will need to be checked for block light after all saplings have grown.

If it's the farm at spawn I can take a look at it later to make sure it's properly lit up.

Yeah, it's the one at the spawn. I decided to move all the Lanterns out and place a lot of torches in there because I wanted to spam a single type of light and there weren't enough pumpkins. There are so many torches that each side of any tree is surrounded by a torch one space away, but it wasn't enough, I saw a Creeper as I was passing by. The Lanterns are in the chest between the Enchanting room and the Nether Gate along with a few (10?) Pumpkins that can be turned into more lanterns.

I hope you can fix it. Otherwise I might start mass producing lanterns.

Ok, tree farm is fixed (and slightly prettified).

The problem was that there was a stone brick ledge running all around the building a couple of blocks down from the ceiling upon which mobs could spawn. I've kept the ledge but replaced all of the torches on the roof with embedded jack-o-lanterns; block light on the ledge doesn't drop below 8 now. I also replaced all the torches at ground level with jack-o-lanterns and covered them with green carpet, so it looks a little prettier now.

I had put Jack O lanterns in there because people kept knocking the torches out when cutting the trees down. I thought there was enough.

AHA! That does sound like the flaw in my design! Many thanks for finding and fixing it.

While I was bimbling about at spawn yesterday, I noticed a lack of pumpkin, watermelon, and reed farms. Would there be any objections if I popped some in? I was thinking of placing them around the edges of the spawn plaza.

Also, would there be any objections if I tidied up the nether hub a bit? Just by moving the chests to somewhere less in the way.

How about Cocoa Beans as well? Also I placed a lot of reeds to the south, below the bridge, about 25 bases or so.

How long has this base been standing that half the livestock and crops are only being added just now?

Were there be dragons....

Most people once they have gathered some gear just head of into the distance and will probably never need to come back to spawn so i doubt it has been on the top of too many players agendas.

Also, my village "Jericho" is just a short walk directly south of Spawn (follow the road) and I have almost every type of farm (Chicken, Cows, wheat, potato, carrot, sugarcane, melon, pumpkin...), enchanting and alchemy facilities, some Villagers to trade with, a nether portal, tree farm, Zombie XP grinder...

If more public facilities are need, maybe someone could put a sign up and direct people to head south to my town.

The spawn area is actually pretty well catered for, I just noticed the lack of pumpkins because I ran out yesterday and had to head back to the Mountain Crown to get some more.

I think it would be nice if we had a social space where we could meet up and maybe have some shops or something. At the moment we all seem to stick very much to our respective bases.

Might be a cool idea. I'll throw any resources or work needed at it if anyone else is interested.

I could probably start another trade post if you guys want. (though instead of the redstone type probably will make it a manual minecart type)

a Potions shop would be cool too. Btw do we have a nether fortress? i getting some witherskulls and blazerods.

There are two that I know of (one of which is mine) but I haven't organised myself sufficiently to create a grinder from the blaze spawner (originally I had 2 but one was destroyed before I realised how useful they were) so while you're very welcome to go hunting in there do please be very careful around the spawner itself. Just take the iron door on the left as you approach the Mountain Crown portal and carry on to the end of the passageway, there is a chamber about halfway along which has an Ender chest to save you too much to-ing and fro-ing.

Feel free to build anything in and around spawn that you like. Just be aware that spawn does have a protected zone, marked out by the larger sandstone square around the spawn grass square. You won't be able to modify the area inside that, but anywhere else is fine.

I've moved all of the construction detritus from the hub to just behind the gate to spawn, no materials have been lost or destroyed ... just moved.

Just don't be a dick about it, obviously...

I believe there may be an issue with Sleitusmithr's villagers at Sacred breeding out of control ... he was mentioning some issues over that way earlier.

Well there goes my plan to build a gigantic phallus at spawn.
