I'll volunteer to help build. I'm at a decent stopping point on Sul right now.
How big should it be?
And are we going for Colosseum or more of a naturalistic arena like the Hunger Games?(in which case it might be better to wall off one of the Continents instead)

How about one of the 2 deserts to either side of the spawn? If someone chooses a region (not limited to deserts) and tells me the desired dimensions, I can flatten it and fill in the ground with the desired common chunk. If you want a big region that you can fit mini forts in and such, I can also put a small wall up around it to keep mobs out. I have a ton of stone for bricks that I only smelted as a way to get rid of the annoyingly large amounts of lava in the areas I'm digging up without wasting it.
Mmm, terraforming. I wonder how many people prefer building on top of the natural landscape with a few changes, compared to people who just want to make a clean slate.

I went about the map, looking for people who used the landscape or leveled it and how they used their biome, and I came across this.

How did they get an island that looks like they lifted a slice of the world and dropped it into the water?

That area was literally carried over from the last world.

What's so special about that area? Aside from what I assume is a really big hole. Or are there a few more of these?
If this can be done between server restarts then it actually makes me want to make a really good area, just to become worthy of such a privilege.
http://www.darkinnit.com/newdakkamap/#/-3486/64/-3320/-1/0/0
Is this an Obsidian house another slice from the previous world? With a bridge that got cut but hasn't been sealed. How many of these are there? Was this kept for that 'villager spawner' looking thing?
I see a Golem farm near more sliced land, how have I not noticed this before?

These things are everywhere. Including a disappointing cathedral that was never completed. It seems kind of sad when people bring their projects over but don't finish them or give them the love of filing down the seam lines that come from the transfer.

Yup. Dark will usually carry over structures from previous worlds by request.
That disappointing cathedral is probably mine. I inherited it from someone who was banned and just haven't found the time to finish it on top of my other projects. Such is life in Minecraft.

A lot of the 'abandoned' ones are from people who're stuck on FtB.
the Mesa, at least, is being (slowly) terraformed, in a way.
I tend to try to work with the land, but if a mountain doesn't quite fit the desired look, I'll take it out. Or if there's a flat plain where a mountain needs to be, I'll add one.
The "Hole" is Chasmholm. It's not very impressive from the air (yet), but underground is a netword of about a dozen crisscrossing ravines that IanSturrock's been developing into a rather amazing Dwarven cavern system. The towers are just his latest work- he's trying to develop a good Cyclopean look for them, which he'll then continue by spreading them into a full on city aboveground. Automatically Appended Next Post: Actually, going back to the "keep chunks for the update stone" discussion- I was thinking this would be a good place to keep un-generated. It's got a good amount of land compared to water, and should allow for nice strip-mining.

Seeing as people are discussing multiple versions of PVP, arena style and an open battlefield with forts etc, why don't we build two separate locations?
A Coliseum style arena strictly for PVP. A good location would be the northern-most end of the desert directly south of Spawn.

This forest to the west of Spawn might make for an interesting Team PVP open battlefield. We could thin the trees out somewhat, and build forts on hills.
http://www.darkinnit.com/newdakkamap/#/-385/64/274/-2/0/0
The advantage of both locations is that they're very close to spawn.

Yeah I need to go back to Cyclopean towers... probably will do once we have access to the new stones. Been occupied with my village lately when on MC, but haven't been on at all for a month or so due to work pressures.
I'm definitely interested in an opt-in PVP arena, or even an arena complex. Although this sort of thing is probably at its best when done as a one-off event with a specially made server --

Actually, if I remember correctly, dark generated the map to the boundaries once the world was initially created, and then once all the structures were carried over he re-added that "fog of war."
So a lot of that space that looks ungenerated is just unexplored.

Yeah, I'm sure if you dug back several tens of pages you find the exact amount. I want to say it was pre-generated to 4000 blocks in all directions.

Head north from Spawn, and follow signs. If you go pretty much to the end of the Great North Trunk Tunnel, then turn right, that should get you there. Or shout, and I'll give you a guided tour, sometime.

It's not true - blank areas on the map are ungenerated terrain.
I'd like to put a stop to all the "don't go exploring!" pleas. Heaven forbid anyone have any fun in a computer game, right?
If there is an update that brings new terrain, I can simply reset any unpopulated chunks so they get regenerated. Or even make a temporary world find a big island or landmass and copy it across to dump in one of the many large oceans we have. Not to mention that exploring out to ungenerated terrain is nowhere near as difficult as is being made out to be. Several people have mentioned that they're already done so.
World borders? Hell no.

Shadow Captain, Chasmholm and surrounds are right in the NE corner of the map, around 3000,-3500. I do recommend a guided tour though. It is very easy to get lost down there (although it is pretty safe, so as long as you have a stack or two of food...).

Build all the Walls!
I'd actually kinda love it if this server eventually ended up just covered in a labyrinthine network of player-built tunnels, walls, cities and towns, with nary a spot of non-built-upon land.
