Well some people have been discussing building gladiatorial arenas, roads and nether tunnels in collaborative efforts.

I think the main difference between this map and the previous one is that the old one was several years old by the time it was retired (I wasn't on it so might be wrong).

Over the years the population density would have increased as new players joined over the years. Various players would build something, get bored and move to a new area and build something else. New players might not want to travel several km's away from spawn to find a new uninhabited region to build in, and so would just find somewhere relatively close to spawn, close to other players. Over time, you'd get dense collections of builds.

I moved here because I got fed up of playing in a flat featureless desert. Kiln2001 was a new player who stayed with me at Jericho (my first base) for a month or two as a guest, before he left and travelled about 2km north to build his own place. I visited him and found his new location much more interesting, so with his consent I claimed one of the mountains and built a tower. I've now moved in for good and abandoned my original location (Jericho) but left it standing for other players to use, visit, explore, admire etc.

Another reason why I decided to move was because I liked the prospect of having more active neighbours. I now about about 6.

This new map is only a couple months old. Give it a couple years and it might start to look similar to the previous one with more players having no choice but to build close to one another if they're unwilling to travel vast distances to find uninhabited lands. Theres also the possibility that the population dropped, with some players not wanting to start from scratch.

There's been plenty of collaborations recently. I mean not to list them off but IRC Anvildude has a thing with a bunch of players in his castle, Mel and Iustis built a village and so did Oshunai and I on the FtB server. People talk about those things in game more because those their involved with are probably also online. If someone builds something that annoys them then the chances are that person's not online (otherwise they'd only come to this thread if they didn't solve the matter in game). If there's an issue I'd say its easier to draw attention to it if its posted here instead of discussing it with a small number of people in game.

I personally don't like others building next to me without asking because I'm a sociopath. ...Wait, hang on, other reasons. People always have these grand plans (that rarely come to fruition) about what to do with their plots. Someone sticking themselves on that spot and screw those plans up. If there's a discussion over the matter beforehand then the other person can integrate themselves with what you're doing, but I guess that doesn't happen much as it requires a bit too much discussion. I'm fine with collaborating, its when someone plunks themselves down and doesn't acknowledge that you're not comfortable with what their doing that can annoy me. If someone says you're too close to them and you start arguing that you aren't, just consider that there's an infinite world to build in, why not move elsewhere and not escalate the issue? Ask Darkinnit has said; with the implementation of the nether saying that you aren't willing to travel too far from spawn because it takes too long is a bit moot. I'm what a thousand blocks out and it takes me seconds to travel to spawn through the nether (well with the odd bit of drowning and a rail link involved).

Unofficially the rule is not to build within 200 blocks of someone without asking. Its not written in stone as that could be taken as introverted. There was a case where one user took the idea that the rule's unofficial as it isn't a rule at all and went about building within 100 blocks of people over and over. That guy wasn't banned though because he wasn't breaking any particular rules of the server, but I would say that one shouldn't flat out ignore that rule or it'll just make you come across as a git.

Also, make sure you never build a house on top of peoples houses !

He built a house on top of the house of someone who built on someone else's land as a joke. He was subsequently banned for it whilst the guy who originally built on the land was not for ...reasons. The other user at least doesn't come on the server any more, nor Dakka either (where I don't have a high opinion of him either).

I have an underwater tunnel people need to go through if they want to access my house from my nether portal. Its just a straight swimming section as, like my old nether tunnel lava door, I consider people would take offence if I killed them for coming into my house when I'm not online.

Heh, I think I remember that. I nearly drowned.

Then be glad I added glow stone lights and blocked in the side tunnels which led to caves with the odd skeleton head thrown in. *Though btw there's a waterfall to the left of the portal as you come out which takes you right to the surface. ...I still take the long way round though (it leads straight to my storage room).

The levels of hyperbole in this thread astound me. Janje was banned for being... let's just say "beligerent and rude" to put it very mildly (as well as it being the final straw of a long string of issues). Not for any joke house.

If people wish to remember differently because it makes them sound better, so be it.

Actually no, I'm here to talk Minecraft and take a look at the things others have made on the Server.

I See no attempts of Trolling. All I saw was me trying to have a Joke and a Laugh with the other members of the Community. Just because I'm not on the Server doesn't mean I'm not allowed to talk to you guys.

You popped up out of nowhere to remind everybody of the time you got banned for griefing. Then the Admin reminded everyone that you were not banned for a "joke house", you were banned for a pattern of rude and belligerent behaviour. And then you remarked that you and Wyrmalla were "rude to each other all the time".

You're just making a terrible first impression with me (I don't recall speaking to you previously).

If I sound hostile, its probably because of how smug you're coming across, and the fact that Darkinnit remarked that he banned you for rude and belligerent behaviour (i.e. being a jerk).

So anyway let's talk about minecraft instead of some guy who got banned for being a jerk to everyone else.

Does anyone have any clue when the new sticky-piston setup will be added to the main build? I want to use it to make simpler, larger doors...

Mel what do you mean by simpler, larger doors? i currently run 5 wide by 2 high door setup, i had it as wide as 7 but my revamp has narrowed it. The whole setup is relatively simple and allows the door to open and stay open until it is activated on the other side.

to keep mobs from opening the door, the outside activation is a button while the inside is pressure plates.

i could make a build of it on a creative single player world to show others how i have built my gates.

With the new slime stuff, you can have very simple and small 3x3 door.

I recommend looking up the slime stuff in the more recent weekly snapshots.

As a general rule, if you're banned from a community (in this case, the Dakka Minecraft community) for inappropriate behavior, you're typically not welcome back. That's why you were banned. So, you can't really try to reinsert yourself into said community w/out causing a least a little friction. Frankly, I'm having a hard time believing you don't get that and aren't really just trying to stir up gak.

I'm still a little shocked we haven't gotten bigger doors/gates yet - we're still stuck with the standard doors. I'd absolutely LOVE a functional, craftable castle gate or drawbridge or just bigger wood doors.
