That is.. really, really cool. Where'd you get it/how'd you install it? I'm not a big fan of texture packs, but I think I could handle a shader or two.

I know mine will.
I'm actually surprised I can really. I'm using the same laptop I've been using for quite a while now. I actually need to upgrade it, then I'd get one of the high end shaders. Has a GeForce GT 330M - 2.8gb 4GB RAM Core i5 M 520

That initial pun...
But my aim for after I get a better pc is the 1 one. One of the most interesting and useful things of these shaders is how when you hold a torch it lights up the area around you nicely.

After several years of not playing, I have decided to start again. Any tips on what to do? I am not familiar with the new things, I stopped after 1.8. Should I start with the Dakka Server?
If you want. We've got a good spawn area set up now, and we're generally pretty helpful. It's pure Vanilla, though, so no map mods or anti-creeper tweaks.

Nope. Pure vanilla, if you're caught with mods that affect gameplay (that is, texture packs, visuals things aren't problematic, but stuff like maps that can show you death locations or cave systems or whatever are verboten) you'll be banned.
There is a Dakkadakka Modpack server as well, but that's a different thread, and that's the whole shebang.

As I say in the FAQ, I'm only against things that really break the spirit of the game, like speed/flying mods or x-ray/item finding mods.
Mini-maps are usually ok. I wouldn't consider death locations a huge cheat. However, I do agree that some have features that could be considered "cheaty", like making it obvious where dungeons etc can be found underground. But I don't know if I'd go as far as a ban because someone is using an overly verbose mini-map, I'd maybe just look on disapprovingly and tut. Mini-maps that only show underground locations that are already lit up are the "ethical" approach I feel. JourneyMap has a "FairPlay" version, but it's currently only for Minecraft 1.7.10 - http://journeymap.techbrew.net/download/

From what I have seen thus far mods to me are not exactly as useful either. Considering most of us know how to find diamonds pretty easily. (IE Going near lava level or getting yourself trapped in leaves and being able to see underground)
Even though those are technically exploits and glitches. I think they are completely fair. Though I remember when I just died sometimes and randomly my items would get duplicated. It was very wierd and I refused to exploit it.
Though way back and I think I showed this to darknnit I accidently made a duplication design and I accidently made over 100 stacks of powered rails.....
Exploits happen and they are incredibly funny to see.
Though why am I talking about exploits? Because mods are very similar but they are only obtainable to single players. If not everyone has them at the same time it kind of is cheap.
You guys can have regular shader mods or heaven forbid a minimap.
Plus we have enough resources at spawn to help people out too at spawn.

From whom are unforgiven we bring the mercy of war.
It's like a race where we're all using the same car. No one cares if we want to have that car a different colour or wear fancier clothes than the other racers, as long as they all perform the same.

I just use chunk mining.
There is one diamond vein in every 16x16 chunk, close to bedrock. So I just carve out a chamber at bedrock, mark out the boundaries of a 16x16 chunk and dig out 2x1 tunnels crisscrossing the chunk at various heights (Y) until I find the vein. Then I mark the chunk as cleared and move on to the next. Its labour intensive, but no more so than normal branch mining and you're guaranteed to find diamonds.
For some reason there's this one village where no matter what the settings are for me (even everything pure vanilla) my fps will drop to 0-1. Really annoying.

Have you already given darkinnit the location? Could just be a zombie army or a perpetual chicken machine or something, which are easily dealt with, but easily uncovered by darkinnit... or so I believe.

Watch out with the lightning this time
Someone needs to start putting up monuments and making sacrifices to zeusinnit, before he becomes displeased again!
Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.
Excerpt from "Seeress of Kell", Book Five of The Malloreon series by David Eddings.
"You need not fear us, unless you are a dark heart, a vile one who preys on the innocent; I promise, you can’t hide forever in the empty darkness, for we will hunt you down like the animals you are, and pull you into the very bowels of hell." Iron - Within Temptation
If the HoloLens can actually do stuff like this once released (and for PC) I think we can safely say Dark will truly be a god. Wherever he gazes, lightning will follow .

It improved after a while, the village had a large cave system under it so I figured a zombie army must have been under it. Exploring it later I also found a zombie spawner down there, I think under the village or not far from it. Lit it up so hopefully it'll never happen again now.

There's at least 3 iron grinders that I can think of on the server so it's probably not hard. I'd rather use it to make a airship over the village and mass drop golems into it though.
If we could just have stuff that could place blocks we could have golem factories.

Notch now lives in his shiny palace in Beverly Hills. I don't think he attended Minecon, if he did it was in secret or only back-stage as no-one has mentioned him at all.
Minecon was a load of fun and although Duckinnit was very fragile, he survived the journey home.
If you missed the Minecon livestreams and want to see any bits of it you can find them here: http://www.twitch.tv/mojang/profile/past_broadcasts Skip around in the videos as there's a lot of padding between the live events and panels.
