So I watched a couple different ones today. Hamatora is pretty cool, but I think I'm in love with Nobunagun (gak yes, second Oda Nobunaga related anime in the season? My inner fan boy is dancing... and burning a few villages down) I mean hell the female lead is a fellow weapon geek for one!

Even better then that (so far) is Witch Craft Works, which I am enjoy a whole hell of a bunch, the messing with gender roles is just the icing on a fun, action packed incendiary cake.

Tonari No Seki-kun and The Pilot's Love Song seem pretty good so far too!

....gak.

I just realized how much HASN'T debuted yet.

I apparently need to quit my job and just watch anime this season.

So far I'm not especially enamored with this season's stuff. I think there's only 3 mecha shows. I did like what I saw of Nobunaga the Fool, though what was up with the sci-fantasy versions of them dreaming about their historical counterparts? That was odd.

Buddy Complex has the potential to be interesting. I'm loving the mecha designs for it though. It has a very early 90s feel to them. They remind me of stuff out of Victory Gundam or Xenogears. So naturally I'm sure we won't get any model kits or toys. :(

Gundam continues to tease me with things that don't have models and probably never will.

Aside from those, I'm not seeing much I care for. So I've been on a bit of an old school binge and got all of the original Casshern anime and all of Armored Trooper Votoms. Great stuff.

I hadn't seen it before now, but Casshern is dark as hell, even by today's standards.

Any good steampunk anime out there? Apart from Escaflowne, that is. I just watched Steamboy and I want to see some more of the genre.

The opening seems to suggest that they are reincarnations living in a sort of next life in another world.

I just want to express my joy for Thursdays!

Kill la Kill and Samurai Flamenco are back (already translated to boot!) and I think around 7 new animes debuted today.

feth YES, THURSDAYS!

(Now, where in hell do I find the time to watch all this...)

EDIT: HOOOOOOOOLY gak! This week's KLK episode raised the bar to a whole new level! This was outrageously good! I want to meet the authors, give them a manly hug and pay them a beer for making such a fantastic show!

Seconded.

Spoiler:
Satsuki deliberately let Ryuko keep a scrap of Senketsu, I know it. Also, Ira having Mako join the trip... hmm...

I also liked how the areas with lower share holdings by REVOCS was due to low population density. Added a bit of realism, if that makes any sense.

Spoiler:
I feel Ira was lenient on purpose too. After all, she'd have been punished for a whole damn month. Satsuki's orders probably? She seems to have seen through Nui's plans.

I think my face through most of the episode was something like this:

It'd be cool if Ryuko and Satsuki had to team up to end her annoying existence, but I don't see that happening. Then again, I didn't see Senketsu being turned into confetti happening, either.

Steampunk Anime... I'm not sure, really. You'd think that Japan would be all over a Genre that has the potential for crazy awesome that Steampunk has. But there's also a few that are kinda/sorta steampunk.

I've heard TurnA Gundam is supposedly kinda steampunk, and I guess it is at least in aesthetics. There's also Last Exile which is kinda Steampunk, but honestly more Dieselpunk with Napoleanic overtones. A lot of Miyazaki movies are somewhat steampunk as well- Castle in the Sky, for example, though of course with a heavily Japanese aesthetic, as opposed to the more Western Europe-centered theme we think of as Steampunk.

There's more offerings in Manga and graphic novels as well as webcomics and web serials and dead-tree format stuff. The comic Steampunk is one of the originals- there's Steampunk themed Transformers comics, Girl Genius is THE Quintessential steampunk webcomic- The Flying Cloud is a great steampunk/lovecrafian webnovel- Clockworks, the Amazing Screw On Head, Moorlock Nights... Tons of stuff out there, but very little that's all in the same genre or the same universe.

GENERATION 8: The first time you see this, copy and paste it into your sig and add 1 to the number after generation. Consider it a social experiment.

Thanks for the input, I think I'll go check out Last Exile. I've watched Turn A before though, so I'll leave that off for now. The ending is kinda bittersweet, and I'd rather not get depressed right now.

Eh, I don't think anyone ever saw that happening, but I don't believe for one second this was his true end. Maybe I'm wrong, but that's my feeling.

After reading the discussion in reddit and MAL I realize I'm a very small minority: I absolutely love Nui. She's the master-troll of the show, she trolls with a smile, she destroyed our MC, she's dangerous enough to make Satsuki enter serious mode, good heavens, I honestly hope she plays an even bigger role in the future.

Maybe she'll be the "final boss" instead of the Dragon, maybe not, but I honestly hope she stays until near the end. The ammount of twists she created so far have been delicious.

I thought the stuff on crunchyroll was censored. I've just gotten back from holiday so I spent last night watching 8 or so first episodes. Space dandy was the most disappointing. Lots of critics don't seem to like magical warfare but I found it ok. Their seems to be relative gender balance so far which is good if your not super into that kinda thing like me and the guy already has a gf so I don't know how he would get away with other girls jumping on him.

Unfortunately, it only took me 2 plane trips to fully watch Girls und Panzer. This was one very fun anime and I dearly wished there was a S2. The girls were cute and funny, the tank's battles and animation were great, and this scene, oh this glorious scene, I shed a tear because of how beautiful this was :')

That formation, that scenario, that song, those russian tanks, that "hammer and sickle" it's... perfect.

Indeed, shame that the DVD release couldn't get the rights for the song.

The OST has a full version though, which is pretty sweet (The soundtrack in general is pretty good, imo.)

Hi guys, anime newbie here. I've recently started watching anime, and it's a great way to spend a lazy Sunday evening. So far, my friends have let me borrow their Mobile Suit Gundam and Ghost in the Shell series. I've also watched Full Metal Panic.

Of course, now I'm hooked. I'm thinking the next series I'm going to watch is Cowboy Bebop, but after that I'm sort of stuck. I really prefer sci-fi anime. Does anyone have any good recommendations. I'm not too interested in getting into the super long series like Naruto or One Piece. Basically, I want to wade through the classics of the sci-fi anime genre.

Thoughts?

Basically some humans find an ancient super weapon, fight off alien attacks, and other than that I'll simply point out that the series was made by 'Kill em All' Tomino (same guy who made Mobile Suit Gundam). It is a classic of the mecha genre (an early spiritual ancestor to the later Neon Genesis Evangelion). If you want the classics you need to see Ideon.

There's also of course Macross/Robotech, and Space Battleship Yamato which recently got an OVA remake. Other good options are Neon Genesis Evangelion and Patlabor. All classics.

Good series to watch are in Sci-Fi (a lot of Japanese scifi will blend with other genres);
-Psycho-Pass
-Code Geass
-Tenchi Muyo!
-Nausica of the Valley of the Wind (film)
-Full Metal Panic
-Big O
-Eureka Seven

You also might like Fullmetal Alchemist, not scifi really, but its a series I think most Americans can enjoy.

Outlaw Star and Cowboy Bebop are some of the legend grade of the Sci Fi end of anime. If you like a little comedy with your sci-fi/fantasy then Tenchi Muyo's always a good watch.

Outlaw Star: A wild crew of characters sets out into the Galaxy to find enough money to make ends meet while searching for a legendary treasure. In the mean time they're going to have to deal with pirates, bounty hunters and everything else the universe can throw at them.

Cowboy Bepop: You're already planning to watch it. Just do it.

Mobile Suit Gundam: 8th MS Team, Gundam gone hardcore, except for the giant robots it has slightly less scifi elements then the other Gundam series, but it makes up for it with bad ass giant robot action and a compelling plot.

Neon Genesis Evangelion: Buckle in and hold on to your butt because this is it, the defining anime classic of mindfethery.

Planetes: More working class Sci-Fi this near future space story focuses on a crew of LEO garbagemen working for one of the large space based corporations in the near future.

Appleseed: It's a movie and it's very much in the vein of Ghost In the Shell.

Psycho Pass: Think Minority Report's concept with a side order of Cyber Punk, Ghost In the Shell and Dexter. It's a bit more complex then that of course, but the show's phenomenal and one of my recent faves.

Bodacious Space Pirates: Back to the cute and comedy, with almost no fanservice at all (seriously, I was shocked) Bodacious Space Pirates follows a high school girl who finds out that on the death of the last captain, her absentee father, she's inherited command of a crew of space pirates.

Flag: Back down to Earth where a U.N. special forces unit has deployed to a destabilized nation undergoing a religiously motivated military insurrection, this powerful anime is told mostly through the camera lens of an embedded photographer. It's extremely compelling and tackles some serious issues head on. Bring a cup of coffee, a sounding board and some tissues.

and finally,

Macross Frontier: The latest in the venerable Macross series Macross Frontier follows an elite team of mercenary pilots as they head across the galaxy with one of humanity's colonization fleets. Giant robots, solid plot, compelling characters, cute girls, and a sound track you really cannot download fast enough.

Meanwhile on a completely different note, the JSDF has figured out how to weaponize Moe.
