Never played. Only saw it once, the LGS got a copy and then GW didn't go ahead with the release or something. IIRC, the rules were just like Warmaster, which is a pretty fun little game.
As to worth getting- depends on the price, obviously.
I just went to the GW website and I see that Bo5A is listed for less than $85 US. For what you get in the box, I think it's a good deal. You'd be lucky to get a single Warmaster army from specialist games for that price, while with Bo5A, you get both sides; don't have to wait on your buddy to buy into the game. And hey, you get one of their big hills to use in any game you want.

it latches on to the first idea to come along, good or bad; and it takes strenuous effort with a crowbar to make it let go.

Had to jump in here. This is a great game. Lots of bits and a great value overall. The hills that come with it are sold separately for $25 - see the "Citadel Modular Gaming Hill" on the GW website.
I expect that it won't be sold for too much longer with the movie coming out soon, at least at the current price. If you are thinking about it, I highly recommend it for the book alone. Not too complicated, but simple and fun with rules for wizards, magic items, etc.
Shoot, I'm thinking of picking up a few just to have to resell, in case they stop selling it for some reason. Or I just have more units. Either way I win.

I beleive all the models are plastic, a big win at this scale as the castings are nice and crisp compared to metal. As far as I know they are 10mm although GW spent a time trying to pass them of as being 6mm :O
As for the rules of Warmaster it is I Go-You go system. You can use your commanders to issue orders to your troops, with command reatings, distances, affecting the dice score needed to issue the order in question. Commanders add dice to a combat but they are not an overly powerful force, thouh judging by the size of Beorn on the website he may have a bit more punch then most
Try it is all I can say, its only £51.25!!! About the only price that makes sense on their website these days :(

Bilbo was out for most of the Battle, so I don't think he'll be running around shanking anyone with Sting.
Something to note: Since the models are 10mm, I don't think it'd be too hard to add to them by using Pendraken 10mm fantasy figs.

It runs off the Warmaster engine, so download and skim through those rules first. The game is pretty weird in terms of GW games (you move based off of Leadership rolls, for instance) but if you're like me and enjoy the degree of command and control the system gives you then by all means jump right in!

"I have concluded through careful empirical analysis and much thought that somebody is looking out for me, keeping track of what I think about things, forgiving me when I do less than I ought, giving me strength to shoot for more than I think I am capable of. I believe they know everything that I do and think, and they still love me. And I’ve concluded, after careful consideration, that this person keeping score is me." -Adam Savage |

So I should have taken my own advise and bought some for resale. Price is now $200 on Ebay, now that it is no longer being sold.

I kick myself for not picking up a second box I saw last year at a store for like $70.00. I painted up my first set and you're welcome to check out the miniatures at my site:

Its warmaster reskinned to represent the batle of five armies in the hobbit. Its good fun but not much range for expansion. You can buy additional units fairly easily on ebay but often for quite a lot of money. I however have noone to play it with anymore. So if anyone is interested in buying some more scenery, stands of troops from the box or the rule book. please inbox me id gladly sell them to you for a none rediculous price. Automatically Appended Next Post: It was a really fun game though.
