Hi all,

Long time, no post. A couple reasons.
1. I was starting to get worried I wouldn't finish the army in time for the Colonial GT. I enjoy posting WiPs and getting feedback, which improves the look of the army, but it does take time. Time which I felt I needed in order to finish.
2. There really wasn't anything new to offer. The remaining models pretty much look the same as the ones already posted.

Now that the army is complete I feel a bit better about posting some photos. So, here we go.

The display board took a bit longer than expected. The river portions started as layers of PVA glue. After a couple of weeks the glue went from clear to translucent white-ish. I ened up painting the glue and adding a layer of Vallejo water effects. Th effects came out glossy, so I covered it with satin varnish.

I decided to paint the drones I had made for Tyning. I probably will only use them as objective markers though.

For the 2013 Colonial GT I've made a small handout to give to each opponent. When I first started attending GTs about ten - twelve years ago most people handed you more than just a basic army list. At the events I now attend that tradition is long gone. It would be nice to see it make a comeback, but I'm not holding my breath
The handout includes a cover sheet, fluff, army list, mission.

I set out a few pages to display with the army.

The army is now ready to take on the Colonial GT! It was a fun event last year and should be even better this year.

Thanks to those who followed this adventure and special thanks to inmygravenimage for his practical and effective suggestions which greatly improved this army.

I don't know what project next, but I will be taking a couple of weeks off

Thanks and take care

Well I love your cheese portfolio, it's most impressive. The cheeseboard is likewise great, and I feel like I could see some chaotic chutney monsters crawling from it.

In seriousness, you have a gift for bright colours. I would really like to see your take on something Xenos. And thanks for the shout out btw.

Xenos will have to wait. I have a very long list before I go back to them ... unless the Tau Codex is interesting. And thanks for the excellent advice

So the Colonial GT is over. It was a fun event. The army did okay the first day, but I ran into a Guard army and drop pod army that I just couldn't handle. I did win best appearance so that was pretty sweet.

Appearance Trophy

Appearance Trophy in front of the Army case.

I thought about moving on to another project but as I was looking at my closet of toy soldiers I decided to add a few units of IG veterans. With ally rules I can make a army which acts as Inducted units.

First up is a Primaris Pskyer. He is a wizard from a boxed set of eight or so from many years ago.

I know some people don't care for characters standing on higher terrain. I understand their view, but I find it easier to find them in in a group.

My version of Guardsman Marbo with his Sniper Pistol.

His demo charge and replacement arm.

I hope to have these guys done by Mechanicon in early November.

Early November?! That's the spirit - none of those pesky short-term goals, noooo I jest, if/when I have goal dates I'm always better! Grats on the trophy, a vindication of your hard work over the naysayers.

Hi all,

I put together a strike squad which allows for a couple of options when playing games under 1850 points. The squad can either be used as a five or six man unit with a psycannon and a demonhammer.

I am also using this squad as a test for which paint scheme to use for the Inducted guard.

In addition to receiving a trophy for Best appearance at the Colonial GT I also received a $25 gift certificate to Secret Weapons Miniatures and Reaper Master Series Paints Box Set #3. I ordered seven washes and a Raphael #0 brush from Secret Weapon.

I've read good things about Raphael brushes and wanted to try one for myself. I've been using Winsor and Newton Series 7 brushes for the last four or five years and love them. So far I like Raphael's, but do not see a difference from Series 7s. Obviously I cannot comment on Raphael durability. The only difference I've noticed is Raphael handles are thinner. A couple of years ago this wouldn't have been a big deal, but now I appreciate the control and comfort of the thicker handled brush.

The following is a key regarding paint:
CB = Citadel Base
CD = Citadel Dry
CF = Citadel Foundation
CL = Citadel Layer
LBW = LBursleys' Wash recipe
MSP = Reaper Master Series Paint
SWW = Secret Weapon Wash
VGC = Vallejo Game Color
VGE = Vallejo Game Extra Opaque
VGI = Vallejo Game Ink
VMC = Vallejo Model Color

Also, all lists of paints used are put in order from basecoat to final.

First up are bases.

The bases start exactly the same as the KFC, but because the models will be darker than the Paladins I wanted to brighten up the bases a bit in order to add some contrast. After the first layer of white things change.
Rocks:
LBW - Gold
VGC - White
SWW - Amethyst
Ground:
LBW - Dark Yellow
CD - Underhive Ash
Lip:
VGE - Heavy Gray
LBW - Concrete
Once the model is painted / attached I will use some weathering powders to ad a bit more depth and texture.

I want to make the Grey Knights very dark, but almost not quite black
VMC - Black Gray
MSP - Shadowed Stone
MSP - Stone Gray
MSP - Weathered Stone
MSP - Leather White
SWW - Storm Cloud

I really like the effect of Storm Cloud wash. It gives the model just a hint of blue while smoothing the transitions between shades.

The other colors use the same process as KFC.

I haven't decided what way to go with the stormbolter. Any suggestions?

I may change the bolts to black. The picture doesn't do the orange justice. The shading and highlights are much more noticeable in real life.

Force Weapon Tests

I found some old Vallejo paints and one them was Gunmetal Blue. It's basically a very dark-blue metallic. So I used that and added pearl white a couple of times.
I tried four washes: VW - blue, SWW - black blue, SWW - Storm cloud, MSP - Clear Blue.
I like the effect of storm cloud (it;s the top picture, bottom or left side of sword). It keeps the highlights, but dulls the brightness of white.

That is all for now.

Thanks and take care

Actual grey on your grey knights? For shame! Looking good although not sure about the pink "ears". I would go for a very bright, strong colour on the stormbolter. Classic pink, or perhaps a nice strong yellow (storm of cheese!)

Thanks. I was looking for spots to put some color without being to "big". The ears fit and I think the bolter would be too much color. I was up very late last night working on the test model.

I am pleased with results so far.
The right wrist is magnetized to allow for a demonhammer or force sword.

Looks like it needs a bit of touch up

I like the force sword. The demonhammer head ... not so much. Time for plan F.

I used Vallejo brush-on satin varnish for the first time with the Knights of the Flaming Cheddar and will be using Vallejo spray sating varnish for these fellas. I am looking forward to seeing the results. I am thinking of using a burnt or aris static grass as well.

Thanks and take care

The NDH could work as just a big lump o cheese? Storm bolters look good.

I like that idea. I'l switch the rope to pink. I wanted to stay away from big sections of color, but that idea is funny (and good). Nothing like getting smote by a huge wedge/ball of cheese. i"m pretty sure I've read about that happening in Ankh-Morpork.

Hi all,

The other day my boys (2 and 4 1/2) wanted to paint some of their own toy soldiers. I broke out some old brushes and paints and let have some fun. They had a tendency to paint like they were using watercolors, so their paints acted more like ashes than paint.

I've been reading about pigments and their applications. I decided to try a few. I have a few pigments from MIG, Vallejo, and Secret Weapon. As far as I can tell the main difference are the bottles. I likked using them and will continue to do more with pigments in the future.

Work on the test model is complete! Overall, I'm very happy with the results. Switching the demonhammer to yellow made a big difference (thanks Graven). I used Vallejo spray satin varnish. It came out a bit more shiny than the brush on version. I may have applied to much to quickly. I will try thinner layers next time. If it stills has the same finish I will go back to brush on.

Also, kids and toy soldiers: always a giggle. Drybrushing is a great method to teach kids, as well as saving you time in the long run!

Hi all,

A couple more Knights are complete.

First up, Strike Squad Grey Knight #1:

Strike Squad Grey Knight #2 with Halberd:

Strike Squad Grey Knight #2 with Force Sword:

Strike Squad as of April 13:

I adjusted the technique for using spray satin varnish. They aren't as shiny as the test model and not as shiny as the photos suggest, but I may go over them with brush-on varnish.

I do love that honking great hammer of cheese. The only thing (now) is I would give it a wash to differentiate it from the cheese strings that seem to be peeling off it.
Also, I find it very weird to see you painting an almost "normal" army

I may try an orange wash on the hammer.
"Normal" army? Yeah, this is about as close as I get

Hi all,

Thank you!

So, after reading the Grey Knight codex a bit more I discovered a person can take a Ordo Malleus Inquisitor with terminator armour, psycannon, and Prescience. And I thought, why not? If four psycannons in one squad are good than five would be even better

So was born Inquisitor Worden. I used an old Rune Priest model. He is significantly smaller than modern termies so I thought it would make a good human in terminator armor.

I filed of many "wolfie" totems and such, so hopefully it won't be too obvious.

Switching to an Inquisitor from a Librarian freed up a few points. I haven't seen to many GK Techmarines about and the idea of using a conversion beamer seems like fun and it gives the army one piece of wargear able to shoot over 36". Yeah!

The Tau influence is fairly heavy, but I figure it would make sense for Malleus to use equipment of a race which is highly resilient to Chaos

The latest additions together.

The builds are looking great! Yeah, malleus with psycannons, why the devil not? And GK techies with C-beamers make a lot of sense, it's one of the only ways to get some serious long-range punch outwith allies.
Spoiler:

One question, what's that nemesis sword bottom left for?

Thanks!

D'oh! I should have said "I don't recall" seeing many GK techmarines. Nice looking marine, btw!

The sword is actually a power weapon for Techmarine Harzer. I'll paint it a wee bit differently in order to minimize confusion.
