Do any of you play a made up chapter of your own imagination?
I for instance have never painted a model in a pre-set paint scheme (except my goff orks)
for example,
BLOOD GUARD, 2nd founding, primogenitor (BLOOD ANGELS), home planet (EXODUS)
(EXECUTE TRAITORIS)
A renegade chapter of the blood angels heritage, the blood guard excell at seige defence, are suprisingly immune to the flaw and despite their chaotic intentions, still follow the codex astartes. they were origianaly employed as terra's confidentional defenders, were caught during a dlood ritual for khorne and fled to their original home planet, to find it days away from an invasion from hive fleet HELIOS. (another design of mine)
They only just repeled the invasion due to a sponteaneous warp storm that wiped out the 7th company along with the hive fleet. Cut off from the hive mind, the sorcerceror/librarians of the chapter enslaved the billions of tyranids abandoned on the planet by using their psychic powers as a substitute for the hive mind, the chapter, now at less then half strength still stronger then ever (thanks to the billions of tyranids under its control) and yet still rebuilding its chapter and fortifying the fortress monastary into the most stalwart fortress in the materium.
They have no connection with deamons other than khorne himself and have enslaved a forge world and are even now repelkng a relentless assault from a desperate imperium, needing the forge world for its own purpouses. (with no success)

I kind of want to support this thread because I'd like to see what people have come up with. That said, I feel that I ought to contribute what I'VE done. This was a project that I took up around the time I started wargaming and it lasted me....er...I'm going to say three years or so. In which time I wrote around 300 pages of stories about my chapter (on one of my old computers) but I eventually got bored, perhaps I'll take them up again, I don't know. Looking back I think I added too many details, if that makes sense. I'll write a bit out here, maybe somebody'll read it, like I said, "supporting the thread".
The chapter was called the "Gore Hunters", Imperial Record listed them as a Blood Angels successor (which was the ruleset I used for them since the PDF, though I did consider Space Wolves, but with the whole Geneseed thing it just wouldn't...fit) but in actuality they were created from the World Eaters/ Iron Warriors geneseed I never could pick, I liked them both so much (Starting to see the whole "too many details" thing?). Eventually the chapter underwent a schism, half stayed loyalist, and the other fell to Chaos. Nurgle more specifically. The other half were only allowed to survive after an inveestigation from the Inquisition and were reformed into the "Neo Gore Hunters". They were used as a dedicated Anti-Xenos force under the personal command of an Ordos Xenos inquisitor. They were oft criticized for becoming lapdogs but the critics were always silenced, none of the brothers minded though because they were given free reign to hunt down their traitorous former brothers.
The Gore Hunters were a Codex Chapter, very strict to the rules. Though they did have a "Death Company", it was populated entirely by the battle-brothers who discovered the Chapter's "secret" origins. I say "secret" because it was sort of dangled for them, they needed to keep numbers up and all. For appearance's sake. They did have one very noticable mutation though, they had glowing ice-blue eyes. They had no apparent "normal eye bits" just sockets that glowed blue, but functioned perfectly normally except for only seeing in shades of blue. They all had to take special training to learn to reidentify which shades represented what, and their helmet lenses compensated somewhat. For their troubles they did have much improved night vision. They did have a "berserker" reactionn whenever they saw a large quantity of something that was actually blue though, so the fortress monastery contained none of it. They often flat out refused to work with Ultramarines and Crimson Fists and the like, but made it a point not to question their honour. I remember a story of a time when an Ultramarine vessel was forced to dock to refuel and was almost attacked by battle-brothers on the ground when their leader made to converse with the then Chapter Master. (They made do by only having them approached by chapter serfs and blindfolding any brothers that needed to be around them at all).
For the stories I wrote they revolved around three main battle brothers, although there were others. (Librarians, Techmarines, etc.) The "protagonist" was brother Tobias Syrell who hailed from a very remote planet from the rest of the chapter. The planet was constantly afflicted by warp-energies but because of bureaucratic backlogging it was never investigated, though by all rights should have been subjected to one if not exterminatus-ed. As I said the planet was extremely remote and Guard recruitment ships only came around once every fifty years or so. Syrell's parents were both in the Guard and both died, leaving him with his aging grandmother. The timing of his birth was poor in that he was barely walking when the recruitment ship made rounds. After his grandmother's death at age fifteen he sold off all but the most essential possessions and used the money to purchase a ticket on a chartered pilrimage ship intending to abandon it on a planet from which he could enlist. The pilgrimage was going well until they were attacked by Dark Eldar pirates and shot down, Tobias fought back tooth and nail but was captured and was about to be taken away if not for the intervention of passing forces of the Gore Hunters. Upon the defeat of the pirates the commander of the group of marines, the then captain of the third company, deigned him a worthy recruit and he was brought to their fortress monastery. Over the next few years he progressed through his career as a marine with distinction being placed under the tutelage of new Sergeant Vykral Melkior, and designated "X" (10).
The second main brother was, as you would expect, Vykral Melkior. Starting as a new Tactical Sergeant, but over the course of the story (300 years worth) becoming Captain of the 3rd company, then Chapter Master and finally interred in a Dreadnought before his eventual death. He was a kind and wise leader, though stern and skilled nonetheless. He took a special interest in his two proteges Syrell and (VI) Halvek Gigamantes. (Just to be clear. in the Gore Hunters individual squad members are referred to by their numbered designations within the squad.)
The third main protagonist is brother Halvek Gigamantes. He is a brash, aggressive and hardheaded marine. He was the "act before thinking type", I distinctly remember a part of one story where as a scout he and his squad needed to breach a door so Halvek had the bright idea of running straight through enemy Heavy Bolter fire to retrieve a fallen Chaos marine's Multimelta and then trying to open the door with it, and though it worked he was thrown from his feet and severely reprimanded for it.
Over the course of the stories it denotes these three brothers' lives, Syrell from boy to scout to marine to Sternguard to Captain of the 3rd, Halvek on the same path (substituting Vanguard and 5th company), and Vykral from Sergeant to Captain to CM to death. At the time of Vykral's internment the choice of new Chapter Master was obviously between his two proteges, and as was tradition, whoever led the more successful crusade would take the position. As the more intelligent and the better planner Syrell won and was given the position. As were the terms of their bet Halvek surrendered his Captaincy and became Standard Bearer in his Honour Guard.
Over the next few years a (traitorous) inquisitor Leanna McClaren bent the young Chapter Master's ear. She gave him ideas of grandeur and stroked his ego all the while giving him directions that would make him stand out amongst other CMs. To the point where he had a personal audience with both Dante and Calgar at seperate times. Eventually Halvek took notice of her and with the help of his friend (a librarian) determined that she was indeed an agent of Chaos. Though the librarian died in the process, Halvek confronts Tobias as brothers and best friends and demands that she be sent away. However it is too late and her claws are sunken in, her pandering to his massive inferiority complex has blinded him. That and the fact that the taint of Chaos from his home planet never quite left him. Halvek consorts with another close friend of his, Techmarine Lazarus Snow, who he convinces to help him assassinate Syrell (as he knows full well that a direct challenge for leadership would not go over well considering their past and bet). Snow tampers with a Dreadnought to attack Syrell when he is making rounds, he survives but with greivous injuries. He sees through the plot (with Leanna's direction) and orders Snow and Halvek executed, but the pair escape with about half of Halvek's former Vanguard squad.
The group rendezvous with a strike force of Gore Hunters on their way back from an assignment (Unbeknownst to them, furthering Leanna's insideous agenda) before the injured Tobias can contact them. While they are doubtful of the story, to the point of locking the group in the brig, when they are fired upon by Gore Hunter forces even after explicitly stating their intent to return the prisoners, they know that they are telling the truth. Down below a large percentage of the chapter has fallen to Chaos under the machinations of the heretic inquisitor, not to mention several dozen ON the returning battle barge. Full scale civil war breaks out culminating in the death of Leanna, and a climactic battle with now Chaos Lord (Later Daemon Prince) Tobias and Halvek. Due to Tobias' earlier injuries he loses the duel and his remaining forces retreat into the Warp. The Gore Hunters have lost 1/2 of the 1st, 8th and 9th and the entirety of the 2nd, 3rd, and 6th.
Halvek forcibly takes over as Chapter Master (none of the other Captains will challenge him) despite being quite unhinged at this point (accepting the Inquisitor's deal) and that's about where the stories ended. Also, Snow survives but loses his vocal chords which he happily replaces with bionics, causes Halvek great distress in that his voice was a calmative for his old friend for many years. Halvek does not like change and is seen as just as reckless of a Chapter Master as he was a Scout/Marine. When not hunting the traitors he is oft criticized as being under the thumb of the Xenos inquisitor much the same as Tobias was. He distances himself from the chapter and is more of a figurehead than a leader of any sort, though still taking to the battlefield at any opportunity. Taking up the rumoured to be cursed blade of the chapter's first master (the blade Vykral wielded at his time of death).
There you have it, that's a not too succinct summary of the Chapter I created. Hope to see some nice responses, perhaps critiques, perhaps other people's chapters. I'll be happy to read anything.

Yeah, that's my bad I guess. I never seem to do things by halves, that's why I always have way more projects than money I guess. More video games than hard drive space, more books than shelves etc. I just started typing and it went from the size you were looking for to...that.

A interesting read and tread.
Chapter History Of The Death Hands.
Incoming Voxnet transmission :
Receiving code...... 009667_QR21W
Authorization granted
Inquisitorial ID : 0076RRT1_ t800
In this paper the reader will find the required information about the Astartes chapter in question. All Inquisitorial agents are advised to show a certain level of caution when dealing with this chapter.
The founding and early years.
Some two millennia ago it was declared that the Iron Hands chapter would assist, in creating a successor chapter. This chapter was granted the right of possession of a section of Imperial space few others wanted, they received gene seed and other vital equipment from both their brothers and from the high lords of Terra.
The reason for the creation of this later infamous chapter has been lost to time, but it is believed by the author of this paper that they where created to keep the inhabitants of the Ghoul Stars to spill into Imperial space.
The fledgling chapter was granted a feudal world as their home world, this sparsely populated world was named Hades, on its windswept surface they built their fortress monastery with was named Medusel, over the next centuries the Death Hands acquired more worlds, and soon had established themselves firmly as the lords of the system.
They also gained the friendship of the Adeptus Mechanicus forge world of Hellheim, and extended their protection to the system witch that world lay in. this would prove important for the chapter over the next centuries, as they now had access to new weapons and vehicles as the need arose.
Notable Chapter members.
Reich Marshal Astor Hammersmith.
He is the current chapter lord, although he is reduced to a shell of his former self, mortally wounded and crippled beyond help by the wretched forces of Chaos he now rests in a Dreadnought, awaiting the day he will finally die on the field of battle. He took the rank as chapter lord some seven centuries ago and thus making him the Death Hand who has held it longest.
He early on showed a great talent for the tactics the chapter employs, although he never backed down from the chance to assault the enemy directly. This however would prove his undoing when during the battle for the hive city of Gomorrah on Praxia IV him and his fellow brothers was ambushed by a mixed force of traitor guardsmen and Black Legionaries, he fell after a brutal battle with left the assault force in bloody ruin and their foe crippled. It was then decided to place e him in a Dreadnought to prolong his service to the Emperor and the chapter.
Brother Captain Arkangle
This particular individual has been detailed in another related document, I reefer to it for ore information.
Master Apothecary Grimboll Swansong.
This individual is rarely seen outside the great fortress he calls home, but when he is carnage always follows in his wake. He is the grim and bloody reaper of the fallen and the one who makes sure any initiates that survives the horrid trials to become a member of the 10th company is gifted with the gene seed he is entitled to. He is also the caretaker of the entombed chapter master, alongside the honoured Tech marines he eases his lord in his ongoing torment.
He is clad in a age worn suit of war plate witch has been his since the five centuries ago he was accepted into the ranks as a battle brother. The only modifications has been a coat of white paint and some minor modifications to the suits layout.
When he takes to the field of batlle he is armed with a power axe that was forged on Mars and granted to the chapter after its aid in recovering vital STC components, he also is renowned for his skill with said weapon.
It is also important to mention that he is also extensively augmented with bionics and similar enhancements that are due to grievous wounds earned over the centuries in the service of Mankind.

Recent campaigns undertaken by the Death Hands
The War for Praxia IV
This campaign proved to be a heavy toll for the Death Hands, they lost a substantial part of the Second Company and a Revered old one, the war was ignited by heretical uprisings backed by traitor guardsmen and Black Legion forces. The main Imperial forces was made up of Ragnarokian regiments alongside two Deathkorps Of Krieg regiments.
But what really turned this war into a quagmire was the loss of their Chapter Master, when he fell this marked a change in the attitude of the remaing Death Hands. No longer could Guardsmen feel safe if they failed they duties, tension rose between said forces until Segmentum command stepped in and replaced the Lord General leading the war effort for the guard.
This was a nightmarish campaign for any mortal man serving in it, Praxia IV proved to be a extremely hard nut to crack even with the support of The Death Hands. In the end the world was reclaimed but at a horrid cost, seven Ragnarokian regiments was lost alongside over hundred Astartes.
The campaign was deemed a failure and the Second Company was withdrawn from active service to rebuild and learn from their mistakes.
The purging of Centurion Prime.
This campaign revealed the cold and emotionless Death Hands for what they truly where. It soon became clear that none who opposed them, be them loyalist or traitor could count on surviving their retribution. After their recent defeat at Praxia IV the chapter saw a need to redeem themselves in the blood of their foes. They also entered this campaign to finally get their long overdue vengeance on a old nemesis.
It is estimated that two full companies was deployed to Centurion Prime, although these mainly worked alone and rarely interacted with other Imperial forces, the most common sign of their involvement was the distant bark of bolt weapons, and heaps of dead foes.
Part II.
The Pragsian blood plague.
For the observant reader it will be noted that the reason for the founding of the Death Hands, was not mentioned in the earlier section.
This will now be addressed.
Some two millenniums ago the Emperium of Man was beset by a horrid new foe, from the Ghoul Stars a horrid disease spread death and disorder. This came to be known as the Pragsian blood plague after the Magos who first identified it, this particular virus was unsealed onto the Imperium Of Man by Xeno forces working from within the Ghoul Stars. It was long unclear whom these aliens where but it was after some time discovered that it was indeed the horrid race known as the Slaugth who had unleashed it.
This horrid race and its foul minions was driven back with heavy casualties by a combined force of Iron Hands and the first battle brothers of the Death Hands, the two chapters alongside members of the Ordo Xeno and Ordo Malleus fought against inhumane horrors, and whole worlds burned as the disease ran rampant true the systems it reached.
It was only when a Inquisitor who’s name has been lost to the mist of time discovered their true form that the Imperial forces was able to bring might to bear upon the creators of this truly daemon spawned disease.
The events that led up to the final battle are not known to anyone except the highest lords of the above mentioned chapters, but the battle must have been the stuff of legends. This event earned the Death Hands much Inquisitorial goodwill and the backing of both Orders for the millenniums to come, they maintain strong ties to both to this day.
This can also explain the lack of interest in their brutal tactics and methods of operation, because those who know them dare not consider the consequences of another blood plague.
It has been speculated that the Eldar of the Craft world Ygdrasil had a role to play in these events also. However this lead was never fully investigated due to the nature of the situation.
Part III.
Notable foes and Chapter related incidents.
This part will list some of the events that shaped the Death Hands, and will also contain a list of notable foes of the chapter. These files where submitted to the archives by the Inquisitor Kimberley who vanished in the Ghoul Star traverse seventy years ago, therefore they may be slightly inaccurate.
Arch Heretek Tyriel.
This fallen Astartes have been the nemesis of the Death hands for centuries, he is one of the few Death Hands witch has turned to the dark gods. He was long expected to be next commander of the first company, but few could have expected the treachery he would unleash, it was remarked by a Chaplain of the chapter that he possessed a remarkable tendency to acts of perversion, his most notable sin on this matter was the pleasure he took from torture, and watching those he considered worthless to the chapter. The even that made this once promising Astartes to turn away from the light of the Emperor was the day he was surpassed for promotion by an another member of the first company.
Gripped by jealousness and rage, he drew his sword and struck down his brothers that where with him aboard the ship. His howls of rage and the cries of his brothers filled the dark corridors of the Strike cruiser, after disposing of those who could resist him he forced the surviving chapter serfs to set a course for the one place he could hide. The place he fled to was the lost world of Demntium, there he found refuge amongst the heretics and fellow Traitor Astartes dwelling on its tainted surface. The ship he had escaped upon was given to the lord of the world as a token of submission.
He quickly rose in the ranks of his new found brotherhood. After this he began his long lasting personal crusade against his former brothers, he has sworn he will find a way to see them all burn and the systems he once aided in the defence of fall to his wrath. He is now a mockery of his former self, twisted by the dark gifts from the dark prince of pleasure he wages a merciless war against all imperial citizen.
The Xeno race known as Slaugth.
These are the foes witch the Chapter and all those who serve in it despises the most, this race of maggot men and deranged henchmen constantly plots and schemes against those who stands in defence of Mankind.
Against these foes normal means of warfare are ill suited, they hide behind countless minions and devilish organized covert operations.
(Note on Slaugth : These particular xenos are fearsome opponents, it is recommended that power weapons and plasma weapons are employed if one are to have a chance at vanquishing these hell spawn.)
The chapter has for considerable time been working with the Ordo Xeno to find a way to strike at their leaders, but it seems no such things exists in this race, and that each individual works for its own personal gains. This has also lead the Death Hands to lend a sizeable strike force to the mentioned Inquisitorial order in the Calexisis sector, where there seems to be a gathering of these foes.
This also lead to increased conflicts with the Amarthian Syndicate that strongly oppose all Imperial authorises.

Chapter Name: Spectral Swords
Progenitor: There is an argument over the progenitor chapter. Recent discoveries show that a mixed gene seed with extracts from the white scars, imperial fists, and dark hunters.
Specialties : urban warfare, long range combat, defensive operations.
differentiation from codex astartes: 4 sternguard squads per company, newly recruited chapter members do not serve as scouts, but rather become part of 2 unique companies for the purpose of holding objectives, short range infiltration, and manning of defensible areas until more heavily armored brethren can relieve them. Great heroes of the chapter wear full suits of mk6 corvus armor, while acts of valour are rewarded with individual pieces of corvus armor.
Gene seed deficiencies: Very stubborn, not much faith in allies, pain reception extremely reduced.
Fall of Chapter: 60% of chapter defects to tau empire after abandonment by imperial forces.
Current status: 3 surviving loyalist companies launching attacks on their occupied home sector with aid from genesis chapter, 28th Elysian drop regiment, 67th valhallan regiment, Dark phoenix chapter, and Guards of Brittannica chapter.
Likelihood of Chaos corruption: 27%, Squads of the 3rd company have been known to repair their armor with traitor marine armor after thorough techno-exorcism.

Chapter: MoonGuard
Primogenitor: Unknown, it is assumed the MoonGuard geneseed was a 'prototype seed.
Location: Lost, presumed in the Warp
Loyalist surviving: Unknown
Specialties: Point defense, infiltration, Close Combat
Deficiencies in gene-seed:.Moonguard marines have no extra organs, no second heart, and do not gain any superhuman power. It is believed their geneseed was drawn from regular human beings. Extrordinary human beings, but still, regular humans. As such MoonGuard Marines are considered normal human beings.
Allies: All of Mankind
Sworn enemies: The Chaos lords
Quick summary:
Every great achievment of mankind knows failures. For the emperor, even the birthing of his children knew failures. Before the founding of the first marine chapters, now known as the original chapters, several experiments had been conducted to create superhuman warriors.
At that time the loyal forces of The Imperial Guard were humanities backbone. To counter the emperor's dabbling in what some considered darker magicks, several high ranking advisors and consultants created a regiment of the strongest, fastest, smartest guardsmen available. Some pilitical backstabbing, back room politics, bribery and subterfuge allowed them to aqcuire the first designs for Power Armour, and quickly underground factories were built on the moon to create these.
Thus the Moon Guard was born. Regular human beings, but with superhuman equipment. Even before the birth of the first True Space Marine, power armoured men stood vigil over mankind.
Unfortunately, when the emperor discovered this, he immediately ordered the deaths of these traitors, and all their data seized and deleted. What he could use, he utilized in the creation of his finest. All other information was destroyed.
At that darkest day in Moon Guard history, only 1 company survived. Moon Guard's 7th company had been dispatched to counter Eldar incursions near the galactic east, and as such escaped capture and destruction.
That 1 company disappeared, from known space, and from history.
Only recently, they have returned, smithing Xenos at places usually considered too small scale for the Emperor's finest to bother with. The inquisition is divided at the moment whether the MoonGuard should be welcomed back and accepted, or be exterminated.

Sinister Shapeshifter
The Lair of Vengeance....Poole.
|
Chapter Name: Blood Wolves of Fenris Progenitor Chapter: Take a guess Current Status: Renegade (Technically) They utilise standard space wolf methods and equipment. The flaws in their geneseed is apparent upon visual contact. They have mutated to be bestial. The one common theme of the mutations is beasts. However the size and variation of the mutation varies. Some form giant werewolves whereas some are barely even beast-men. The more severe the mutation, the more it affects their minds. There are some whose minds are not afflicted by the mutations and they generally form the chapters commanders.

History:
The Wanderers Chapter have been under Strength for at least 2000 years. As their planet was destroyed in a war against the Necrons awoke underneath its surface. The Wanderers sent 720 Battle Brothers to fight the Necrons driving them into the very planet itself, activating a Warp drive, using their Entire Fleet as basically giant ticking time bombs as their weaponry had no affect on the Necrons tomb world sent their entire fleet through the planet, taking the planet, Necrons and the remaining The Wanderers with it into the warp.
The Chapter Masterwas not present during this time, as he was overseeing a campaign, having significant loses came across a single ship that possessed the entire storage of their geneseed and the last battle barge of their once great fleet was shattered but still had its priceless cargo. The Chapter Master took it upon himself and the rest of The Wanderers Chapter to rebuild it, and one day ensure the chapter would one day regain its forces.
The Chapter had been highly active in the Ghoul Stars. Its Original Name has been lost to many chapters and on many recordes, but it has taken a new name The Wanderers. But it is clear they are devoted to the Imperium and they have a deep seated hatred of the Necrons and Xenos Creatures. The Chapter also hunted down artifacts. Though the exact reason why is unknown. But what is known is that they use the artifacts which are Dark Age Technology for the Imperium and turn it over to the Ordos or the Mechanicum. Some theroize it is because of the loses they had from their brutal fight against the Necrons on their homeworld of Neckia.

True enough... I failede to mention that Moon Guard marines do have the extra longivity and heightened senses that come with decent seed... In all other respects they are regular humans... On an autopsy table you would not notice any difference between them and very old humans

They aren't really marines then. They're just...really old dudes in power armour.
There are so many excellent ways to create a unique SM chapter; stripping away all the organs and powers that make them marines is not one of them.

that i agree with. You cannot take away what makes them marines. AS much as I like the reference to old mans war. Its just no.

I for one can easily take the critiscism... Because the way I see it, the best way to make a chapter unique is to do what nobody else thinks should be done. In this case, strip away the extra organs... As stated, they have the heightened senses and stuff of every marine... they just aren't THAT superhuman...
To each his opinion ofcourse... Hell, even the emperor himself considered them heretic abominations... not true marines... So it is fitting all those marine players out there that so rigorously follow the empire should think the same...
