(Not sure if should post this in general or army lists...)

So, I finally decided to get into warhammer fantasy, and I will most probably go with dwarfs.
The thing is, I'm not sure what I shoud buy.

Would the Battalion box, a thane/runesmith and an extra artillery unit be a good start? ( I would like to include miners and slayers at some point, as well)

Sort of, off topic--

I really like the models, fluff and overall aesthetics of the dwarfs, but a lot of people on the wargaming forums (dakka, warseer) seem to dislike playing as, and against them.
Are all the current builds/lists really that boring? Cause to be honest, I want both players to have fun...

Thanks.

What I would do is buy two battilion boxes, that gives gives you two blocks of 32 warriors (I always go with two groups of thirty with great weapons), you also get 32 Quarrallers/Thunderers. Quarrallers are much better as they can be rangers and be equipped with great weapons.

Then there are the two warmachines, I'd make one a cannon, and one an organ gun.

After that, purchas a Runelord and a Battle Standard bearer.

Then go from there

Banished, from my own homeland. And now you dare enter my realm?... you are not prepared.

Posted this months back this is my recommendation for starting dwarfs.

Try and get a BFSP dwarf set to go along with your 2 battalions.

You get 32 warriors in each battalion, make 32 as great weapon wielding warriors and convert the other 32 into hammereres see this link:
http://www.bugmansbrewery.com/topic/20562-a-converters-guide-to-plastic-hammerers/
These hammerers also can double as great weapon warriors when you need them to be.

With the Battle for Skull Pass you will also get some shield warriors you can use as filler if you need too buff units up just put them in the back.

You also get 10 thunderers in the BFSP so use the 32 you would get in each battalion to make that 20 then use the other 22 as great weapon quarrellers

In the BFSP set you also get a cannon and a pony cart which you can convert a cannon or organ gun too with the left over bitz in the battalion:
http://www.bugmansbrewery.com/topic/31388-dwarf-cannonorgan-gun-mount/
http://www.bugmansbrewery.com/topic/29204-the-army-of-droum-peak/page__p__297469__fromsearch__1#entry297469 - Scroll down a bit about 60% of the way down and you'll see it.

So for war machines you should have 2 Organ Guns and 2 Cannons

The dragon slayer that comes in the BFSP set is actually pretty good at hanging back with your warmachines and protecting them. Any light cavalry or units that turn up on table edges will get tarpitted 1-2 turns by this guy because of his high WS and T.

The Thane in the BFSP makes a great Runesmith/Runelord as a shield is a cheap investment for a RS/RL, all you really need up to like 1.5k maybe even 2k is the Rune Smith/Lord and a BSB, I really like GWs bsb model but it's special order they don't carry it in stores but it is worth the 1-2 week wait.

You will also get miners in your BFSP set, 8 of them, you can use them as intended or stick them in warriors blocks as filler.

So there you go a solid army...

76 warriors (32 hammerers can double as warriors) or 82 with miners
22 quarrellers-work great as rangers
20 Thunderers-These guys are cool, Organ Guns generally do the job cheaper
2 Organ Guns
2 Cannons
Runesmith/Lord
BSB
Dragon Slayer

Solid start, I highly recommend picking up a Grudge Thrower as well they are the best thing in our army book when runed up. I took down 18 of my buddies blood letters even with the 5+ ward save before he reached my warrior lines, GW warriors and hammerers are the next best thing.

Edit- Don't worry you will get some games but they can be a little overwhelming, things such as being able to take essentially 6 dispel scrolls as runes, if you field max warmachines or a ton of cannons against a heavy monster lists. Lots of viable ways to play one of my favorite is ninja dwarfs here si a good write up on how it works: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/370840.page

Thus, After having thus successively taken each member of the community in its powerful grasp and fashioned him at will, the supreme power then extends its arm over the whole community. It covers the surface of society with a network of small complicated rules, minute and uniform, through which the most original minds and the most energetic characters cannot penetrate, to rise above the crowd. The will of man is not shattered, but softened, bent, and guided; men are seldom forced by it to act, but they are constantly restrained from acting. Such a power does not destroy, but it prevents existence; it does not tyrannize, but it compresses, enervates, extinguishes, and stupefies a people, till each nation is reduced to nothing better than a flock of timid and industrious animals, of which the government is the shepherd

Sorry for the late post.

Thanks for the tips guys. I really appreciate it.
How many points would I get for two battalions + the BFSP set?

I'll mostly be facing WoC, Skaven and Empire. Any tips for playing against them?

The only caveat I would add is to take a good look at the BfSP models before picking them up. I personally dislike them enough that I'd rather pay a little more to not have to use them. But... to each their own. If you like 'em ok, then its a good way to pick some models up for cheap.

On a delicate chain at her throat, she keeps it with her to this day.”

I agree RZ, and I would only grab one if you can find it for like $40 or less, the warriors do not impress but the thunderers and miners are OK, the thane makes a great runesmith/lord since yours should have a shield anyway and can't go wrong with a cannon, only way you are currently going to get a plastic slayer too, though he is not the best looking model that thong is tough to take.

Late, but quick question/s.

How do runes work, more specificly?

And can the runesmith do other things than dispell stuff?

That is because Dwarf players camp in the corner. ALL THE TIME. EVERY GAME.

I am not a dwarf player by my mate is and he kicks my fairly regularly with a unit of 20 or 25 and a hero miners and the anvil. They pop up behind the enemy then the anvil lets them charge that turn.

The slayers, I don't know how effective it is in general but the one time he used them against me it hurt. They were 30 strong, 10 wide with 10 unit champs, the unit champs are a higher ini so if they hit something the same ini as then the enemy has to target specific unit champs instead of the unit. The champs strike back at the same time then when the lower ini guys go they step forward and get full attacks and support.

Oh and ALWAYS add the flaming rune to your cannons, slaughters hydras and other big things with regen and it makes them magical so it will hurt ethereal units and treekin wont get their wards.

Oh, I certainly vote with my dollar, but the problem is that that is not enough. The problem with the 'vote with your dollar' response is that it doesn't take into account why we're not buying the product. I want to enjoy 40k enough to buy back in. It was my introduction to traditional games, and there was a time when I enjoyed it very much. I want to buy 40k, but Gamesworkshop is doing their very best to push me away, and simply not buying their product won't tell them that.

If you ever played Warcraft think Jewelcrafting and Enchanting. Since Dwarfs loathe magic they affix runes to a standard sword, armor talisman, warmachine or what not with runes that bless it with power, you can make some really cool stuff with it, but there are limits, read the dwarf army book. And a Runesmith is primarily there to generate spell dice, but they make great generals in lower point games it is common for you to have a Thane BSB, and a Runesmith general, then as you progress in points maybe a Runelord General and as you get higher then a Dwarf Lord.

Depends on the dwarf general, though it is a common tactic that generally doesn't make your opponent too happy. However dwarfs are viable in many ways and it's tough to beat great weapons warriors and hammerers. I mean I pay 12 pts for my Bestigor as you do with your Hammer, now I get primal fury which is nice but you get stubborn, in most cases I would prefer stubborn.
