It's been a wile since I posted on this forum and, well I thought this was a good time. I normally post on painting but I wanted to share with you a project that I'm working on. You see I have fallen in love with this game Infinity and I feel it needs something and what that something is...unit cards. So I started looking for stat cards and I really didn't find any thing worth it so I started to make my own and, after many designs I came up with this...



These are designed to be printed off on card stock paper and scored down the middle so you can fold and then glue them with what every you want. I'm creating them and releasing 3 to a sheet so you can make three at a time. I decided to start off with one unit then I will have a poll on my blog for the next unit till all units are done and all I will have to do is release the new units as they come out. Excellent. There's always a great demand for unit cards.

May I provide suggestions though?

It's not very printer-friendly. The entire thing is black with colors breaking up the darkness. This essentially requires a trip to Kinko's. The Devil Team's army list printout maintains a great Infinity-aesthetic while still being great for printers.

There is no need to have a 'back' to these unit cards. Debatable, of course.

The weapon profiles have two separate layouts for the same weapon. The Devil Team layout and the Corvus Belli layout are both a horizontal table and easier to read. By keeping the layout constant, you avoid having multiple, redundant instances of headers (burst, ammo, CC, etc).

The "Move" would look great with its own sectioned background.

The objective of a unit stat card is for quick access to pertinent information. The unit's ISC, cost, SWC, Availability, and designation are not relevant once the game begins and shouldn't have such a presence.

It's difficult to focus on the text when everything has a drop-shadow. Drop shadows make obvious pieces of text stand out at the cost of making them fuzzy around the edges especially when the letter borders are already dark.

As it stands, the URL to your blog is the biggest thing on the card next to the unit name. It's nice and appropriate, but distracting.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm not a designer at all just thought that I would give this a try and so far I have had fun. But the feedback so far has not been good and I'm not sure what to do next. The idea was to have every thing on one card and I think I did a good job at that. I admit it still may need a little tweeking so I will see what I can do.

The question has come up...alot of people like the look but they say they would not use it becasue it's not printer friendly. Should I scrap the look and go for a more printer friendly card? Please let me know what you think.

I think they look great! Agree with Abso (and yourself) that they need tweaking, but on the whole...brilliant work.

I wouldnt say the feedback has been bad as such, constructive criticiscm isnt a bad thing...

Depends on what you want them to be used for really...Do you want people to print them out and use them? (assuming yes) then they need to be a bit more printer friendly, as pretty as they are...

"Printer Friendly" is somewhat subjective, but yes, more Printer Friendly would be nice.

I do appreciate your effort to do this though, and they will come in VERY handy during a game - so if you're game to continue, I'll certainty continue to appreciate your efforts AND use them on the table!

Oh yes I'm going to continue...that was never the question I just want to make sure what I do is well received. I have placed this on a few other boards and I get mixed feedback. They all like the idea but want more printer friendly versions. Now I'm ok with that but I'm tying to come to terms what a printer friendly version would look like with what I wanted to do. I was trying to go for more of a Warmachine type card for Infinity but after getting this feedback I understand that it's not printer friendly since it would drain a ton of ink. I'm still going to try and get that look but be more friendly for the printers... meaning that the back ground may now be white but, I'm not sure. Right now as it stands the only way you will be able to get them with out killing your ink it to take them to Kinko's and that was not the idea I wanted them to be quick and easy. I have access to a color lazer printer and never really took into count that others would not have the same access that I have. If I want these to be main stream and I do I need to better plan it out so any feed back would be helpful.

How possible would it be to do 2 versions? One that saves on the ink (when i print at home) and one uber card (when i print at work)

In so much as, if they end up being Printer Not So Friendly - I'll just print them on cardstock while I'm at work!

Right not that is what Im going to do. Im going to make a small adjustment to the main card and then design a printer friendly card. I will then release both at the same time. So thanks for all the inout and I will keep you updated.

Ok here is what I came up with for the printer friendly version. It's not as pretty but it does get the job done. What do you think?

I like but. . . . Its not all that different to the Devil Army program.

How about putting ALL the stats and costs for each varient on a single card?

So for e.g. If i want to take a Zhanshi, i pick up his card and at a glance i have the stats and cost for a hmg guy. Then using the same card i look up the cost and stats for a zhanshi hacker!

Just a thought!

That was the idea. I downloaded the program and liked the look since it was very printer friendly. Someone suggested the look to me but, to be honest to make a Scfi looking card that is printer friendly they will look a little like the Devil Army program. I also wanted to add a picture of the unit on the card but I felt that it would not be PF so I cut that idea.

Can be done...but would take a huge amount of space. Im afraid that it would clutter up the card. But I will look into it. Thanks for the suggestion.

I feel like im almost there with these cards...

Maybe giving the cards an aleph aesthetic (ie lots of white with various shades of purple) would be more printer friendly whilst retaining the high amount of detail from your first set would be a good idea

Thats not a bad idea...maybe even make them like a intel sheet on the unit from ALEPH...intresting...mmmm

I think that second version is absolutely terrific. Saw the first at the top, and like some other people I much prefer a simple version. As well as being easier to print, it is actually far, far easier to read during a game.

Suggestions:
Can you make a template available? One with text boxes or whatever would be great.

For multiple profiles, there could be an easy solution. You have a 4 line box at the bottom of the card. For each unit, have the available weapon choices in that area? Eg multi sniper, hmg etc, with the ranges. That is usually the only difference in the model's stats, and surely any player can remember what weapon they gave the model (it will usually be physically obvious anyway)

Some units have slightly more complex variants, but almost all can be noted just as the infinity army does it. Have the changed special rule in parentheses after the weapon, like Intruders have "Multi Sniper Rifle (X Visor)". Almost all units have variants that can be expressed like that, only the most flexible units would need two cards for the bottom to include all the options.

Thanks for all your support! Right now I'm working on the version you have up top and one more variant. I would have had more released already but I have been real busy with work. I work for a school district and the first few weeks of school are killer. More will be released here very soon following the second template.

While I'm not into cards I do think they look cool.
