I have a quick question concerning the 40k background. Specifically, I have some Dark Angels assembled and unpainted. I'm hoping to turn them into my own Unforgiven chapter. However, their left shoulder pads all have the Dark Angels sword with wings icon.

Would it be unreasonable of me to simply use a different colour scheme while retaining the icon? Are there any successor chapters for any of the first founding chapters that uses the same icon but different colours?

Thanks for the replies.

You can really do anything you want with it. Call them the Blark Blangels. Or the Ark Dangels, or whatever else you want to, paint them up with whatever color scheme you want, and go have fun.

I'm mostly worried about the iconography rather than the colours. I simply want an individualized dark angels successor chapter that doesn't commit any background/lore/fluff-related inconsistencies by keeping the winged sword icon on their shoulders.

That being said, I'm now definitely leaning towards calling them Ark Dangels.

Na, do whatever you want. It wouldn't be much of a surprise for a successor chapter to use similar iconography to the mother chapter. More-so in the case of the DA since they don't really consider themselves as separate in the same way as other successor chapters do. All the grand masters are all part of the inner circle and all work to stop the fallen above all else.

Different armour and icon colour should be enough.* For example Crimson Fists have same symbol as Imperial Fists, they just have different colours.

(* Black armour and red symbol would look awesome.)

I have taken plenty of DA veteran squads and turned them into BA... I like the look of the DA with robes but use them with my BA, and the paint scheme looks great even with the wing and sword on it. But if you wanted to go with a really nice unforgiven look go back to the original DA paint scheme which I believe was all black with a white trim... and maybe a touch of gold would make it stand out nicely...

Well, the Crimson Fists icon is just the Imperial Fists icon colored red. So it could be possible.

I have a (kind of related) query, what colour is cypher's hair? I'm thinking black, but I have no idea...

My Codex Astartes chapter uses the blood drop the Blood Angels use, being a symbol of the Emperor's teardrop, but I paint them white/blue. It makes for easy incorporation of such models as Death Company marines or Space Hulk Terminators.

Totally agree with the general consensus. Imperial Fists and Crimson fists are the best Known chapters that share a symbol, but there are others. Black Consuls and White Consuls, Blood Angels and Angels Encarmine. There is plenty of precedent.

As far as the name, I am partial to "Sons of Pythagoras" (also known as the Dark Angles).

As said before, it is not unreasonable for a successor chapter to have similar heraldry to their founding chapter. Additionally, it is not unreasonable for a founding chapter to gift a successor chapter with wargear after the chapters founding. I'm planning on using that as my excuse after getting the 6E box set, although the models will be painted in my chapters colours, as Dark Angels successors they were gifted with several suits of power and terminator armour upon their creation, and to honour their father chapter they have retained the icons originally built into the armour, although they have changed the colour.

Pretty much this. You could also do some very basic converting just grinding away either the swords or wings and bam, unique iconography.

I quite like names using the word Lion (since Lion'el Johnson is supposedly Caliban for Lion of the Forest or whatever and a lot of people just call him Lion informally). Knights of the Lion, Sons of the Lion, Celestial Lions (which I am 50% sure is a canon chapter probably descended from the Ultramarines).

I would probably paint all Dark Angels with blonde hair if only because I get a really strong Crusader vibe from them. Used to think Lion's name was based off of Richard the Lionheart (was way off).
