What would you want in your Battle Force?

We just got a guy who is interested in starting WH40k. I feel he chose his army in one of the better way. He was looking through the 6th Edition book and looked at Vulkan and basically went “That’s My Army!”
Now he has budget issues so it looks like I will be buying and building a Salamanders Army for “His” use. Basically I have always wanted an excuse to build one. Eventually the plan is he will buy them off me when he can.

Now on to the question that came up: What Battle Force would be a good Choice for starting a Salamander Force?
1] Spaces Marine: 10 man Tactical Squad [Flamer/Missile Launcher], 5 man Space Marine Combat Squad, Space Marine Rhino, 5 man Space Marine Scout Squad and 5 man Space Marine Assault Squad.
2] The Blood Angels: 10 man Tactical Squad [Flamer/Missile Launcher], 5 man Assault Squad, 5 man Death Company Squad and a Rhino.
The Space Wolves: 20 Grey Hunters/Blood Claws, 5 Wolf Scouts and a Drop Pod.

The basically come out the 3-4 squads and a Transport.

I have nothing wrong with this as there will be plenty of Bits and parts I can use for other projects.

The second question is the one I really basically want to know what would you want in a Battle Force for your Army?

For this Salamander Army I think I would like to see is:
10 man Tactical Squad [Flamer/Multi-Melta]
5 man Scout Squad
5 man Terminator Squad [Heavy Flamer or Assault Terminators with Thunder Hammer/Storm Shield]
Dreadnaught with Multi-Melta/DCCW Heavy Flamer

Can I suggest the upcoming 6th Edition Starter Set ?
Much cheaper if you can split the chaos force
And he gets a mini rulebook

I'd like to second Von Skyfury's opinion, but I'd say to search out AoBR marine sets on ebay. The Dark Vengeance models have DA icons sculpted on, and so would require a lot of work to make look like Salamanders. For the cost of a single battleforce, you can probably pick up three sets of AoBR marines and have a much larger force to start with.

To be honest I have been playing Dark Angels since 4th and have always wanted to start a Chaos Army so will keep the models from the 1st few sets before Selling/Trading them off.

Buy 2, keep one for you, give him the other one =P

Its amazing how fast things can go off topic.

As far as the Starting Set thing goes, planning on buying one a month until December to rebuild my Dark Angles [They got cannibalized by my Space Wolves]. I am also planning on using the Chaos to build my first real Chaos Army. If figure about November I will start having extra stuff.

What do you want in “Your” Armies Battle Force if you could choose what was in it?

I'd just go for the Vanilla SM box if he's doing Salamanders. The extra SW and BA bits would be neat to have but I'd rather have plain jane marines and some scouts.

For my battle force I would like the following:

Codex Space Marines:

Librarian in PA with staff
Full tac squad with Flamer/ML; Sgt. w/ Power Sword; Drop Pod
5 Scouts with Sniper Rifles and ML
Devastator Squad with MLs;
Pred w/ Autocannon and HB Sponsons

What I would like for my Grey Knights is

10 Terminator Grey Knights
20 Powered Armored Grey Knights
And either a Dreadknight or a Dreadnaught

1: I agree with most everyone here for the starter box, but for a battleforce for him I would probably recommend the Space Marine one, or a Ravenwing one if he wants to run bikes.

2: Ravenwing is pretty much perfect for me, but really a good one for any SM player would be, 2 tac swuads, 1 dev squad, and 1 rhino (Came up with this based on the fact that most battleforces end up running 140 when units are bought seperately seperate)

The thing is he wants to run Salamanders and know little about them.

Then go with the standard SM Battleforce

For my Guard Battleforce
1 Platton Command Squad and 2 Infantry Platons
1 Veteran Squad
3-10 Rough Riders
1 Manticor or Valk/Ven

Agree with Mr.Vonskyfury, who besides being a very nice chap also makes an excellent point

I will probably go for one Space Marine Battle Force to start with along with Vulcan.
With my spare marines I should be able to give him this.

I will try to replace the Missile Launchers with Multi-Meltas in the future and start making Missile Launcher Devastator Squads, probably when I pick up a second Space Marine Battle Force abound November.
