Yeah, he's not likely to ever leave due to their review loophole, but he is going to sit in prison for the rest of his life sucking away tax dollars.
Such a miscreant should be executed. He's obviously irredeemable, why lose millions and millions of dollars paying for this guy's living and medical expenses over the next 60ish years?
For feths sake why is it so fething hard to read, minimum

Easy there tiger. The sentence is a minimum of 21 years. It's also the maximum allowed under law (subject to reevaluation of course). So you're both right.
The fact the system is set up so that there's a cap on the top in the fine print confuses those who believe there are crimes which merit a life or even death sentence.
The law could just as easily state life in jail (subject to reevaluations). It's an emphasis thing.

Because Grey Templar is not as far as we know, a mass murderer.

Considering Scottish authorities were talked into letting the Lockerbie bomber go free I'm less than confident in the justice systems of countries more "civilized" than my own.
Actually that was due to Scots law which allows prisoners to be 'released' on compassionate grounds (at the time of his release he had an estimated 3 months left to live and he was still technically a Scottish prisoner who had to keep in regular contact with the Scottish authorities) and to be honest I don't have an issue with that. There is also quite a lot of doubt as to his actual guilt.
Norway has served justice and crucially the victims families are happy with the verdict in the main so really there isn't much else to say.

Because Grey Templar is not as far as we know, a mass murderer.
What he will need to do then is convince the Norwegian electorate that he is worthy to lead them and then change the law to allow capital punishment. Good luck with that.

Still doesn't add up to millions of dollars - I make a good living and can afford to buy pretty much plenty of luxury items and food, but even for me 21 years wouldn't add up to millions and millions of dollars.

He is being kept in solitary confinement in a maximum security prison, his incarceration will cost a lot.

Except the food/guards/clothes/electricity/water/building maintenance etc. are already being paid for, whether he is in prison or not.

If this was in the UK, the man would already be dead.
Not through legal means, but in the prison, there would be a guard "accidentally" leaving a few doors unlocked at night, and another prisoner "accidentally" hearing word that he's in the same block.
Has happened before numerous times in the case of serial killers/ child rapists, and it tends to make to make sure that the death is not a pleasant one.
A guard gets a caution, a prisoner gets another year or two added to their sentence, and the whole thing is dusted off.

He won't survive 21 years in jail. He has no chance unless he's kept in solitary confinement for the rest of his life.
To people saying that he deserves the death penalty: executing him just reduces you to the same level as him. You don't have the right to take someone's life and neither does he. Also rotting in jail for the rest of his life will be more punishment than a quick and humane end.

Even if I'm against death penalty, I'd say that it doesn't. Killing someone because he has demonstrated to be such a danger to society doesn't make you a dillusionnal, sadistic murderer. Few amongst those for death penalty ends up being violent vigilante, after all.
On top of things, there's really no doubt about his guilt. This comes down to judging equally everyone under the same laws of a country.

It is possible that when he's been locked up for 50 years and has watched his life pass by whilst staring at a cell wall that he will feel regret. Executing him just means that he goes to his grave cemented in his belief that what he did was right and he can become a martyr for others who share his views.
He wanted to leave a mark on the world, to be remembered. Let him sit in a cell until he dies. Let people forget about him whilst he is still alive. That is the ultimate punishment for people like him.
Of course if you are going to execute someone at least have the professionalism to break their spirit utterly beforehand to prevent martyrdom. If you half-ass it then O'Brien will be very disappointed

My guess?
He'll pretend to reform over the next 21 years, or however long it takes, get out on his supposedly good behavior, and then commit the same atrocity.

He's not getting out. That's the entire point.
Besides, they can't sentence him to anything more severe because that would mean rewriting the penal code to punish him, which isn't how the rule of law is supposed to work.

Every Norwegian I've talked to (OK, more like both of the Norwegians I've talked to, since there's only two) about this are all quite certain that he'll continually get time added to his sentence and will never see the outside of a prison again.
I feel he should get the death penalty, but Norway doesn't have it, so that's the end of that. Life in prison is pretty much just as good. I do wonder what kind of privileges may or may not be available to him in Norwegian prison, though; I recall that a certain infamous Norwegian black metal musician recorded a couple of albums while he was in prison, though he didn't exactly have access to high-quality recording equipment. A cheap synthesizer and a tape recorder, or something like that. Still, being allowed even that seems awfully lenient to me.

Sure. They're just gonna release him if he feigns some regret and writes a book about how wrong and bad he was?? How stupid do you think the Norwegians are??
Tibbsy wrote: Yeah, that's what I read as well. He can still appeal though. I don't think he should be allowed to do even that.
Exactly who should be in charge of deciding if a person is entitled to an appeal?
