How did they get past the imperial fleets, what were they looking for and how were they beaten?
(I've not read the fluff)

The fleet was made up of Shroud Class cruiser. Which allowed them to fly straight through a minefield mixed with the Necrons ship's natural ability to be near undectable.
They were beaten by the shear amount of firepower in the Sol system. However one did land on Mars before being blown to atoms.
Most things suggest they were after the Dragon on Mars.

This is the best possible answer I think.

Basically, they were vaporized upon landing.
Old Fluff, they were trying to free the Void Dragon.
New Fluff, they were following the rumor of a free C'tan on Mars and going to find it and capture it.

It doesn't exactly say that, but given the new fluff that the C'tan shards are enslaved by the Necrons and there arn't Necrons on Mars the only logical reason they'd go to Mars would be because a wild shard is around there.

Well obviously they were working with the Tau to make an Atmospheric processor that would heat up the frozen water in Mars' core and thus make a breathable atmosphere for the greater good. Unfortunately the Mechanicus didnt want all those AIR BREATHERS contaminating their facotries and put the Kaibosh on that!

Only a WD article explicitly states all C'tan have been shattered.
