Anyone wanna look up Bonus Army? The last time a Progressive had the reigns of power and used the US military to fire upon veterans, their wives, their children and those supporting them in order to enforce his will.

McCarthur, Eisenhower and Patton were there. They then were rewarded/hushed (Eisenhower was) by the Roosevelt Administration.

"The orders of the President must be obeyed" - journalist covering the event.

Its happened before, it will happen again.

I'm sure it had nothing to do with the fact that they were 43,000 strong and camping out on the Capitol building lawn.

It's interesting that instead of picking the most recent, well known example of the American military shooting it's own citizens (4 dead, Kent State) you chose to go with an obscure incident where half as many were killed, 80 years ago.

I mean, I guess it's possible that it's because the one you picked was a Democratic president, and the one everyone's heard of was a Republican one, but I'm sure that's not true... I mean, what kind of hyper-partisan toolbox would make those sorts of logical contortions in other to make such a ludicrous, easily-debunked "point"? I'd have to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume that's not where you're going with this, because that would just be laughable. But, bad laugh, not good one.

Of course it will. I don't see the problem.

Are you stupid, Spacemanvic? What progressive ordered the attack of the Bonus Army? It happened under the Hoover Administration.

You know how FDR defused a second smaller Bonus Army? He gave them jobs.

And, yes, the Bonus Army is a big deal historically. Why and how someone can try to use it against progressives is simply stupid. It would be like pointing to the Pullman Strike as evidence of some stupid conservative belief.

What the hell does this mean:

"Anyone wanna look up Bonus Army? The last time a Progressive had the reigns of power and used the US military to fire upon veterans, their wives, their children and those supporting them in order to enforce his will. "

What are you even talking about?

Who is the "Progressive" you speak of? It isn't Coolidge or Hoover. Hell, the neo-fascist boot lickers over at the Cato Institute think Coolidge is the best president America has ever had.

Seriously, dude, what are you talking about?

Also, any of the liberal types here who were snarky about how minor or unknown the Bonus Army was need to educate themselves. The Bonus Army is up there with the Pullman Strike or John Brown in terms of importance, and your ignorance of this subject and others is really awful.

I chose it for several reason, most of which have eluded you it seems.

Kent State was Ohio National Guard.

Bonus Army was attacked by U.S. Army.

Kent State was a quick, one time event. Bonus Army was grass roots, and did NOT embody any political movement. At one time, the Bonus Army was considered a Communist movement actually. Organizers asked Socialist and Communists to assemble a distance away, so as not to sully the entire movement. The Socialists and Communists complied.

Bonus Army occurred at a period when the economy was just recovering from a steep Recession (Recession of 1920-1921) and had entered into a Great Depression (1929 Crash). The veterans of WWI were promised bonus', which their struggling families desperately needed. Hence the march on Washington.

Hoover was a Republican A progressive Republican, much like Bush 1+2.

This was at the same time that army veterans were marching around Europe and installing dictatorships.

I'm not going to bother mentioning the various massacres committed against Trade Unionists during the same period. Suffice that to say it vastly exceeds the number you quoted.

Yes, Hoover was so progressive that he showed those beliefs by speaking out against the New Deal at every opportunity.

Again with the name calling. Fine, it's coming from you, so.....

"Hoover rejected Democratic overtures in 1920. He had been a registered Republican before the war, though in 1912 he had supported Theodore Roosevelt's "Bull Moose" Progressive Party. Now he declared himself a Republican and a candidate for the Presidency."
"A self-described progressive and reformer, Hoover saw the presidency as a vehicle for improving the conditions of all Americans by encouraging public-private cooperation—what he termed "volunterism"." - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herbert_Hoover

Stop talking gak.

Stop calling Hoover a progressive. No one considers him among the "Progressives" of Teddy Roosevelt fame, nor does anyone consider his policies to be progressive or liberal.

So only American citizens can post in this thread? Have you cleared that with the mod team, or are you just ignoring my point?

By what definition of "grass roots" was the Bonus Army "grass roots" while Kent State was not?

What is the fascination of the US military blindly following orders of the Pes these days? Eighty years....forty yrs ago......its a different mindset now compare to back then.

edit
I mention before. If an american decides to shoot at a "US Soldier" the american becomes a "Shooter" that needs to get eliminated.

If any of you are familiar with William Manchester's works go read American Caesar. There is a large section about this and how it was the heavy handed tactics of Douglas MacArthur that lead to this. And he was neither leftist nor rightist but an amazing example of both.

Good job, DutchKillsRambo! I'm glad someone has actually read something about the Bonus Army!

Yes, MacArthur exerted too much influence and it lead to some awful decisions. It's all a really interesting story, actually, and I remember that the police chief for DC was doing all the right things and trying very hard to do the right things, but that MacArthur circumvented all that work so he could kill some reds.

But, yeah, saying the Bonus Army was apolitical isn't accurate, either. It was quite left leaning, and many of the members later came out in support of FDR. It's one of the big reasons why FDR won election so strongly that year.

Shut up, Jihadin. You're talking gak.

And MacArthur wasn't apolitical. He fething hated anyone he viewed as a Communist, which was a pretty big list of people.
