I friend of mine just starting playing IG and I'm just clarifying the Deathstrike for him. Once the deathstrike is fired it is only one blast at d3+3" radius at the marked point of impact correct? Also, no -BS modifier for scatter since it is a barrage weapon? It just seems like such a haphazard weapon for the points that I wanted to make sure I understood it correctly.

It still scatters. You pick a model in the target unit and roll scatter (as normal). Once you determine the final position, you determine the size of the blast. After firing, the Deathstrike Missile cannot be fired again.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

Barrage weapons only lose the -BS if they fire within minimum range or outside LOS. If you've got range and LOS, you can subtract your BS from your scatter as normal.

Thanks guys. The deathstrike seems like such a big points investment for only a possible return. Why isn't it just a guaranteed 6" blast? If I spend 160pts on a one shot weapon I want to know that thing has a better than average chance of hitting. Is the deathstrike as bad as it seems to be on paper? Anyone have any good experiences with it or is just a "fun" vehicle to take for IG?

That would be my take on it, yes. Honestly, it should probably be an apocalypse-only unit.

It is silly fun, especially when it lands on target in the middle of a huge swarm of Gants and gets the maximum size. The Overmind definitely felt that one...

Remember, it is up to 6" radius, so up to 12" across, which with good scatter, can cover a lot of units.

It does sound a little better when you say it that way.

Geometry is your friend.

Even the average roll of 5" radius, means it covers 4 times the area of a regular large blast template. It also means that even if you scatter 8", you will still hit the guy you were targetting. (along with a lot of folks in his unit.)

5" radius is measured from the center. Scatter is measured from the center. How can a 5" radius hit the target after an 8" scatter? Wouldn't it be 3" away?

Yes, the area of effect would be 10" across - but only 5" of that matters for the declared target model.

It cant - i think theyre meaning a 5" scatter would stil hit the target

It also ignores cover, which is pretty good!

Well we'll see how it does in our next game. If it turns out to be pretty cool then my Orkz might have to loot one (include some IG allies that is).
