Games Workshop stores will have special merchandise on Saturday, September 1 to promote the Dark Vengeance Warhammer 40,000 Starter Set release. This is similar to what was done on the release day for the Warhammer 40,000 6th Edition Rule Book back in July when they had 40K promotional belts, hats and lanyards. I haven't seen any pictures of this out there, but I believe this time there will be a hat and some Dark Angels and Chaos bracelets or something similar based on the limited info available from my source. The amount of these types of items is usually very limited, so if you want to obtain these items it's best to get to your local GW early in the day on Saturday.

Obviously GW stores will also have promotional events this day. For example, the local Battle Bunker in my area in Bowie, MD will be having gaming and painting related activities all day. Join us!

My GW was closed when 6th edition was launched since they were changing locations. Did you have to buy these hats/lanyards/etc or were they given off or raffled?

They were sold, correct. Incorrect, however, that it was for lots of money. The belts (really nice ones) were $5 US, the hats were also I think $5 and the lanyards were $3.

Which is far too much money. They'll have cost a pitance to manufacture, and you could have bought something similar from any other shop for at most half the cost.

I doubt that, kitch (about "at most half the cost"). Not that I'm interested in buying any...

BrassScorpion, you might want to watch out with the avatar- for the longest time, I've thought it was a MLP circling a dreadnought- not one getting ripped in half. Kind of sends a different message if you don't notice that

Not true in the least, you cannot buy a decent web belt with a custom belt buckle for less than $5. I know people here hate GW, but don't be ridiculous.

As for the avatar photo, yeah, it's a pony being ripped in half. I was inspired to take it when I saw how many "bronies" there are on this forum.

My local GW store had the beanies around forever. Probably because selling black wool beanies in June in Arizona is not a recipe for success.

To add insult to injury, the A/C in the store died that morning, making the store even warmer than normal (this particular store faces the brutal AZ summer sun in the afternoon).

The Maryland area is miserable in July too with high temps and high humidity. I heard a lot of the smaller stores had trouble selling the promotional merchandise. However, everything but the lanyards sold out in a weekend at our Battle Bunker. I bought a hat, but that's planning ahead, it's cold enough in the winter here to be worth it.

I wish I could have purchased more than just the belt and hat I got for myself. The stuff fetches good money from people who couldn't get a chance at it due to lack of GW stores in their area.

Don't be ridiculous? How much do you know about sales margins, product development and everything else that goes withthat stuff?

Customised lanyards available for £0.37p - £0.58p here http://www.bluepanda.co.uk/category/128/lanyards.html
Beany hats from £1.34 each http://www.bluepanda.co.uk/product/618/acrylic-beanies.html
Wristbands from 17p to 55p http://www.promotionalmerchandise.co.uk/Lanyards-&-Wristbands,c-258.html
Canas belt from £2.73 http://www.promotionalmerchandise.co.uk/Bespoke-Polyester-Canvas-Belts,p-17301,333.html (admittedly not likely a direct match though the closest I can find on a quick google search)

Now bare in mind that these prices are for small quantities of 250+. Consider that GW will be bulk buying these in 10's of thousands. Then consider that they'll be getting them mass produced in China or somewhere else that literally gaks on the prices that I've given above, it'll be a hell of a lot cheaper to manufacture these things than you think.

I get that you're referencing my quote about being able to go to another shop for a lower price, and yes if you go on the likes of ebay then you can. Canvas belts cost nothing to buy, nor do belt buckles. As an example I recently got a zippo style lighter bought and engraved for a friend for £4, when I was looking at at least £20 if bought in town. You just have to know where to look.

Oh, and by the way, I'm not a hater. /Fact

Any kind of even modestly popular band, and the merchandise costs three-four times that. Beanies with band logo go from 10 to 20 euros (more popular band, more expensive they get).

Completely agree, though (from my experience) they're often better quality, have bigger logo's, and aren't for a niche market.

Special to me means limited edition figures, even if the figure is a reissue of an older model or selling a mini that normally comes in a boxed set on its own. A hat and a wristband just don't have that wow factor.

I mean for the 25th anniversary they could have released some old 80s or 90s era models.

The hats sold out pretty quickly on the weekend, all that's left at my local store are some wristbands.

If there were a GW store near me, I'd totally buy a Black Templar, Ork, or Chaos lanyard for $3.00 to use at GenCon for my 4 Day pass. Not a steep price at all.
