I am very new to the game of warhammer 40k. I am playing space wolves and I just recently got my first box of guys (the Space Wolves marine tatical pack) and with it I made 9 grey hunters (one with a flamer, and one with a plasma gun so I can't use them in the same squad) and 1 wolf lord with 2 wolf claws.

so my army currently consists of a squad of 8 grey hunters, (with my choice between a flamer or plasma gun guy) and a Wolf Lord HQ in the squad.

tonight I am ordering another box of guys, but i'm not sure what I should get. Should I get some space wolf terminators, or some thunderwolf calvary? or should I get another tatical marine pack and make more grey hunters?
I was wanting to get the space wolf terminators, but i'm not sure if that is a good idea to get at this point in time

Also was it a good decision on my part to make a squad of 8 grey hunters with a Wolf Lord HQ? or should I take a different approch?

Thank you very much for reading/helping

I would get more GH. After that I would get two boxes of SM Dev's and go from there. You should build a list first, at 500 pts. and work from there.

You will need at-least 2x GH squads, so I would work on those first. After you get your feet wet and build a list, then seeing what to buy next will be your call.

I would get the Space Wolf Battleforce or 2.
Devistator Squad is also a good choice.

I'm also just starting space wolves and have 2 of the wolf pack boxes that you mentioned. From these 2 boxes of 10 guys you can make a nice starting 500 point list. Here is what I have right now and plan to use to start learning how to play with space wolves:

HQ: Rune Priest with runic armour 120pts

TROOP: 6 standard Grey Hunters + 1 with Plasma Gun: 115 pts

TROOP: 4 standard GH, + 1 Plasma Gun, +1 Power axe with wolf standard: 125 pts

TROOP 4 standard GH, + 1 Plasma Gun, +1 Power Fist with wolf standard: 135 pts

Total of 500 points. This will be my start and then I intend to bulk these squads out by buying a vanilla marine tactical squad and wolfing them up so I can get access to a melta gun and flamer, but thats next months purchase

Hope this helps.

Battleforce is a good choise for the begging that way i start my SW army

"Listen closely Brothers, for my life's breath is all but spent. There shall come a time far from now when our Chapter itself is dying, even as I am now dying, and our foes shall gather to destroy us. Then my children, I shall listen for your call in whatever realm of death holds me, and come I shall, no matter what the laws of life and death forbid. At the end I will be there. For the final battle. For the Wolftime."Leman Russ

Very true as 20 GH, a drop pod and scouts are all good choices. From my point of view though, I didnt want to spend that kind of money up front. I prefer to buy 1 unit at a time and not buy the next until its fully painted. By doing this it ensures that 1. I have a fully painted army and 2. I dont rush into buying something without thinking it through thoroughly whilst painting

This ^. The battleforce is a very good deal. If you have the $, to buy one of these it will save you money. For $120, you get

20 Space Wolves ( ~ $80)
5 Scouts ( ~ $20)
1 Drop Pod ( ~ $35)

On the other hand, if you can't afford the battleforce, you should consider a box of 10 tactical marines. You can use the bits left over from your Space Wolves box to build these guys up with wolfy bits. But in addition, the Tactical Space Marine box comes with a meltagun, a flamer, and most importantly a MISSILE LAUNCHER. These are bits that you will need / want, but do not come with the space wolves box.

If you're looking to save money then search craigslist and ebay. There is always someone selling off their vanilla space marines, cheap.

Then buy a SW bits lot on ebay and customize. I did that for some of my SW collection and actually saved about 70% off retail.

These are sage words. The only thing I would caution you about is to know what kind of quality level you want your army to have. If you're looking to have a "best painted" army, then you may want to make sure to buy only un-assembled models. That way, you can control the quality of your army. On the other hand, if you're just going to spray them grey and paint the shoulder pads yellow, then by all means buy the "pre-owned" space marines.

Exactly.
I had bought a bunch of vanilla marines, a bag of bits, and green stuff. I spent countless hours converting them to make them look like space wolves. I learned a lot about converting, sculpting, modding. After a few months and 40 converted space marines I was so done with converting. I broke down and bought the SW battleforce (i never used the drop pod or scouts) and a lot of other SW models.

If you're a perfectionist like me and have to have great looking models and compete on the painting level then get the actual models for the army. If you're doing it on the cheap and don't care about quality then just glue SW bits on any cheap marines you can get.

+1 This got me a good source of information and preparation. Just remember most of the info is 5th edition based, so take some of it with a bit of salt.

I'd second the motion to hit ebay, I've been able to build multiple 2k+ armies for next to nothing. I've done the second hand thing, and the new on sprue. I actually enjoy the assembly so usually go with the sprues.
If you want cheap and plentiful I'd checkout the seller "discount-game-store" on ebay. You can sometimes (rarely) find stuff cheaper but I've bought a ton of crap from them for rock bottom prices and they always throw in extra bits if you buy in bulk (so far I've got 10 scouts, an attack bike,
3 Raven wing sprues, and a Land Speeder this way). They are also affordable for single purchases. The following is a typical listing:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Warhammer-40K-Space-Wolves-Space-Wolf-Pack-x2-20-total-space-wolves-NEW-/390461012711?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item5ae94a3ae7

If you're willing to spend some time scraping off DA insignia, buy a bunch of the new starter set squads. Alot of people bought the limited edition sets simply to get the chaplin, and are dumping the other bits at rock bottom prices to offset the cost. I've seen the tac squad pre-sales going for as low as 10 dollars with free shipping. The prices will go up after the glut has passed, but for the next month or so you can get these guys for a song! You could also pick up the librarian cheap, wolf him up with some green stuff or bits and get yourself a very respectable rune priest (got mine for $7 with free ship). Here are the cheapest I could find when posting

Tactical: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Warhammr-40k-Dark-Vengeance-Dark-Angels-Tactical-Squad-/180961720316?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2a2228b7fc

Librarian: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Dark-Vengeance-Librarian-Pre-Order-Free-Shipping-/261088106461?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3cca1057dd

If you're really only going to do one squad at a time, use that lag to slowly troll. I bought a bulk lot of Space Wolves for $20 a few weeks ago. They were well assembled and came with tons of bits, including an apothecary.
The key here is to be patient and check daily. If it takes you a few weeks to build an paint a squad you'll have plenty of time to find what you're looking for at a price you're comfortable with. Here's an example:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Warhammer-40k-SPACE-WOLVES-LOT-15-FIGURES-all-built-no-paint-4-dev-6BLC-6-Grey-H-/251139442176?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3a7913c600

Hope that helps, and good luck!
