As the title implayes. Are penal legion any good worth the points? im not thinking for them to simply kill everything they see. But more for a fun army without me shooting myself in the foot by taking them.

And if they are worth using how should i use them?

If you get the rule with rending they can be devastating if coupled with someone like Yarrick who allows rerolls to hit on charge.

I was able to charge a friends necron overlord and chop him to pieces in 1 turn with no hassles. I would only use them in this fashion.

I guess they would also be worth a shot against space marines where the armour saves will usually save their backsides. Just need to hope for a 5 or 6 when rolling what they are

if you get 1 or 2 then they kind of suck .

They can't be fielded in large enough squads to be effective. 10 T3 models with a 5+ save who can't assault out of an outflank aren't terribly useful. They're also pricey for what you get, especially when Veterans compete for the same slot, number of models, and points cost. If you could field hordes of them, I'd be happy to use them. Right now they're just overcosted and ineffective Guardsmen without special weapons.

And if you look at the fluff, you really should be able to. It brags an "endless supply" of the poor buggers.

this is pretty much it. They were a borderline choice in 5th, almost completely due to the ability to assault out of outflanking. Absent that... they don't have the bodies to tarpit nearly as well as even a minimum blob, dont' kill much of anything, and are only slightly more mobile than the other troops choices.

A squad isn't completley wasted points in a fun/casual list, but they really are pretty suboptimal.
