Red... there's a difference from owning your own syndicated radio show, versus working for a major corporate.

Rush can say whatever he wants and suffer any consequences (some Advertiser stop working with him remember).

That Editor made Yahoo look really bad.

While I agree he should have been canned - he made his employer look bad in a really public way - I'd like to point out that if this was the DNC instead of the RNC, and he said that about Obama, and got fired, Fox News would immediately offer him a job while derping loudly about his "first amendment rights".

So yes, as the previous posted said; "accountability".

You're talking about Juan Williams... right?

*Also, not to sidetrack, but out of all the companies that offer mainstream finance coverage and stock tickers, isn't it bizarre that finance.yahoo.com is so first rate? I mean, it's just inexplicable; like seeing a drunk frat buffoon suddenly start reciting flawless Yeats. I mean, it's possible, sure, but you're mostly thinking how the F did we get that? Right? Back me up, OT.

Yup.

So what you are saying is that there is nothing bad about saying that your political opponents should die?

It is only who you work for that makes that statement bad?

Of course not... just pointing out there's a difference. Rush represent himself... he owns his radio show, so whatever he says, he'll have to answer for.

The reporter (actually, it's worst, he's an EDITOR) makes a comment like that, it made Yahoo look bad.

I agree entirely.

But your question was " who on the right said "worse" things in the media? Just curious... "

Which this does answer one would suggest.

One would suggest this is just as terribad a d-list actress who most people didn't recognise at all making a comment on Twitter.

Not least as Rush does have clout amongst the right -- allbeit the insane-in-the-membrane part of it ( and yes, the left has it's fair share of whackos too of course).

Course if we go back further we have Bachmann saying that hurricane Irene and the earthquake not long after it were pretty much warnings from God and it shows how wrong things were going.

.. I'm assuming this hurricane is down to global warming right... ... oh.... err....

Red... I'm acutally agreeing with you here... I was just pointing out the difference.

And there's whackos everywhere.

Is George Galloway still around? He's a bit off, eh?

I listen to quite a bit of Rush and he talks about how he's "America's anchor" and lots of other platitudes. He sure seems to talk about himself as an anchor, and sure seems to phrase his entire program as one that seeks to educate people about the day's news and events.

But, still, just read the New York Post (or just skim the front page, ugh), or Washington Times, or Wall Street Journal and you'll see some pretty awful gak that no one ever apologizes for ever.

and ?

So what ?

He made a dumb comment and had his microphone on and, rightly, got canned for it. Story over.

It's hardly news that people have their own opinions is it ?

I'd agree this could even vaguely be shocking if this had been laughed off or people had stuck up for him or made some nonsense argument about his freedom of speech.. opression.. blah blah etc etc

... but that didn't happen.

So your story here appears to be : person who doesn't like Romney doesn't act professionally and is fired for it.

And he's the editor of a major news outlet. His work product, and that of his network, is utterly trashed when he says such nonsense.

thats their right under free enterprise to drop an entertainer, just like dropping another entertainer. Confusing Rush Limbaugh with a reporter/editor is nonsensical.
Its like confusing Roseanne with the editor of the NY Times.

Does Rosanne collect news and pass them on as well as present editorials? The "he's not a reporter, he's an entertainer" is just a smokescreen that conservatives like to wrap themselves in to avoid having to hold him responsible for anything he says.

The story here is that an newsman, an editor at that, was feeding a guest lines. Add that those line were purposely intended to portray a group of people as crass and racist and you have an issue.
The story starts and ends at "unprofessional editor fired." It really has nothing to do with who he does or doesn't like. Conservative news outlets will use this story to trumpet "proof of the liberal media bias." like virtually anything else they do. So it shuffles into informative but hardly revelatory news; like sports scores.

don't be daft.

He's one editor, from a network. So there's plenty of other some of whom are quite likely to have their own opinions and thoughts on a wide variety of things.

This is a person whom most people have never and would never have heard of. His opinions means diddly.

Now if he was caught fiddling with the edits or some such , deliberating misquoting for example ... say cutting out a section of a persons' speech so it might seem they were ridiculing or claiming that people who run their own business haven't earnt it or don't deserve their success.. top o' my head example ... then I agree this would be a story of note or even a scandal.

But seeing as they're covering a live event and his involvement seems to be deciding which camera they switch too at what moment, and as -- to the best of my knowledge -- there's no accusation that the network in questions coverage has been deficient in some manner here --- I don't think there's any real story here.

Unless you're now saying that one person's views are suddenly enough to condemn an entire institution ? Which is harsh as these corporations are people too, apparently, and it also means we're fethed then as with the possible exception of "The Wiggles" I don't believe there's an organisation, group or institution that hasn't had someone in it mess up in some way or other.

... someone's now going to link to some truly horrific necro-bestial-narcotic scandal involving The Wiggles now aren't they ?

Just to clarify : are saying what Rush said is alright then ?

So your standard for whether someone is a reporter is whether they collect news and pass them on? Holy crap I'm a reporter. Time to dust off my old fedora and the old Brother typewriter! *
Are your standards for attorneys, doctors, surveyors, and engineers similarly rigorous?

Howard Stern reads the news and talks about it too, or he did when he was on the radio.
Rush to my knowledge didn't graduate from college, he certainly has never been a journalist at any level. He is a guy with a microphone and an opinion not a reporter. It's not a smokescreen it's a fact, he's a political shock jock whom no one: NO ONE considers a journalist of any stripe unless you are prepared to tell me Howard Stern is a journalist too.

Brother is still.around, I think they make printers and scanners now. I don't remember them being particualrly nice typewriters though. I had an Underwood mechanical, it's in storage somewhere. My Mom had an electric stored somewhere I should dig up to do my papers this semester.

I think the difference here is context and who's hearing it.

Everyone would expect an insensitive comment from Rush so at this point nobody really cares what he says. Meanwhile a guy that works for Yahoo makes a very wicked comment on the air that really shows his racisim(he implies that everyone supposedly drowning is black)

Its all context. No wonder and good riddence that he got fired. I hope he never gets a job working in media again.

And no, if this guy had done this on a very liberal media outlet I highly doubt it would have resulted in Fox going on about his freedom of speech rights. They would have latched onto "Liberal Media network has racist employees" and run with that.

There is always the question of how you bill yourself. I mean, nobody expects Rush or Oberman or Huffpost or Foxnews to not have an editorial voice (or bias, depending on if you like them or not).

What's a problem for a new outlet trying to be objective is having a very clear voice/bias emerge.

So, sure, we expect Rush to say outrageious things. It's also his job to say outrageous things. It's how he sells himself to listeners.

We dont' expect that from Yahoo.

it's like going to the local diner and getting a disgustingly greasy patty melt, compared to getting the same at a steakhouse.
