I played lots of Civ 2 years back, loved it. I want to get it going again, but I am wondering which of the series is you consider the best?

So which Civ is the bestest playable civ?
I prefer Civ 3 conquests for large scale civ games, 4 is acceptable but a bit lost in features a game like civ does not need.
Civ 5 ? don't care, I want a complete game not some fancy alpha version and updates to pay for..
Liked civ 1 back in its days.. Played civ 2 a few times but never had a copy myself.

Alpha Centauri blows every other Civ game out of the water. The strategy in that game beggars everything that has come since.
Say after decades of war, only three factions remain. They are all allied. If any one faction declares war, the other two would annihilate it. What do you do? Raise a new mountain range, build some thermal boreholes. Turn your "allies" into starving desert nations. Or just say screw it. Nerve staple the drones, exterminate the mind worms, and accept the thermonuclear bombardment as you grav chute your infantry in to nerve gas the cities of those foolish enough to oppose you.

Civ IV. Good graphics, great gameplay.
Also Fall From Heaven 2. An insanely good mod that essentially acts as a fantasy-based add-on. Still features basic gameplay like basic civ iv but with elves and goblins 'n' ting.

Not the 'best' Civ, but Civ Revolution is great for a quick Civ fix.

Honestly, I like Civ V the best. There were just too many things about Civ IV that annoyed me to no end, and none of them are present in Civ V. Sure, you still get other civs bitching at you every other turn, but it seemed far more toned down than before. I swear I had games where there were 2 or 3 people chatting me up every single turn in IV.

I would have to say that I liked Civ V the best. I liked the elimination of unit stacking, and the hex grid for the game. Expanding territory near others is a bit ridicules though, an ally could be at war with you in 5 turns if you build a city too close to them.

I am kind of partial to Civ 4.
Alpha Centauri was way better than the Civ games. Do they still sell it or is it an ebay only now?

I loved Civ III, enjoyed Civ IV, and Civ V with the new Gods and Kings plus workshop is surprisingly excellent.

I gotta admit, I was a little underwhelmed by Gods & Kings (religions are nice, but the effects tend to be incredibly specific), but I thought it was all worth it just for the steampunk scenario. That thing was amazing.

I do share the opinion of many that the Gods and Kings content should have been included from the beginning, and any expansions should have included a lot more stuff to make it worth buying. That said, it still adds some nice flavour, and religion does add a facet to your gameplay. You can't win with it alone, but having a strong religion is incredibly useful.
And yes, that scenario is pretty kickass.

Civ 4 has a pretty awesome Fantasy mod called 'Fairy Tale'.
My friends and I used to say when we LAN'd that we wanted a nice Fantasy setting (since we inevitably called our places things like 'The Imperial City' or 'The Republic', yaddy yaddy yadda...
