So I went and picked up my Conquest today. I'm not gonna lie I am giddy like a kid on Christmas....

However for some reason I am extremely intimidated by this model. Just trying to figure out how to make a 120mm base look good has me scratching my head, let alone trying to figure out pinning and magnetizing this monster of a model. I guess I am just scarred of messing it up....

How is the rest of your army based? For my cryx they are moving through mud/swamp areas so I've got a load of holes in bases ready for fake water. From this I've got my kraken coming out of the water but surrounded by parts of discarded corpses that I bought from somewhere. Links to the army and isn't just a big empty base.

so far in the army I have been going with a scorched earth look. basically black sand with a nice dry brush of white...

I know it wont work for him. I'm thinking of something similar with small and bigger stones, maybe some burnt brush here and there.

I also have some stuff from Scibor that could make great ruins on a base....

Ruins would fit in for sure. I've seen people use the GW ruins to surround the wraith engine's base, but the scibor stuff should look much better. Maybe a couple of slabs/flagstones peaking out of the earth?

@Crazy_Carnifex: If I had extra jack parts laying around I would, but I don''t want to order them just for basing.(and I think the wife might just lose it if I did....)

@yastobaal: That sounds interesting....I'm thinking cutting them down some to make it look deeper maybe? or figuring out how to make a mud effect...

Here is how i did my conquest base. All my army is grey stone and hard packed snow. I know it seems boring but it is quick and very durible gaming wise. I had the same thought as you with such a large base but i found that no one is looking at the base when it is on the board.

Have you tried to hollow out the bases or section of it and put maybe a small section of trenches in make it look like he is advancing over them?

You could use some pre-made bases. I know Secret Weapon miniatures makes them in 120mm round lipped in several different varieties - it's cost you a little and you'd have to wait to get it, but it's an idea.

But generally, just match whatever you've been doing.

Pipboy, that is a very very nice Conquest.

I love the secret weapon mini's stuff, but I am gonna make it myself gosh darn it (cuz i be broke now).

I would like to try sinking the base but I think that I might just wait to experiment like that on a different model.

Your not going to mess him up. The model is a nice model. Even basic dry brusing, and techniques will make it look nice. Basic basing with some minor additions is what i've seen so far in my local gaming. In the end, the game does not require painting for most events. So as long as its complimenting the rest of your army, you are fine.

I love the large base. So much you can do. Like a mini diorama.

For my stormwall I made a ruined building that he stepped on and had some skulls and skeletons around for dead cryx. It is practically a peice of terrain, but I tried not to get too carried away to detract from the model.

As for magnetizing the guy, I magnetized the waist of my stormwall so he came apart in two sections (top and bottom). made it much easier to fit him into a case to transport.

There is a guy on the PP forums who added joints to the stormwalls arms and guns so they can move and be posable. He is also working on adding lights.

Yep, I know the base is very plain. As more games an tournys are played with the Conquest more will be added to the base. The Snow basing I use can be removed, stuff added and then more snow added back on. So far one tourny and some marking were added to the sides of the mini. It did noting that warranted adding something to the base yet.

If you were thinking about the wrecked jack idea but don't want to order individual parts you could always think about using a wreck marker on the base?

I would suggest avoiding the impulse to make the base overly decorated unless you plan to use it as a showpiece. The larger base does offer some nice chances to work with footprints or foliage that you can't fit on other bases, but keeping a strong theme within your arm is important as well.

One suggestion I like is to have the conquest crashing through a low wall with it's legs. You can buy hobby scale bricks at a lot of hobby shops for very cheap, and they make for a great bit of "action" in your basing without you having to break theme since walls can be anywhere at any time.

@ Deadnight

@ ShumaGorath, I have decided to do a mud base for him, I think its fitting that he would churn and destroy the earth around him. I really like the idea of having a brick wall broken around him too.

You could keep your scorched earth theme and add tufts of dead grass, then maybe some bit of debris or a moderatly sized piece of cork painted black with a light grey-white drybrush

that Kong-quest is awesome!

As to the base of yours I agree with adding in some dead grasses. Just a few here and there to break it up. You can get the static grass cheap enough that the wife won't mind, trust me I am in the same boat here. You can even go back and add a few tufts to the rest of the army too...sort of the little growth after the scorched earth pushing through.

I'm having a similar dilemma with my Mountain King. Such a large base needs something beautiful for it. I'm basing it in a similar scheme to the rest of my trolls. Fine, Medium, and Coarse GF9 Grit plus a heavy wash of either Sepia or Army Painter Quick Shade followed by some of the GF9 autumn shrubbery.

I also added some slate to add in the rock breaking that goes along with his left fist...

I really like that Stormwall's foot.

My Conquest says hi! I'll be adding a Winterguard Rifleman or two to the trench after it's painted, along with a few barrels and some barbed wire.

EDIT: Actually, I've already added barbed wire and sandbags. Must get new pictures...

Good grief! That base is perfect for a Storm Strider. And then I'll need to rebase Nemo. And Strangewayes. And... Oh This is gonna get expensive ain't it?
