Ok, so I know that if you take out all of someone's ground forces on turn 1 before the flyers arrive then they are tabled according to page 122.
My question is this. On pg. 80, the BRB states that the base of a flyer is completely ignored except for assaults, embarking, and disembarking. So essentially the model is counted as floating above the table to represent that it is flying. Back to page 122 again, the BRB says that if a player has no models on the battlefield then his opponent automatically wins.
So does this mean that, lets say its game turn 3, and I take out all the ground forces of a necron air force list but not all the flyers. Would this be an automatic victory since the flyers are technically above the battlefield and never on it? Sort of like GW's way of saying that you need ground forces for your army to hold ground?

You are implying that since the Flyer is not technically ON THE BOARD your opponent would loose? Im thinking that is a bit of a streatch and would have to say no to that one.

The flyer is still in the battlefield as long as it doesnt go zooming off the board, which satisfies your rule for tabling, or rather not tabling, your opponent.

This seems like a somewhat too-literal reading of "ignore the base". The model is on the table...

RAW, you're correct. I doubt anyone would play it, though...
Just another reason why playing 'strictly RAW' never works... Maybe we should bring back the RAW Fun Thread for 6ed?

It is not RAW. The flyer is on the battlefield, even if it is flying. You are reading it too literally.

ok, thanks for the answers. I ask because this came up against my flyers and his argument seemed valid and I had no rule to refute him.

The new FAQ changed this. If all you have are flyers you lose. Unless that flyer has hover, and you better make him hover on your turn or you will lose.

You only lose if the fliers are off the board.

No, that's not what the FAQ is referring to. It specifically mentions losing in the first game turn if all of your units are embarked on flyers. This is because it is impossible to have a flyer on the table on turn one as they will all be in reserves. Game turn two, your flyers come in and you do not disembark or change to hover. The opponent completely destroys any ground units you may have. You do not lose as the flyers are still on the table.

Or he's misreading this one:
Q: If you leave combat airspace with all of your Flyers and have no
other models on the gaming board at the beginning of your
opponent's turn, do you automatically lose the game? (p122)
A: Yes.
Either way, it requires everything to be in Reserves (regular or ongoing) for the loss to occur.

In the first case, it specifically refers to the 1st turn, before your fliers enter the field. After that, they count as models on the battlefield just like everything else. The second FAQ is what answers the OP's question.

Basically no flyers can be on the board turn 1 due to being in reserve... So if you have nothing on the board turn 1, game over.
In addition, if you end ANY turn with nothing on the board, you lose. This means you better hope you can bank your flyer 90degrees and go 18" and don't fly him off the board if you are in risk of being tabled.
Someone must be on the board at all times or you lose.
