Yesterday I was reading Fear to tread and I was shocked how Sanguinius was afraid of showing "red thirst" to anybody (even the emperor),and how he doesn't want t end up like "missing legions"...
So my question is this - Is the Emp really a douchebag who geneticaly modifies then destroys his sons for being flawed or chaos altered? And how is it that Wulfen curse was O.K. back then which is even worse ?

ADB: I showed the Wolves revealing the key weakness at the heart of the World Eaters; showing Angron that his Legion was broken and worthless compared to the others; that he was the one primarch who couldn't trust his own warriors, and that they didn't care if he lived or died; showing that loyalty to brothers and sons is the heart of success for the Legiones Astartes, to the point even Lorgar makes a big deal out of saying the World Eaters and their primarch were massively outclassed by Russ, and Angron was too stupid to see the lesson Russ had sacrificed time, sweat, and blood, to teach. We're talking about a battle the Wolves won, by isolating the enemy general through pack tactics, and threatening to kill him, without a hope of defending himself. It was a balance, 50/50 - Angron overpowered Russ, and the Wolves were losing ground to the World Eaters; but Russ and his warriors had Angron by the balls, and barely broke a sweat. They won, no question. Lorgar even says: "The Wolves won, meathead."
Dorn won’t help you either. He’s too busy being the Emperor’s groundskeeper, hiding behind the palace walls. The Wolf is too busy cutting off heads as our father’s executioner, while the Lion holds on to his secrets, and has no special fondness for you. Who else will come? Not Ferrus, certainly. Nor Corax either. Even as we speak, I suspect he flees for Deliverance. Sanguinius?’ Curze laughed cruelly. ‘The angel is more cursed than I. The Khan? He does not wish to be found. So who is left? No one, Vulkan. None of them will come. You are simply not that important. You are alone.’ Konrad Curze to Vulkan

I don't think that Leman told the emprah about his wolfies either TBH. And the emperor might not have eradicated the legion, and he certainly wouldn't have killed Sanguinius, but Sangy liked his perfect reputation and didn't want it marred

No way, read the book - he was clearly afraid - and Magnus knew about the Wulfen even before Prospero burning thingy , and when Wyrdmake and Ahriman spoke they were exchanging their knowlege of mutation or flaw like it was public knowlege....

The way Sanguinius spoke about a 3rd empty plinth, its clear to me that at least one of the missing legions was destroyed due to some mutation. However since even the primarchs knew nothing of chaos, its possible that they don't know the whole story. The mutation in the missing legion(s) may have been from chaos influence, the Emperor noticed it and had them destroyed before it could spread. The Wulfen curse is not from chaos and so the Emperor leaves it alone. Sanguinius wouldn't be able to tell the difference, so he is afraid of what the Emperor might do.

But the Emperor loved sanguinius so completely that I don't know if he could of killed him even if the Red Thirst had been chaos caused. I mean the guy had WINGS and the Big E let him alone

Maybe but Wulfen is still a genetic flaw with a same but deadlier effect ( for the opponents thou ), and I don't know where to put TS flash change...hmmmm it was also common knowlege I think...

Actually text later shows that Sang thinks Emp has a bigger perspective rather then one Son problems and he is pretty damn sure on that (and so thinks every other Primarch)..
Horus later promises he won't tell anything....
And here is my observation - Emp loved his sons to a certain level - but not more then safety of Mankind, and he would mauled them if he thought they pose a threat (which fits fine in the grimdark of the 30k)
P.S. Horus was exception....

Black Library writer Dan Abnett describes the Space Wolves:
"Space Marines are inherently tough, but Space Wolves are particularly dangerous. They are ruthless, they are savage, they are brutal. It begs the question; why would the emperor permit something quite so dangerous and untamed to exist? And that would be to take down another Space Marine Legion."
SW mutation had a purpose - red thirst didn't....

The Wolves go for the throat. We go for the eyes. Then the tongue. Then the hands. Then the feet. Then we skin the crippled remains, and offer it up as an example to any still bearing witness. The wolves were warriors before they became soldiers. We were murderers first, last, and always."
-- First Captain Sevatar, when asked why the Night Lords aren't the Emperor's sanction force against other Legions.
