So Here's my current Idea for a Drop Pod Based Space Wolf Army
HQ
Rune Priest
Power Armor, Chooser of the Slain, JOWW, Storm Caller, Melta Bomb
Rune Priest
Power Armor, Chooser of the Slain, JOWW, Tempests Wrath
Troops
(2x) 10 Man Grey Hunter
Plasmagun x2, MOTW, Wolf Standard
Drop Pod
(2x) 10 Man Grey Hunter Squad
meltagun x2, MOTW, Wolf Standard
Drop Pod
(2x) 9 Man Grey Hunter Squad
Plasmagun, Wolf Standard, one of the squads has MOTW (couldn't afford it in both squads)
Heavy
(3x) 6 man Long Fang Squads
ML x5, bare bones Sgt
Drop Pod
Obviously this is a Gray Tide List. 72 power armored bodies, 58 of them scoring.
The list sports 9 drop pods in the army, meaning that 5 hit first round. You have two plasma squads, two melta squads, and two squads with Rune Priests. Drop whatever you need to suit your enemy and when the last one comes in just plonk it on a far flung objective or reinforce the first wave.
The 3 Long Fang Squads can either hide in cover for the first round, or if you lose the roll off they can stay in the pods and come in on the second round (not my first choice). The threat of having nothing on the board might just get your opponent to forfeit first round, and solve the problem for you.
What do you guys think? Any feedback would be appreciated.

It's a good list.
You'll have trouble with flyer spam, but what SW list won't?

Yeah, Fliers will be a pain, but unless I drop a squad or two for the quad gun and ADL I can't think of a solution. With 15 missiles a round from the LF, average is 2.5 6's and the Plasmaguns can always join in if in range to try to down them. Hopefully the ground forces will be knocked out quick, and I can just hide them in cover after that

I wouldnt take 3 drop pods for the LF instead why not a rune priest to steak with a LF

The only reason for the pods on the LF is to raise the total number of drop pods, so you get more on the first turn. Without the LF pods I'd have 6 pods total, so only 3 would drop on round one instead of 5, which is a difference of two full squads worth of shooting on round one. Having a 3rd runepriest would be nice, but getting my GH in reliably on the first round seems like a better bet.

I think you're army is perfect the way it is. You'll have trouble with flyer spam, but I don't think there is anything you can (or should) really do about it. Most opposing lists are going to have a tough time against you.
However...have you ever built a drop pod? They're a huge pain in the a$$. Do you really want to build 9 of them?
Also, they're kind of expensive.

I do want to point out that you cannot have the same psychic power combination on your rune priests as it violates the Space Wolves Army List, Leaders of the Pack rule. Other than that the list seems pretty straight forward.

Good point Acherin, will have to swap one of the powers on them, Perhaps the one that makes it difficult/dangerous for flyers?
Grugknuckle, I'm totally on board with you on the Drop Pods, what a massive pain in the a$$! I've got 3 of them assembled and have started on my 4th, and it's time consuming and frustrating. Once my next shipment comes in I think I'll try to assembly line them as follows
1) Assemble Doors
2) Assemble center posts and harness
3) Assemble Base
4) Assemble Engine
5) Glue engine to one fin w/ spacers on both sides and allow it to set overnight
6) Glue that fin to base with spacer on central post for support. Let set overnight.
7) Glue other 4 fins, allow it to sit overnight
8) glue rest of fins and spacers. For this step I'm using a couple of rubber bands wrapped around the pod to keep them tight and placed properly. Then I put the glue on, add the spacers, and make sure the spacers don't move by pining it with a rhino door (put one end on rubber bands, other end flat on spacer, it works wonders). Allow glue to set overnight.
9) Finish the rest of it, shave doors where needed to open and close properly.
I'm finding that If I go slow and steady and spend the extra time allowing the glue to dry it works out pretty well, though I'm not exactly looking forward to the next 6

Since you aren't rolling to hit with Jaws or Storm Caller, the Chooser isnt really necessary on either priest.
Incidentally, I thought that we had to have different psychic powers on our priests, so one of them needs to change abilities.

Yeah, gotta change the powers
The Chooser's of the slain are there to prevent infiltration behind your LF. If you space them properly they will allow you to make sure that any enemy infiltrators will have to suffer a round of focused fire before assaulting them I've found that to be worth the 20 pts

Both RP cant have the same powers.
You wont have an issue with Flyers, trust me. In fact with 50 Alpha Striking marines you should be able to table the pure flyer lists.

I also think you are putting too many eggs in one basket. What do you do vs Warp Quake spam? GK are popular enough to think about it

I wouldnt invest in more than 5 pods and I would advocate building a better ground force. 30 podding space wolves is plenty to put pressure on

Changed up Powers on Rune Priests, Swapped one for Tempest to keep flyers and skimmers at bay.
I think I'l be ok vs GK simply by virtue of volume of fire. With soooo many shots, and alot of plasma going their way they will have to make alot of saves. Even in terminator armor, if you make them roll enough dice they will eventually roll 1's
The main reason I like the 9 Pods is really just a preference thing. Drop Pods = Longships, these are Space Vikings after-all. They storm the beaches with axes swinging and charge into the fray, come what may. It seems fitting and fun, and I just get immense satisfaction out of it

Then go for it. I think the list is solid. That many bodies is a very, very good thing to have in 6th. Don't fear Flyers, they fear you. Automatically Appended Next Post: maybe drop 2 Fangs and give those Rune Priests Runic Armor. I think that is a very nice thing to have on an IC

I hate to be the bearer of bad news again but tempest wrath does not effect flyers. It was just updated in the FAQ
Q: Does the Tempest’s Wrath psychic power affect Flyers? (p37)
A: No.
However I still use it from time to time especially using a drop pod list. It can really disrupt heavy jump infantry and jetbike spam armies

This is also BS! GW is doing everything they can to get people to buy buy buy... I already had 3 Stormravens for my BA army because I really liked the model and I ran them in 5th anyway. Tempest Wrath was SW way to deal with flyers.. and they stole it! GRrr! Damn you Marketing scemes!

I've looked through the thread, but can't seem to see what point cost this list is?
I like it, but wether or not its a really good list depends on what the point cost actually is, at a guess i'd say 1850?

I pointed it out to see myself and it is 1850. I dont like the standards. I dont really know why but I just dont see them being useful. That may be a "lazy" thing or lack of knowledge on when to use it. Could also be the fear of using it at the wrong time. dont know but its saves a few points to get some gear to the rune priests... artificer armor, wolf tooth necklace... something. Just a thought.

As long as your RP's have at least one different power each, you're all set. Since one of your RP's has JotWW and Tempest's Wrath and the other RP has JotWW and Storm Caller, they have a different combination of powers and therefore satisfy the leaders of the pack rule. So what I'm saying is that it's fine for two rune priests to have the same psychic power as long as their other powers are different. Grugknuckle, I'm totally on board with you on the Drop Pods, what a massive pain in the a$$! I've got 3 of them assembled and have started on my 4th, and it's time consuming and frustrating. If you want to have a good paint job, you really need to paint it before you assemble it completely. Especially the inside. You really should paint the harnesses and base before you put the doors and posts on. And it's a lot easier to airbrush (or spray paint) the doors before they're assembled. vyndetta85 wrote:I pointed it out to see myself and it is 1850. I dont like the standards. Could also be the fear of using it at the wrong time. dont know but its saves a few points to get some gear to the rune priests... artificer armor, wolf tooth necklace... something. Just a thought. When to use the Wolf Standard : The shooting phase right before you charge for the very first time. Or the shooting phase right before you know you're going to be charged. The wolf standard is one of the best pieces of wargear in the game. It allows you to re-roll ALL dice rolls of '1' for that assault phase. So you get to re-roll dice rolls of '1' to Hit in overwatch, to Wound in overwatch, leadership for counterattacking, to see how many attacks your MotW gets, to Hit with CC weapons, to Wound in CC, armor saves, psychic tests (for force weapons) and FNP (if you have it). This single piece of wargear can turn a unit of 10 grey hunters into the CC equivalent of about 15 vanilla assault marines. And it only costs 10 points! Take it. When to use the Wolf Tooth Necklace : Never. Never ever take a wolf tooth necklace because any character who is actually allowed to take one already has a weapon skill of at least 5. He's already hitting all troop models on a 3+, so the 10 points you spend only get's you anything if you happen to attack a model with the same WS or better. When to take Runic Armor : Whenever you expect your character to be in close combat or drawing a lot of fire. It is not necessary for example if you're going to park your rune priest back with the long fangs and out of LOS just to provide divination re-rolls. Runic armor is great for characters who expect to fight challenges, but need to fit into a Rhino. But if transport space is not an issue, then you want terminator armor instead because for the same point cost terminator armor comes with a storm bolter, power weapon and a 5+ invulnerable.

Acherin: Crap! That will teach me for not being up to date on my FAQs. Ah well, the Tempest should still be useful but will have to play around with some of the other powers. Any suggestions?
Vyndetta85: The list is all yours bud, Drop Pod away Will have to look at upgrades for the RP, I just like cheap and effective as a basic preference.
Rodgers37: I believe the list comes in at 2K with all the upgrades, but don't have my Army Builder files on this comp. It was build with the 5th ed version, and havn't had time to check it vs the new 6th ed rule book.
Ghastli: yep, totally aping guard mentality on this one Throw bodies and bullets at the enemy until they drown in em. Gotta love high volumes of fire, good to know I've got a guard player quaking in this respect, cause that means I'm doing it right
Grugknuckle: Very good points, but I think I'm going to pony up and pay bluetable or its equivalent to paint the pods, I simply don't have time these days. Its all I can do to carve out enough time to assemble the models and get them to the table (model assembly is my late night stress reliever from grad school).
Thanks to all for the comments, Keep em coming

I don't know what year of grad school you're in or in what subject, but I speak from experience when i say this : Finish school first, then play WH40K. I can't see how any grad student could realistically afford to pay BlueTable anyway.

Oh, I'm an older returning student, did 10 years in military / police before coming back for batchelors / gradschool. I just play the game to get a breather from all the science reading / benchwork. I've also got the benefit of being married and own my home I can't imagine affording the game if I were in my 20's. Oh, and if interested my field is Microbiology, 2nd year
