1. What colours are the crimson slaughter paint wise.

2. Can I play DV right out of the box, no codex needed?

3. Is their any thing else I should get when I start, Mind you I'm brand new to 40k

1. No idea. GW will likely post a paint list or tutorial on their website or in an upcoming White Dwarf article.

2. Dark Vengeance has some simplified rules and scenarios included in the booklet, but do not have the point costs and other rules you'd need to use the cultists in a standard game of 40k. The cultists are not in the current Chaos Book either. The current rumor is that the new Chaos book is due out very soon and will have cultists. Also, there are no point costs for the Hellbrute, but you could use the Chaos Dreadnought for him in the mean time.

Long story short, you need the codex to play standard games, but I would wait. There will be a new codex very soon, most likely.

3. I would start there, and get some primer and paints and then go to town painting. Before you have them painted up, the new codex will drop, I bet. Then I would get the new Chaos codex.

Edit: Also, on point 1, just because they are painted as the Crimson Slaughter on the box and on their website, that doesn't mean you have to paint yours that way or call them the Crimson Slaughter. You could paint them green and call them the Screaming Green Meanies if you wanted to. I haven't decided what to paint mine as I'm waiting on the new codex to pick a faction.

I would do some reading of the different Chaos Space Marine factions if I were you. Pick something you think would be fun to paint and play.

I'm not wholly new, I've read the IW and WB omnibus and play space marine, I'm also a lore guru (kind of). Other than that thanks very much. I love chaos but I think the crimson slaughter have amazing lore, characters and are just plainly amazing.

Have you read the new book for the Crimson Slaughter? Is it any good. I've read a fair amount of Black Library books, and find them to be hit or miss, depending on the subject.

That's okay. Do you mean dark vengeance the novel, I've read snippets but not the whole thing. I'll prob get it when I get the starter set.

Actually, DV is the first I've ever heard of Crimson Slaughter!

Yeah I think they were actually created for the occasion but I think they have alot of potential as a chaos chapter. I really hope that they continue with them as a chapter. The basics are that their ex-loyalist renegades who follow khorne, when they were punished by the imperium for crimes they didn't commit they took their punishment and went to the eye of terror as a last stand style thing. Unfortunatly they got possesed by khorne I guy got turned into a helpmates and they pissed off dark angels 5th company! I could go into more detail but I'm kind of tired now so sorry!

There is not a lot of lore.

They were a loyalist chapter under the name of Crimson Sabres. The details on how they fell would already be a medium spoiler of the book (it's a rather short book really).

The thing I do like about them is how they illustrate with the Crimson Slaughter how easily Marines and Marine Chapters can fall to Chaos if they are not careful. There is literally a line in the book by the DA Librarian that says something like this:

" … thank the Lion that it was not the Dark Angels who had heeded the call that day [...], that it was not our proud brotherhood that was laid low by so base a trick of the arch-enemy."

Makes corruption by Chaos once again a much more immediate, ever-present threat IMO.
