Greetings all, I am just doing some reading of Horus Rising (never read these before) and I only a few chapters in. In the very 1st chapter some planet, claiming to be "Terra", is being invaded by our beloved Space Marines. On this planet there just so happens to be some highly powerful character that is claiming himself to be THE EMEROR and he is basically just like the real Emperor but not. Anyways who the hell was that guy, and why did he have powers and gak? But was not a primarch or a SM but instead some false deity. That just kinda confused me. I mean I get the idea of making claim to gain power over a old legend, gak like that truly happens. But idk, thought I would spark a convo over this stuff and see what happens, maybe there was others out there had this same question or at least maybe knew of a possible theory.

No, he was just the leader of that world. They intentionally mislead you so they could open the series with 'I was there when Horus killed the Emperor'. It wasn't the Emperor, just a nice way to catch your attention and do a bit of foreshadowing for people who don't know the story.

This.

He was just a leader of a world that the Luna Wolves were bringing to compliance/the Imperium, but otherwise there's nothing really special about him himself, but he is used to create an amazing opening [line] IMHO.

"As I recall, your face was tortured. Imagine that - the Master of the Wolves, his ferocity twisted into grief. And yet you still carried out your duty. You always did what was asked of you. So loyal. So tenacious. Truly you were the attack dog of the Emperor. You took no pleasure in what you did. I knew that then, and I know it now. But all things change, my brother. I'm not the same as I was, and you're... well, let us not mention where you are now."
