Hi dakka,
I've spent the best part of the day playing Dawn of War (the very first one, lol) and i was wondering, if i were to make a blood ravens army, which marine codex would i use.
At first thought, i would have gone with C: SM, and said it was a 'custom' chapter, and avoided special characters.
But they have 'blood' in their name and are red, so maybe Blood Angels? Kind of a weak reason to go with their codex, but it makes sense(?) - kinda
So, which codex would you go with?

I would personally go with C: SM. I don't think any of the other chapters really fit the Blood Ravens well.
Oh, and don't forget to include the "gifts" from the other chapters

The units you use in the game follow the standar marine codex. Use that one.

I would use Blood Angels; the red thirst/black rage would incorporate the chaosy side of the Blood Ravens.

Use Codex: Space Marines for Blood Ravens. The Blood Ravens essentially follow the Codex Astares apart from some minor deviations, most notably an increased number and use of Librarians amongst the chapter, and a tendency towards methodical, carefully calculated strikes, which contrasts many other chapters tactics of either rushing to get stuck in with a berserk fury, or launching rapid strikes at any momentarily visible weak point. This attitude contrasts with the Blood Angels, who fight in a much more bloodthirsty manner. The only commonality the Blood Ravens and Angels have is that their armour is a shade of red and they have the word blood in their chapter name.

The fact that this question was asked surprises me.
The entire point of making the Blood Ravens the stars of DoW is so they can use a codex chapter without stepping on "well that chapter wouldnt do that" like if they picked the UMs
Seriously I cant even think of a single good reason why the Blood Ravens would fit in ANY of the other codexs.

They're a codex chapter that happens to have a few more Librarians than other chapters. Just use Codex: Space Marines and either do a counts-as Tigurius or run two Librarians in a list. If you really want to hammer the Librarian thing home, ally in Blood Angels or Dark Angels for a Librarian with different powers.

chaos. (now stick with me since i can justify that)
they are the loyalists from the thousand suns. During the horus heresy magnus the red sent a ship full of space marines off planet right before prospero burned. this ship bears (bore dont know this story like the back of my hand) the same name as the flag ship/ home ship of the blood ravens a chapter whose origins are steeped in mystery and have no record of their homeworld just like how all chaos marines homeworlds where destroyed. and their first chapter master was the space marine captain who was sent away with the ship. both chapters have a heavy focus on psykers. this may not add up in some of the eyes of the readers but i hope it does in some like it did in mine. now back to the original topic since the thousand sons are their parent chapter you should use the chaos codex with the thousand sons rules(note i am not totally familiar with thousand sons and am unsure of some rules so it may make no sense at all in which case use space marines.)

Haha, just a reason to use the nice new chaos codex

Yes, while their backstory heavily hints at the chapter being descended from the Thousand Sons Legion, (who were never actual traitors - only forced to join due to the Warmaster's meddling in the whole thing), it wouldn't make sense to actually use the CSM's codex.
The Blood Ravens only real divergence is their increased numbers of Librarians, seemingly stronger/darker psychic abilities and their secretive nature & on-going quest to discover (or hide?!) their true origens.
Codex: Space Marines is always appropriate since the BR's are a codex chapter, but if you want to play up the Libby side of things and their better psychic abilities, then you could use the Dark Angels rules and simply use the Deathwing/Ravenwing options as their proper 'codex' counterparts. (ie: don't mix tactical & assault options in your termie squads!) The DA's tend to get far cooler, and much darker psychic abilties, while the secretive nature is shared by both chapters, albeit for very different reasons!

I agree with Experiment 626 on this. Run the Blood Ravens as a regular codex space marines army but use Dark Angels codex or some such to give a Librarian some different psychic powers options if you so desire. 6th edition makes doing this sort of thing a breeze.

inb4 ragestorm but I would do Space Wolves.
Now, you would have to lay off the cheese (no Long Fang spam), but you could have several heroes (DoW style), could tool up HQs or Elites with several exotic wargear "gifts" from other chapters.
Rune priest are just awesome core unit for SW and they would fit in perfectly with Blood Raven lore, hell Njal even has a RAVEN on his shoulder.
If you don't mind the nerfbat hits that Dreads got hit in 6th edition, you could even use Bjorn as Davian Thule for extra badassery.
Chapter Master Gabriel Angelos seems like the kind of guy who leads from the front, so he could be a Wolf Lord or maybe even count as Arjac
